I believe that you've always required permission to fly the Union Flag in public places, but it's a law that is never enforced.

We do fly the flag for worthwhile things like sporting events. Sending our citizens to die at the hands of a bunch of freedom fighters in an illegal and immoral war doesn't really stir up national pride for some reason.
