One of the astronomer groups chose a quarter sq inch section at random, of what they had mapped out to be deep dark space with nothing in it, and focussed Hubble (?) at it for 3 days (?), at which time the scope started returning images of light from a whole host of new galaxies.
100 years ago the known universe was our corner of the Milky Way, today it's 93 billion light years across (Big Bang just 13.7 bn years ago!)...any guesses how big it'll be this time next century?
