It serves to show that as long as they live there should be no escape for those who commit or aid monstrous crimes. This is not some pickpocket or smash-and-grab artist, this is a man complicit in the deaths of millions. He knew from his first day at Auschwitz-Birkenau exactly what was happening there. As an SS-Mann employed in death-camps he is guilty of taking part in one of the greatest crimes in history. Does old age somehow make that less reprehensible? How odd to see that he himself appears to have acquired a moral sensibility somewhere along the way while those who follow the strange belief that age and distance in time are somehow get-out-of-jail-free cards appear to have none.
