ok baby maker your right I was a touch soft with that response.Dont accept him back into Australia under any circumstances make him return to what ever country he emigrated in the first place to OZ.
When I see a farang claiming to be an Aussie acting like a useless brainless individual like this I get pissed off and have absolutely no sympathy for him.

hate to tell you but this is my brother - and he's born and bred aussie. Yeah hes fucked up by doing this, however he HAD infact lost his passport, and DOES have a thai gf he'd been living with when he overstayed in Thailand. Its not right that he stole - infact its pretty fucking stupid i'll give you that!!

Couldn't tell you! We haven't spoken with him since hes been in jail - we've had email from his mates who went back there about where he is and whats happening. That said, i know hes been desperate for cash - hes not a complete ass - hes just screwed up.

Anyway, word of advice (if you don't know this already) money talks very loudly in Thailand and sometimes certain crimes (up to manslaughter!) can be mediated with the aggrieved party (the jeweler, with some grease to the certain other authorities) that will shorten or even suspend your brother's sentence. Could pay through the nose but it depends on the local lawyer you hire.

Thanks dude, ill speak to the family - they had been told about something like this but atleast it reiterates it. From what I know, he was hungry, scared and realised he'd stuffed up royally but what can you do? I'm sure he's pretty scared and realised how much a tool he was - but cmon - its not like he killed someone. Once he gets home im sure he'll pull himself out of his shit and realise the error of his ways. When your in a foreign country, semi-alone, with no food and passport - its pretty easy to understand why he screwed up like this. As i said, its not right, and im pretty sure he wasn't aware he could just walk into the embassy. I know hes been sentanced already but hopefully we can get it reduced. Thanks again mate.

The man is a criminal. He will pay for his crime, the price for which will be determined through negotiation with the aggrieved party, the police and the presiding judge.
Everything else is just mitigation and, frankly, so far cuts little ice here.

If in your delinquency you rationalise crime as an expedient you will suffer the consequences if caught. The average wage here is a mere 300bt for a day's work. Needless to say, Thai judges get quite grumpy when able bodied farang from rich countries overstay their visa through feckless hedonism and base lust and then resort to crime in order to further their miserable ends. Sentences can be quite draconian and certainly reflect a desire to deter other wastrels from emulating this idiot.
