The broadcast has to be in HD mode too, so your rarely watch anything HD over here

I understand that, but say I was watching a Blue Ray disc movie on my HD Ready TV which has a 720p resolution (1080p being HD) am I watching it in HD or is it still 'getting ready'?

HD Ready is still High Definition. Full HD is 1080p.

Native resolutions are usually 1024 x 768 or 1366 x 768 for HD ready and Full HD is 1920 x 1080.

You'll get a more detailed picture on a higher resolution set, and the Full HD sets will be able to display Blu-ray at it's full resolution and frame rate.

You will only notice a difference though when watching a very detailed source such as Blu-ray on a larger (42"+++) screen.

I would just invest the extra money in a 1080p . forget the blueray angle.
H264 ( MPEG4 class 10 ) devices are here which don't require a DRM encumbered disc.

On a somewhat related note, LCD monitors seem to be dropping in price quite nicely. I saw a Samsung 23" for 7Kish the other day in my local IT barn.

I picked up an HP 22" for around the same price. I was going to go with the Samsung, but the HP has a nifty vertical pivot function.

Full HD screens have 1:1 pixel correspondence - one physical pixel to represent each pixel of the resolution in the material.

HD Ready screens have fewer pixels, but can still display 1080p material.

The difference tends to only be visible at close range, and the best HD Ready plasma screens from Pioneer look so good that they still beat many Full HD sets from other manufacturers.
