Ok. So the story changes again. Now you are saying it is not the users that need to change, it is the software that the vendors update all the time?

    More generic bollocks.

Who is "us" and "we" and what is it that you need to change on a daily basis?

Sounding like a broken record here because you are afraid to go into specifics. Because, again, you don't know what you are talking about.

I don't divulge too much information about my work or workplace for various reasons, but I don't think I have to be specific do I? I have mostly intelligent, professional users, using a wide variety of applications, and they want access to their PCs, not some locked down appliance. They need to work on those applications, maybe bang them onto a laptop to take out into the field, and so on.

So when you say "It depends on who is running the IT and what the users need". It certainly does. So I'm guessing you don't run your IT department and your users are housewives or chimps.

Well not all of us are in that position. My users and I (that would be the "we" to which you refer) would laugh our socks off at some salesman trying to flog that shit, but he obviously impressed you, didn't he?

Out of interest, how many PCs DO you actually "support"?

Again, nothing specific. Another empty post. You answer questions with more questions.

What is it specifically that Deep Freeze or any other program that does the same, pick one, won't let your users do?

That's the fourth time I ask, and I am sure I will get another long response that says nothing.

    - I won't say what I do" that's what Daffy said.

"My users do many thing in various locations where they want access to their PCs to do various things"

That's your answer as the tech you say you are?. Can't even answer a simple question directly.

In a computer that is frozen, they can access whatever they want. You don't know that because you don't know how to administer or support a network and the users.

You are exactly the reason why people always complain that their IT departments suck and their computers never work.

Still waiting for an answer as to what is it your users can't do with their computers frozen.

I am sure I will get no answer or a vague empty one. I'm giving up waiting for an answer. Just admit you don't have an answer and let it be.

    Let's try this:

You have a population of 300 users -- 140 of which are high end graphic artists, who produce the life-blood of your company's main revenue streams. The other 160 are clerical users (copywriters, proofers, managers), and supporting users to the graphic artists.

The artists some standard tools (like CS5) while also using a variety of tools and applications that each prefer; this extends to various plugins and supporting applications for their graphic applications. Fonts are an important criteria of this ecosystem, as are a variety of printers in use in different locations.

Go for it - tell us how you'd handle this.

I'd use "Desktop Authority", to remotely deploy applications, updates, configurations etc to specific groups of users.

So is Deepfreeze like Microsoft Steadystate only you have to pay for it? I know my company uses antivirus on all laptops and I'm talking tens of thousands.

We use 'Casper' suite for the same, across the desktops I support.

It is kinda amusing, considering it's obvious that quite a few of us here work in IT, and have a long history of diverse experiences -- and here's some guy who's all theory, and who's total experience extends to managing 10 computers for a library, lecturing us about his 'experience.

It does take me back down memory lane, though.

That, and executives for whom checking email is a mental challenge, who think it's a great idea. In the world of self-perpetuating stupidity, IT mid and senior management nearly always rules supreme.

work and save anything without (fast) internet/network access - unless you are now advocating USB flash storage and the myriad of security issues that raises ?

You can save to a partition. Eventually, it needs to be taken out of there and backed up anyway.

Everytime someone silences you , you have the same response:

OH yes yes, sure.. .I've heard of that too.

I will call microsoft and let them know the geniuses at Teak Door say the way to administer a network is to give users 100% control over the computers.

They'll add it to the new version of the MCSE server book.

Never have. What do you do? Other than live on Teak Door? Last response from you was "I don't want to share that".

and that's not security, again you are not addressing the issue of a virus wiping out a partition or corrupting work, above all when that work is fresh. Your solution doesn't take care of that and again it is not flexible to be realistic in a dynamic and active corporate environment.

You think like a typical tech drone living in his basement and masturbating on new software technology.

Are you related to Quack Quack by any chance ? he also masturbate a lot on high tech toys,

it would seem so, of course every corporate desktop have AV software, nobody is naive and stupid enough to believe that DeepFreeze or the like will solve all these problems effectively.

I already did. I told you "When was the last time you had a virus that "wiped your partition" and that a partition can be undeleted.

Again, you are just trolling. Just like Dug ignoring posts and keeping on his troll.

Chups I'm no IT wiz but it sounds like your solution is for staff that are undisciplined and unprofessional. It shouldn't be needed for serious companies doing serious work.

IT grunts are like mechanics; always making things sound overcomplicated with technical terms and such, in order to disguise the fact that what they do is actually pretty fukn basic. That's why you can get crash course IT 'diplomas' from a wheet-bix box. Anyone with inferior knowledge of IT, regardless of other acheivments, is labled stupid, and get, like, pwned, lolza, ftw

Hmmm.... Seems like Cupacabra has overlooked a request to analyze a pretty simple scenario. Probably just an oversight.

    So, chupie, what is it:

    You asked:

    I posited:

You have a population of 300 users -- 140 of which are high end graphic artists, who produce the life-blood of your company's main revenue streams. The other 160 are clerical users (copywriters, proofers, managers), and supporting users to the graphic artists.

Go for it - tell us how you'd handle this. You know, a real IT situation, of real conditions. Not some library computers in a school.

I'm waiting - and so are the rest on this thread.

.... quite correct - not to you, and not in this thread.

Plenty of others know what I do, and the rest of us (well, except for your girlfriend mc2, maybe) on here pretty much understands that you avoid answering the same question, because you have no leg to stand on - hence, 0wned -- otherwise, you could 0wn me if you just demonstrated your extensive background and experience. But you can't. Bzzzzzt.... 0wned!
