"...and you have the rain-filled ones linked together to give you access to 4000 litres?"
No we have one at the side of the house and one at an end. That way we can catch water from 2 different downpipes
"That also makes perfect sense - you do not want to be sucking the last few milliliters containing the tank sediment. but...you had to 'modify it? Does that mean that although it shows those 2x 1/2 inch openings, only the upper one is ready to use?"
No they are both ready to use but the top one is an inlet and if you connect water to it the water flows out at the top of the tank. The tanks came supplied with a float valve which you can fit to the top of this inlet if you want to pump water into the tank. The 2 inch opening is also able to be used as an outlet.
"Did you retro-fit a filter to that line? If it IS calcium, then it should dissolve off with vinegar. Did you try that? also we hear many times about the 'cleaning' properties of coca-cola and the fact, they say that it 'rots teeth'. Teeth = calcium... may be worth a try if you did not do so already"
We have not fitted any filter/s as yet. The Missus is talking about getting some and then replacing the shower screens with new ones. As for cleaning I have tried vinegar, coke, Bam and everything I could find in stores here. I also brought back some CLR from Australia and tried that but no luck and the CLR stands for Calcium Limescale Rust and it didn't work either.
So after thinking about it if I had a chance to do anything differently it would be to make a fitting to go through the 2 inch opening but took water higher up in the tank ( like a snorkel) and use that as the outlet rather than ruining the tank by punching a hole in the inlet pipe. I suppose though if I wanted to pump water into the tank I could just fit a pipe on the outside
of the tank, wouldn't look as nice though.
