    Oh dear...

Surely that was a job for the local Somchai and Somsak???

Had a bit of luck last night, walking back from the baseball with a mate, we decided to pop into a local bar - was full of foreigners, very strange, then noticed my friend Kim smiling at me and saying she thought I'd forgotten... She'd been telling me for weeks about her birthday drink, nearly forgot... Here's the moany bit, bought her a drink, sat down, had 2 quick Sommersby's after my 45 minute walk (good exercise walking to the baseball and back), started to enjoy meself then the phone goes with the wife screaming about me coming home late...

It's not only trees, Somchai and Somsak are amazing in all areas of handyman "repair".

I once had some Burmese Somchais and Somsaks around to cut the grass of the large garden in a nice house we rented in a village by Bangmod. The wife was out, just cut the grass in the garden, please. Got busy doing something (my mistake), went out to check after a couple of minutes and they'd started by mowing down the wife's herb garden (she'd spent a couple of years building it up from hometown clippings, seeds, roadside gatherings, etc).

Just mentioned it to her, it was 10 or 11 years ago, and she just scowled at me.

At the time, I expected a nuclear reaction, but I think she was too angry to react much, more shaking and crazy eyes then shutting herself in a room. She loves her herbs and stuff; here in Korea she has a roof garden she has created (bought nothing...) from discarded plant pots and trays, and clipping stuff she sees or has had sent over from Thailand. She also sends stuff back to Thailand, to her dad, such Korean mint - apparently the roots are much more extensive than on Thai mint which allows the plants to grow larger and be sturdier...

Supervision is the word, it won't matter how clear you make instructions they'll get overriden by the "Thai knows best" rider, i've given up and do all but the simplist stuff myself.

    Yes, you're right.

But, Thais cannot be supervised because they know better and the minute you turn your back they'll do it their way...

After careful thought and some discussion, I have changed my position: don't let Somchai nor Somsak near your Mango trees, but do take more care of your nuts next time...

Another little story: first time I went to the wife's land, where we eventually built our mansion, it was really hot surveying the land, so while the Thais stood out in the direct sun, I took shade under a tree. They gave me that kinda Thai look where they know something, but aren't gonna tell you. Anyways, after a few painful minutes I also decided to stand out in the direct sunlight. Yes, it was a mango tree, and yes, the wife and her dad did find it funny...

^ I think I have missed something here. Mango trees are cool and shady underneath. Why was it unpleasant for you there ???

    Bastards !

I didn't know the little fvckers wouldn't even let you stand under the bloody tree !

I've never had a problem with a mango tree here in Oz, and I used to spend half my life up one till age 6.

Having said fucknutsana is stupid, getting up a red ant infested tree with no undercrackers and loosish work trousers wasn't too smart - queue Manny
..... Next year for phase 2 i'm employing scorched earth policy on any nests before alighting any tree and deploying the tightest pair of speedos any Aussie would be proud of. At least i learn.

...or even the more complicated task.
When in doubt, do it yourself -

For the big big projects, a very close supervised role is appropriate.

    NPT
A friend of mine uses some sort of chemical spray on his mango and other trees and he has no ants at all. I will go and see him and see if I can get a picture of the chemical he uses.
I need to get some for myself, I hate the fuckers and smash their nests everytime I see one, mind you I use a long stick.

Ootai, i'm ok honstly - we don't use sprays, in fact i stopped buying a lot of veg in markets bacause i can see the chemical blitz they put on all the tender greens, you can see the life expectancy drop on the agri workers round us and people eat that shit. The ant are a pain if you dusturb them but thb, its offset by being sat there at times watching their industry and nature finds its balance or so i believe.

My wife won't let me destroy their nests, she uses the eggs in some steamed egg concoction she makes. No problem, I wait until she goes out.

I am sick of getting bitten by red ants but find that cutting down the nests controls them well enough. I chuck the nests in the pond and the fish love it.

My Missus reckons ants eggs are better than lamb, and she loves lamb. Your Missus would go spare if she knew

    ^ I know. That's why I bribe the gardener.

She would go a lot more spare if she knew how much the soi dogs are costing me!

First time she made me the steamed egg with ants eggs dish I spent ages picking out the eggs and ant pupae until she told me they were part of the recipe.

My partners niece, about 5 months pregnant, is visiting for 3 weeks, arriving soon.

She's Thai, but living in the West.

Long story, but it was a choice of visiting us, a different country from where she resides in the West,
or going back to Thailand as an unmarried Mum ... and you know that is a difficult road to walk.
Father is a young Thai man in Thailand.

    Sooooo ...

a few things need tidying up around the house. I start to do some of the jobs.

Fix that light, shampoo the carpet (kids leave stains everywhere) and I get grief from SWMBO.

She pissed that she has asked/nagged me to do those odd jobs, but it took the relatives visit to get them done.

So, I asked, do you want me to stop?

    was the look.

Always in the ... only the depth that changes
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ...

Dave, women are normally quite astute so you'll probably find more visits programmed.
