Four US Hostages killed by Somali Pirates

    Tuesday 22 February 2011

US Naval forces fail in bid to rescue sailors taken hostage by pirates. Lieutenant Colonel Lawhorn told Channel 4 News: 'We heard small arms fire on the boat and decided to do an emergency assault'

The four sailors were round the world travellers Phyllis Macay and Bob Riggle from Seattle and their friends - and the boat's owners - Jean and Scott Adam from California.

Their boat, the Quest, was attacked by pirates on Friday and was being monitored by US forces. Four navy warships were involved, including an aircraft carrier.

    More here..

there are naval vessels all over that stretch of water and they still can't stop these clowns from taking hostages as soon as they see a boat that is full of africans they know they are up to no good blow it out of the water.

    'penalty of death by hanging'

^ agree, they have no other reason to be out there.

and these trials cost money. . . string 'em up

Somali Pirates Face Death Penalty In Malaysia

    11 Feb 2011
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysian prosecutors filed charges carrying the death penalty Friday against seven suspected Somali pirates accused of attacking a Malaysian-operated ship in the Gulf of Aden, in the first such charges in Asia against the African sea bandits.

The Somalis – some as young as 15 years old – are suspected of taking 23 Filipino crew members captive aboard a chemical tanker on Jan. 20. Malaysian naval commandos responsible for protecting the vessel stormed it less than two hours later and freed the crew. The pirates shot at the commandos, but no injuries were reported.

The Somalis were brought to Malaysia, where government lawyers on Friday charged them with using firearms against Malaysian armed forces personnel with the intention of causing death or hurt.

The charge carries a penalty of death by hanging, but prosecutors said that if convicted, three of the Somalis are expected to have their sentences commuted to prison terms because they are minors.

    .....

Many suspected pirates detained by navies are released after being disarmed because some nations are reluctant to bear the cost of putting them on trial and imprisoning them, while others fear that suspects might seek to claim asylum.

Maybe the story should read; arrogant military clowns bungled rescue attempt. Instead of waiting for a ransom demand, some America Navy idiot decided to play Rambo with predictable results.

Maybe the Navy might consider discipline, like any decent police department would in a similar situation?

    From the same article:

"The military said that two pirates died in the confrontation and 13 more were captured and detained."

Didn't the Russians deal with it somewhat better a few months ago... Unless the Americans are gonna toruture them and find out their villages for napalm attacks... which is all but justifyable if these somalis are intent on random killings of global citizens, imho.

This all seems very reasonable, though for pirates I still like the Russian tactics...

Just read an article in Google News that said these four Americans were cruising around the world to "spread the word" and pass out bibles in every country they visited. So, they were not only stupid to be sailing into what they knew was harm's way, but were doing so to convert the world. Just saying........guess god must not have been paying attention....

OK I may have embellished the US forces, but on the other hand, maybe not.

They should have gone ahead with the carrier version of the stealth bomber and they could have sneaked up without them knowing.

Somali pirates kill four US hostages | World news | guardian.co.uk

"Somali pirates in touch with news agencies claimed the four hostages were killed in retaliation after a pre-emptive strike by the US navy. "This is absolute nonsense. It is false," said Lieutenant-Commander Bill Speaks, a spokesman for US Central Command, based in Tampa, Florida.

"We were in the process of talking with the pirates when we heard small arms fire and a rocket-propelled grenade was fired at the USS Sterett, a guided missile destroyer," Speaks said. "It was only after that our special forces operations team went into action. The hostages were killed prior to any action by US forces.""

How much damage to this ship does a grenade make?

    Oh where was Al Jazeera!!

Whilst i agree there is nothing more annoying than those 'on a mission with a bible' at times. I understand they were sailing off the coast of Oman when these Somali pirates took them. Its hard to belive that the worlds navies cannot stop this. The problem now is that collectivly these pirates are now holding some 300 hostages from all over the world, its a death sentance for them if Somalia is blockaded with lethal force.

^Yep. It's a country in name only, and there is no central government, military or police to deal with. The hostages, most of whom are poor third world merchant sailors, are indeed in a world of hurt. The problem escalated to this level because of a total lack of response from Western powers for a very long time, leading the pirates to believe they could operate with impunity, and that they had found a major cash cow - which they had. I feel only sadness for the poor merchant marines who are in this situation. That said, I have little sympathy for wealthy westerners who sail in areas known to be dangerous, and then expect their governments to bail them out. I have even less sympathies for missionaries - of any religion. I fully expect that the next step will be their church or relatives filing suit against the USG for getting them killed.

^Well, I owe the family an apology. Rather than filing suit against the USG, the daughter has issued a press statement thanking all of the military personnel who put their lives at risk attempting to rescue her parents. In this case, it's nice to be wrong.

Absolute fuk wits and asked for it one could surmise.

I was wondering why such a shitty little boat would be in these waters and there's your answer, further more they expect the yanks to risk there lives rescuing them.

Dumb foks and not much sympathy from me if this is the true information.

They should torture them harder to make sure - then, as long as the villages have a few new cars (clear signs of pirate illgotten gains...) napalm them...

Death is too good for these pirates- look what this asshole had the sack to say about losing his 'investment':

Pirate leader Farah, speaking from Bayla, a pirate haven in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland in northern Somalia, vowed to avenge the deaths and capture of his comrades.

"I lost the money I invested and my comrades. No forgiveness for the Americans. Revenge. Our business will go on," he said, adding he had spent $110,000 so far in the hijacking, including on weapons and food and salaries.

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Still, considering the high piracy rate in and around that area I would consider it an unacceptable risk to go any where near it.

That's just me but I tend to use a bit of common sense.

Is the other side any better? Obama hoped for a big political coup by staging a "daring" rescue, instead he got 4 dead Americans. The American Government and their Navy are nearly as much to blame for these deaths as the pirates. The captives were likely being kept alive for a ransom payment, which should have been a private matter between their family and the pirates, and they are dead because of politics. Had the ransom been paid, they probably would have been released to induce the families of future captives to also pay ransom. I sure their family is grateful for the assistance of their moronic manic government.
