    Why?
You reckon she still has influence or folks are too stupid to recognize her accomplishments?

She did what was necessary to drag the UK out of the mire. Unfortunately that meant hurting many people who bore no blame for the state we were in and who had no means of escaping the consequences.

The miners were typical of the reasons we were in the shit, the unions dominated the Labour party, they were paid for too much for what was essentially unskilled work and all of the pits were kept open without any thought to profit. It was cheaper for the government to pay dole money than it was to keep many pits open.

The same could be said for the British motor industry.

Thatcher broke the unions and made the country work. 10 years of Bliar have only rolled it back slightly. Mainly because Bliar was afraid to make any decisions in case The Daily Mail stopped loving him

It was fortunate too that North Sea oil rig jobs opened up about that time absorbing quite a few displaced workers.

Queen Betty is not going to like this news of a State funeral.
    She absolutely loathed Margaret Thatcher.

So the ends justified the means did they? I think not.

So, has the economy of the UK recovered or what?
Have those displaced miners found new jobs or what?

    I disagree.
There was no other choice but to elect the Tories with Thatcher in charge.
The Unions ran Britain, not the elected government.
The Unions had already brought down the Tories with Edward Heath in charge.
The Labour party with Harold Wilson and James Callaghan in charge was just a glove puppet for the Unions. The Unions supplied Labour with cash and votes. "He who pays the piper, calls the tune", and that was exactly what the Unions did.

The best thing Thatcher did was make illegal Union voting by a show of hands and flying pickets. She made secret ballots, law.
This took away the fear of the moderate, non-militant union members who just wanted to work to support their families, by stopping the intimidation by the die-hard unionists who could quite plainly see who was voting against them at union meetings.
The moderate workers and their families were threatened by these bullies which is why the unions were so powerful.
After secret ballots came in, the unions lost their power and common sense reigned.

I wouldn't imagin Phosporus to be used in hand grenades due to the inability to control it's dispersal. More likely to be used in artillery shells.

I know someone who was there. I think the 'grenades' were supposed to be used to mark landing zones or something. Anyway, there are pics on the net with argies who had phos burn right through them.

She busted the unions (excellent, IMO) and she handbagged all the losers. I admired her choices and yep, I paid council tax.

curbing the Unions so she could re-affirm her power is one thing, but destroying them so she could destroy their industries was despicable,

UK has lost a lot but you guys never realized it because you had your oil and Sovereign Funds that paid it all, a magic trick that only conservatives would pull

it might take 20 years, but eventually you guys will become desperate enough to fully join the EU and give allegiance to Germany and France,

Lady Thatcher to be Honored with State Funeral
Great! The sooner the better. Boom tish!

Seriously though, I wonder what her supporters and the proponents of her 'tough economic love' programmes think about this use of tax-payer monies?

It's funny how some Americans have this "romantic" view of a PM, without having to suffer her for years,

another myth and other funny illusions they love to have, like they were living in Disneyland

The majority of the Brits hate her, and rightly so

Utter rubbish imo. It was just apprenticeships renamed. I was on an apprentice (YTS) carpenter and joiner course for three years. I got my qualifications free, plus a work placement. If you were any good, most employers topped up your wages. Once qualified, you could then go and compete against the big boys, and earn good money.

Not reallly alot were only kept on for a short period. I did an apprenticeship whilst there was a lad that joined on the YTS. Needless to say I was paid more than that sucker for the same job and also he was shown the door once course was complete. It's cheap labour. period. You just got caught with it that's all.
