Thanks, LT...
But...isn't that the great thing with this forum?
... plenty of knowledgeable members who took the time to help me. So many have 'chipped in' with good advice and opinion, helping me to go the right way, or at least consider the options.
Some have come and gone along the way...inevitable with an epic thread (lol) but the advice was no less worthy.
Without members input, I am sure I would have made a few mistakes eg. convincing me to raise the land was one obvious one, but there have been many such inputs over the time
and its not finished yet!!
I am hoping in turn that those coming behind me will read this thread and have a 'head start' with their own projects...
It's American white ash wood the best for floors (it's not a softwood), I (we) did it my(our)selves some 8 years ago, still alive.
Anyway, there is always a good precaution against termites to apply (on the unseen sides towards to concrete construction) a special protection, in Thailand available Chaindrite in different colors and grades.
Most of the kitchen cabinets (also in Thailand) are by plywood (if not by chipboard panels) on a hardwood frame (sometime also a softwood). Or a fully solid wood construction can always be realized.![]()
Thanks for that info, Klondyke...
I have built plywood cabinet carcasses before but in UK. was not sure how they would stand up to the termite invasion. this was the whole carcass out of plywood and then the fronts, drawer fronts and cupboard doors all hardwood.
So..about the termite protection...are you talking about Chain 1 wood preservative comes in the tin in a range of colours, and colourless too. guess you paint it on?
'scuse my ignorance... you paint this stuff on, then it lasts for..how long?
haha I don't want to be re-applying it every 2 weeks or something...!
Thanks for your help...
Just begun. Bit like a netflix series. Probably run several seasons. Just starting season 2. LD's erection. Many more to follow.
Termites can be a problem but with the protection you have installed already, selection of wood and application of Chaindrite as Klongdyke suggested, no reason you will have problems with kitchen cabinets.
Knock on wood (pun intended) with annual use of Chaindrite powder around foundation, so far zero termite problems here.
Re screws in your flooring, although different than the way mine were done, they will be fine. Your builder didn't fall off the melon wagon yesterday.
Keep the thread going and thanks for time and effort so far.

Lol, probably less of Netflix Norton, and more like 'War and Peace' with the 'Lord of the Rings' thrown in as an addendum!
mind you...if i get an offer from Netflix to dramatise this one, i will be all over it
I see Brad Pitt covering my role (obviously, cos we are like twins), and PJ can be played by.....
Ahh..but who? She's pretty unique![]()
TD, I do not know about "Chain 1", but perhaps there are also other brand names of wood preservatives. The Chaindrite is known in Thailand shops, ask your people what's their knowledge.
As I wrote it is compulsory for the built-in wooden parts connected to concrete structures. How long it will last? You have to ask "Dolemon", but I doubt that he will know the answer, pephaps somebody in heaven...![]()
Plywood is a favorite delicacy fo them.
Usually, loosen furniture do not need this, just a painting that the termites also rather avoid. Normally, they do not frequent within a free space, always secretly from behind.
Of course, when a total prevention around the house is organized and regularly maintained the danger should be minimized.

These and other packaging available at hardware shop around the corner, your builder will surely know...

yes - that's the same site.
Lol.. he will surely know Klondyke, but I am disconnecting him from the kitchen process as he (by his own admission) is not as strong with wood working as his other building skills.
Fair play for him to speak up.
He wants to build the Thai classic concrete carcass kitchen.
I'm pushing for info for the kitchen because it will be the one thing I WANT to be completed asap.
I wonder if it could be build ti in 2 weeks? lol
Oops. Sorry. I get you and BLD often confused. It's an age thing.
No way would I suggest actor to play role of Joy. She might take offense and put a Thai hex on me.
Excuse me for saying this but they should have put the screws at an angle just above the tongue so that when the next board is slotted on "no" fixings visible ?
I'm sorry, I realise now I was only on #2125 when I posted my reply which had already covered the subject thoroughly .
The last floor I did was about 2 years ago and was solid oak, the whole house.
Oops a neighbour has just popped in with a bottle and a DVD, come to cheer me up, mother passed away !

Hey DM, you OK? I know what you are going though..was there myself in June, as you know.
My heartfelt condolences... its never easy but you will get through it. just be strong now for the family, and concentrate on her whole life and the good times, not just the end bit.
When we had my Mum's after-burial party (yes really) she stated the party would be a celebration of life and complete with champagne! My brother and i were happy to follow those last instructions and a very pleasant day was had reminiscing with all present.
Again, sorry to hear, be strong and look forward now to a new start in 2019, with your duty completed.

I am sure you were discussing tanks over on BiP's thread so I thought I would give you my tuppence worth.
I will post it here as I know BiP reads this thread and he has already purchased his tank.
Besides his thread has not yet made it to the lofty heights of the "Famous Threads" yet.
This is the type of tank we bought back in 2010, we have 3 of them and they are as good as new except where I "doctored" one
This is how they come with 2 half inch openings and 1 two inch opening. The top half inch opening is the "inlet" and inside it has a pipe which goes up to the top of the tank and it comes with a float valve to turn of the water flow once its full.
Below you can see I have "doctored" this tank by making the top half inch opening the outlet. The reason for this was too allow a space at the bottom of the tank for settlement of any sediment or bird crap. The water coming in is from our roof. The 2 inch opening is used for draining the tank and I used a length of half inch PVC pipe to wash out around the bottom of the tank but very little is left after draining the tank.
The way I changed it was to use a piece of red hot steel to melt a hole into the PVC pipe going up from the top outlet. I should add that we drink the rain water from both these tanks without using any filters.
The third of our tanks is filled from our bore and that water is used for our showers and kitchen again not filtered however, while I have drank the water and it is fine, we do not drink the bore water. Unfortunately we should have installed a filter for this as the water has left a deposit on our showers screens that is virtually impossible to get off. The only way I have found to get it off is to use a sharp (razor) blade type scraper and then scrape it off, which is bloody hard work, so the screens are now opaque. The fine white powder that I scrape off I think is calcium but we have never had the water analysed.Doesn't bother me but the Missus doesn't like it, the opaque screens not the scraping that is.
I should also mention that these tanks come in other colours.

...and you have the rain-filled ones linked together to give you access to 4000 litres?
That's useful to know - thanks
That also makes perfect sense - you do not want to be sucking the last few milliliters containing the tank sediment. but...you had to 'modify it? Does that mean that although it shows those 2x 1/2 inch openings, only the upper one is ready to use?
Did you retro-fit a filter to that line? If it IS calcium, then it should dissolve off with vinegar. Did you try that? also we hear many times about the 'cleaning' properties of coca-cola and the fact, they say that it 'rots teeth'. Teeth = calcium... may be worth a try if you did not do so already
Again, good information
Thanks for that very informative post, ootai

I sometimes can't help myself making comments like that.
I am an Aussie so we don't always use the Queen's English either but we are proud of adaptions and readily say we speak Australian where as Americans usually say they speak "English".
In the end words i.e. the spoken language is only good for conveying a message and if it does that then it is correct no matter how it is spell.
