I rather think Chitown is somewhat typical of the average American whose awareness is determined as much by Hollywood inspired tosh as the quaint notion their country is always right.
Insofar as Viet Nam is concerned I'm afraid the idiot is guided by John Wayne's The Green Berets and therefore is unlikely to understand anything very much, least of all the fact they lost the war there because Uncle Sam was an inferior force led by a deluded high command which failed to appreciate the obvious: the war was essentially nationalist and not one of communist expansion.

    all true.

but why is it that it's always the same dim-witted americans that take the bait on (seemingly) obvious trolling threads like this?

How do you know it's just a troll? From my experience many Brits actually think like this. Read Stickman's article. He brings up the subject and he's not even an American. I have experienced it first hand on several of my trips to Thailand. There are many Brits who seem to have a big problem with America/Americans. I can be sitting at a bar just enjoying a beer and some Brit will go off about this and that when they discover my nationality. The thing that I want to know is why is it just them spouting off?

We don't have a problem with you, it's just that you are so easy to wind up and have an inability to laugh at yourselves, that makes it just too good an opportunity to pass up when we find ourselves sharing a table in a bar with one of your ilk.

Why is it the same dim-witted American who always throws water on the party... If you take any of this crap seriously, you are well past the entertainment value offered by this forum...

Murder, stabbing and bottling rates are a lot higher in the US than the UK and why?? Cause you can't grasp the concept of friendly banter without getting your knickers in a twist even between your own country folk.

what's worse is that maudib takes the bait nearly every time....even on a blatantly obvious trolling thread like this one.

christ, look at his his initial replies to this thread.

    sad, really.

and does anyone doubt that when the next anti-ameican troll thread pops up (countdown starting....now), it will be the same usual suspects clumsily 'defending' their flag on an internet message board?

    i don't.

The Vietnam war started in 1954. The US. essentially took over the advisory role from the French, who were leaving Vietnam after their defeat at Diem Bi en Po in 1954.

Actually the US. withdrew in 1973.

In 1975 we evacuated some embassy people and advisory personnel.

One thing you have to realize is that Vietnam was essential lost because the US government bowed down to some poove hippies that eventually birthed the PCP group of today.

If the US government spent the same amount of time focusing on winning in Vietnam as they did people pleasing we would have seen victory early on.

Instead they deemed outhouses important targets rather than Russian missile sites that were under construction and other military targets. The emerging PCP'ers swayed the government to tie the hands of the military. They micromanaged the Vietnam War and that was the end of it.

BTW I would wager that one "lost" (if you must call it that) war pales in comparison to all of Frances military losses.

But lets look at the numbers the NVA had over 1.5 million killed in action and the US had a tad over 58,000.

    So who won the war?
This overview is wrong in so many ways.
The prevailing American view at the time of the hawks in power was the 'domino theory'. If South Vietnam fell, the rest of south east Asia would fall. That is why the US invested so much into it. After South Vietnam fell their predictions did not come true. The US tried to win the war by engaging the 'enemy' using traditional military strategies which turned out to be disastrous and ineffective. The US tried to bomb North Vietnam into oblivion which eventually brought the NV to the peace table but did nothing to break the resolve of the NV or the Viet Cong. In fact, the majority of Americans, not just poovie hippies, were fed up with the war and the lies being told. Nixon had no choice but to try and bring the war to some kind of solution short of victory. Fact is, South Vietnam was corrupt to the core and no amount of American intervention could prevent it's eventual collapse.

Sorry for the digression but I weakened and took the bait.

And that explains so much about Thailand, it's power structures and Thai-US relations.
So few seem to realize this, it's amazing, as they say.

That is the key point. Besides not knowing how to fight against a shadow enemy, the regime in the south was so corrupt and inept, there was little or no chance for survival.
