Anyway, it is no myth that Thais avoid confrontation, but it can be badly misinterpreted (especially by foreigners). A Thai not arguing with you, or not openly disagreeing with you, or getting visibly getting upset with you does NOT mean that he agrees with you, or is not sick to the back teeth of your shit. He may hate every word you are saying, and you will not know it.......right up to the moment you go that one step too far, and he hauls off and tries his best to rip your head from your shoulders, or grabs a knife, or a hammer.

The real problem for foreigners is realizing that while foreigners generally grow up in a society with a spectrum of responses, Thais generally have two - overtly emotionless and berserk.

That's pretty damned accurate. It's can be quite infuriating to draw a blank response to a genuine grievance. Often it's best to walk away and count to ten. Never can tell how long their fuse is.

Two : No one stole it .
Three : They probably would have given it back to you anyway .

Quite insightful and oh-so true there "nidhogg".

Dealing with thaiz you have no idea where the "line-in-the-sand" is; because ONLY thaiz can see it. It's totally invisible to foreigners here...

Now I'll be the first one to say, you can push your Joe-Somchai, run-o-the-mill thai pretty darned far and as long as you have either the language chops or the moxy you can usually get away with it.

    BUT with that being said

I totally agree with "nidhogg" and their assessment that thaiz have basically two responses that idiotic smile / emotionless and the other one going ape shit on you tryin' their best to kill you and enlisting any thai standing nearby to join in the fracas too!!

I can't comment on the confrontation topic as I never seem to get into any confrontation with Thais and rarely witness any.

But what gets me is the question asking gig.

I've just returned to Bangkok after a 2 K road trip through the North East. I have a GPS but on the trip needed to get the handbag to ask additional directions from the locals on a few occasions.

Fookin hell, one would think I was asking her to murder her mother or something.

She was absolutely loath to ask another Thai anything at all and it was only after I threatened to turf her out of the fookin car that she would ask the fookin question.

What up with that shit anyway. ???

    Strange shit that.

Had to return the car to Avis at the Airport and could not find the fookin return office. Spent 30 minutes doing laps.

Fookin handbag near on had a mental breakdown after I had to apply additional pressure on her to ask another Thai for directions.

    All good fun innit.

Modest, humility ?, get real FFS , many Thai Drivers are quite prepared to blow holes in another, simply because they have been some how "offended" or "Embarrassed" by the other drivers "better driving" techniques which quite often occurs when the guy in front can drive faster than the guy who wishes to overtake him but can't, I see it almost every day , when the Thai Driver believes it makes him a better driver than you by overtaking, even if he risks his own life and that of oncoming traffic ,which makes him sort of "macho", just a few facts of the untold thousands of the totally lunacy which exists day in day out on Thailands roads and as you appear to know everything about life here in Thailand please ignore it https://www.google.co.th/#q=++Many+T...age+incidents+

Not really. She just knows that asking a Thai is putting yourself on a hiding to nowhere.

A Thai randomly stopped and asked directions would rather cut their own throat than say "I do not know". So, if they do not know they will simply make up any old shit to get you out of their face.

Your "handbag" (classy, by the way) knew that, and knew it would be pointless explaining that to you.

    Na,

lot of bullshit that mate, every Thai that she eventually asked had no problem at all assisting us.

Speaking out of your arse. Not one gave any attitude.

All right terry, you give us your "holidaymaker" insights into why she was so reluctant to ask. Try to avoid the use of "blurter" "on the rag" and "wimmen, innit".

Give it your best shot mate.

Maybe she was shy, maybe she don't like asking questions, maybe she had the painters in ????

Any one of a plethora of reasons except for that bolliks you wrote.

I told you that the Thais she asked assisted us no problems.

    That's how it panned out.

Chinese are the same, they MAY know, in which case you got lucky, but if they don't know they're not going to say so and will send you on a merry chase.
The problem is you don't know whether they really know or not.

Actually he's right, see my post re the Chinese.
In this case you got lucky, it could well have gone the other way.

Yes they have no problem with assisting but the fact is your 'handbag' cringes at the thought of having to ask. Believe me my missus still hates doing it after 9 years. She says it makes her look stupid in the eyes of the other person.

Yup. Sadly, terry is in his "rose tinted spectacles" phase.

One hopes that when reality blind-sides him like a Mack truck, he does not get hurt too badly. However, (as someone who knows f*ck all about Thailand of course) I would have to say that Thailand can be quite unforgiving to the terminally naïve.......
