^ The benefits might not be obvious to itemise. Expanding ones knowledge, understanding and acceptance of another humans ways and beliefs cannot be overlooked as unbeneficial, just because it could be tagged as "thinking too much"

You're absolutely right. But you're in a society of people who are in "me first" or "me only" mode most of the time. (Witness the driving style, the shopping carts blocking the lanes, etc., etc.) You need to be realistic about how much you can expect from such people. And, I'm not making value judgments here; just trying to get a handle on why, in areas like this, the thought processes are so different.

The Chinese got it right, right from the start.
They adapted to the Thais and took full advantage of it.
And well, you'd better do the same if you want to succeed here...

Smeg and I have similar opinions in many cases, it's just that the way he delivers his thoughts are way too blunt and repetitive for most to stomach easily.
Most of what he says is bang on the money. The difference betwen him and me is that i tolerate the crap element of Thailand and enjoy the better parts. His fixation on the limitations of Thai people and thier culture is alarming at times.

And that's what makes you very different. Smeg loses credibility because his vision seems to be so tunneled.

Very True, although i will stop short of adopting the Chinese Thai "qualities" such as exploitation and extreme greed.
I dont think i want to suceed here, rather survive.

This is the key. Just get by. Try to understand. Learn a little more each day. Adjust. See how it goes. Learn a little more.

No matter where you go you have things to learn. My only point was that it pays to take things slowly. Don't get frustrated if you don't understand things right away. Takes time.

Shopping, that is the most annoying thing to me as well. I still fail to understand why you need more than one handbag or more than two or three pairs of shoes.

Isn't a bumbag one of those plastic things from shopping centres that bums use to store their posessions in?

Are you thinking of "pla ra"? Looks like shit, smells like pig shit - the stuff farmers spread on their fields - and I've no idea what it tastes like. I can smell it 20 feet away in the markets when the air is still, 100 feet away if the wind is in the wrong direction.

    And she complains about Marmite!

And one other thing: saying "yes" when she means "no":

Me: You don't want this, do you?
    She: Yes
Me: Oh, here it is then.
    She: I don't want it.
    Me: Huh?

I've now changed these types of questions to a different form:

Do you want this or not?

    - little room for error when put like that, but it sounds a little rude to me. The "or not" sounds aggressive, but is quite commonly used by Thais for clarity.

Sadly, they don't and probably won't. The key is to try to figure out why they think and act the way they do and adjust your expectations accordingly. Otherwise you're just going to turn into another Smeg, and we certainly don't want another, do we?

I keep getting food piled onto my plate when I have quite clearly stated, "Look, I really am quite full. If I eat one more thing I will explode like Mr Creosote"....We had one of those Mexican-hat barbecue things once and I'm pretty sure that I ate a whole pig....I said, 'If I eat one more piece of pork I'll look like a pig'....'Too late' everyone said in unison...even passers-by joined in....making honking noises.

^Danbo, I had no idea plastic dolls could talk. Have they got string in their backs similar to the dolls my kid sis had which have pre-programmed messages/recordings?
