No doubt where my home is because I built it...Insect chorus in the morning is something I will always love. Bang in the middle of nowhere with massive (mutual) village support when it's really needed.

Just a pity I haven't the balls to jack in my job and stay there.....yet!

I live in the country because I can. I used to live in the city because I couldn't afford country life here.

Funny that I told some gals in VV that we live in the countryside. Seemed they felt sorry for us until we explained we weren't really farmers but had a garden and used to raise ducks and chickens for fun. Gave the eggs away and such.

Different strokes for different folks I'd say rings true In the above example of peoples perspectives.

I live in a crumbling compound in the Magic Kingdom. It's my choice (the job location, not the crap accommodation) as nobody forced me to come here to the Middle East. Ah well, it isn't permanent. Chin up.

I live in Brisbane, Australia with my Thai wife, because I grew up here and know my way around. Although I lived on and off in Thailand with her, on the very outskirts of Bangkok, I couldn't live there permanently. I like more infrastructure : libraries and Latin dance places, for instance. But also I don't have enough money to live there comfortably.

Brisbane is a great place. Only 50 minutes drive to the South lies the Gold Coast, which although it is rather commercial, also has its charms once you get away from the coastal strip.

The hinterland is beautiful, with great hiking trails.

And the Sunshine Coast lies one and a half hours drive North (though parts are closer). Less commercial on the coastal strip, and arguably a more beautiful hinterland :

Not even an hours drive West there is some lovely rainforest to be found.

The thing I like about Australia is that compared to Thailand there are well-developed national parks with hiking trails and many picnic spots.

Great pics dancer. I know a couple of Australian chaps. One Chinese guy who said he disliked China and therefor his home base was Oz.
I can say these blokes did well, very well. They are the kind of guys that get what they ask for as their productions speak volumes. Looking back I feel fortunate to have worked with these fellows. Although difficult they were the best days of my life as far as achievements go.

I recall talking to a Chinese lady about social security in China, the puzzled looks I got were priceless.
Id love to tell you more about it but am really not allowed was the way she came off.

I recall showing the pics of back then the new house in Laos. Having visited for awhile I often wonder If I, "we" could ever feel right living there.

At that point I said to them I guess I would become a farmer. They all laughed. A teacher then just to keep busy I thought. I guess I'll spend a lot of time fishing.

Where do you choose to live and why?-image-jpeg

Chiang Mai, about 8km from the Thapae Gate.
We bought a house here about six years ago. Well, we bought one building and then had another built next to it. The old building is now really just used to cook and exercise.
The one real worry is how bad the traffic is getting, but people here generally seem so much more laid back than Bangkok, and I've caught the habit.
We've been very happy here really. We moved here from my wife's place north of Bangkok. I lived in BKK for nearly ten years on and off, but can't wait to change planes and get out of there now. You save a very high percentage of your earnings when you're happy to be at home.

    Travelled a fair bit.
NOw live in Phuket. It's OK. Great beaches, terrible traffic. (too) agressive drivers.
    If I could live anywhere?
1/ Holland (at least in the summer. Haven't seen their winters yet)
2/ Northern CA (I'm talking way north, like Orleans)
3/ Australia (been there a few times, heading to Taz next month to check THAT out)
    4/ Idaho (for whitewater kayaking)
5/ Phuket (for beaches and infrastructure)

Places I wouldn't want to live:
South America. Nice but too much crime
China. No thanks on the crowds and seemingly indifferent people
India. Too many beggars, driving is horrible, just too many people and don't really like their agressive behavior
Chicago Windy, cold, too much crime.
Indiana, Illinois or Ohio. Way too many cops, and stopping you for the petty-est shit
Nepal, Love the Himalaya, and the (hill) people, hate the food and roads
Japan. too many people, rules, tolls, and too expensive for quality food.

Haven't tried yet but think it would be GREAT:
NZ ( I will get there but waiting for their dollar to drop )
    Taz (next month)
    Sweden (next summer hopefully)

All in all, probably nowhere better year round as Phuket. (for me anyway) I like the jungle and guess what: There's nobody up there. Beaches are great. Thai food is my fav., Women are the most beautiful IMO. (and smile a lot!)

I lived in Manila for about 7 years before moving 50 miles south. Now, after 14 years here in my quiet backwater, I never go to Manila unless I absolutely have to (like a passport renewal trip to the Embassy); haven't been there for about two or three years now - when I do go, I can't believe I ever lived in that polluted, expensive, traffic hell.

Beautiful pics, LD. I have a few friends that are from there. I've only ever been to Northern Queensland, but I loved it. Best beaches ever!

Currently living in Shanghai. Almost four years now in China. Near future I'll be probably either moving to Thailand or back to Canada surprisingly.
Lots going on at the moment, and I need to make some big decisions soon enough.

I'm in Palawan, Philippines. I love the vibe here. Life's simple, relaxed and quiet in a way. People are genuine for the most part, but they like to stick their noses in everybodys' business. That can't be helped. Once you get over that part, there are endless things to like about life in Palawan. Life here has a raw earthy natural feel. There is an abundance of natural stuff around - wildlife, mountains, beaches, etc.... The air is fresh. There are many trails, caves, streams, rivers, islands, coves, etc to explore. Life's good here.
I am so unlucky that if I fall into a barrel full of D*ick**s, I'd come out sucking my own thumb!

Mandalay, Myanmar- but only for 27 more days and counting. It's a city that at first can be a bit hard to love, scratch beneath the surface and it's quite livable. The locals are friendly enough and will often go out of their way to help. Lots of Chinese and Indians here and thankfully they brought their cuisine with them, as some of you know, I fecking HATE HATE HATE Myanmar's traditional food. Oily poison. We now have "Mandalay Door to Door" a food delivery service and it is a welcome addition to a city with almost no mass public transport. There is a city bus- yes that's supposed to be singular and it's not a typo!

There's plenty of things to do if you're into outdoors activities, if not it could be a boring city for you. Almost no nightlife, but this is changing slowly. I'll miss the place for its proximity to amazing mountains, waterfalls and rivers. Will miss it less so for its dirtiness and lack of good public infrastructure. The city also badly needs a big park that people can easily reach imo
