All of this negativity about Thailand is such a load of crap, I find myself having to give my thoughts and opinion on the topic. To believe that Thailand is any more dangerous than a lot of other countries is rediculous. Yes, there is a corrupt police force and yes, there are murders that occur, but how is this so different than the rest of the world?

Pick a country in the world, any country, and you will find police corruption, crimes against tourists and murder. This is life and how it exists everywhere. Writers that sensationalize the situation in Thailand should be ashamed of themselves. Go write about these problems as a world issue, not a country issue.

If one visits a large city, the dynamic of corruption, illegal activity and murder can be easily be found and documented. This is nothing new or anything that any one country has a monopoly on. One needs to know what parts of a city to stay away from to decrease the odds of being robbed or murdered. If you do not do this, you can expect to pay the consequences.

Being fŕom the US, where carrying and owning firearms is legal, I learned at an early age what parts of a city to stay out of, what bars to frequent and what kind of behavior is unacceptable in that particular part of town. If tourists took the time to research these things prior to visiting a foreign country, there would be a lot less tourist crime IMO.

To have a writer paint a very dark picture of a paticular country and how it is supposedly worse than any others is utter BS. The author of such books should be dragged down to the darkest part of their resident town and dropped off to see how long they last before getting into some sort of trouble. As usual, money and fame are the driving forces for writing such nonsense. Personally, I refuse to read this type of literature since there are so many other worth while books and articles to spend your time on.

Shame on these idiots who try to capitalize on such a universal problem throughout the world. With this being said, I do feel bad for every unsuspecting tourist or individual who stumbles into a situation that may cost them some money or even their life. They should have done their homework.

Just a minor point like. Koh Tao is not even close to being a large city.
You will find that farang who come unstuck are usually, but not always, resort based tourists.
As a matter of interest did you post this before the German got hacked up with a garden hoe in Udon?

If it's at the crime scene, in the bar the raped and murdered were at that night, next to the beach where they were raped and murdered, and the people in the photo are local residents who know who did it, but refuse to speak up, then yes.

17 Nov 2014 — Thank you all for your continued support in demanding justice for David and Hannah.

As many of you are contacting me and requesting updates, I thought I would send out an update to you all.

I must apologize that I cannot provide you with much detail at this point in time as we are waiting to hear back from the UK investigators that returned from Thailand. Rest assured as soon as information is at hand I will send out a more comprehensive update. The findings of the UK Investigators report will determine how this protest moves forward.

    Agree about the locals.

Well educated Chinese-Thais are the exception to the rule in my experience.

Who the fuck is Christopher Jarkins and the The Migrant Worker Rights Network???

Hitching their tail to this creates a possibly compromised situation does it not?

Harkins has been involved for a while. He's the one that initially set up the petition to raise the case in Westminster and get the British police involved.

I've always been interested in the number of posters here who hate Thailand, and Thais. It does beg the question, "Why then do you live in Thailand?"

Realizing that many of these Thai haters don't live in Thailand, that begs the question. "Why then do you bother to post on a Thai forum?"

Before the question is asked, No, I do not live in Thailand. Nor do I hate Thais or Thailand. I post here because I once lived in Thailand for six years, visit frequently, and have friends there.

Just always found it strange for people to live in a foreign country that they hate, and whose people they detest.

Hate is perhaps misleading. Despise is a more accurate term. Quitting a country simply because one despises most of the population is silly. If that were to be the criterion then no one would live anywhere for it is a feature of the human condition that most societies are in the main scarcely tolerable.

I quite like pad thai, drinking lager at sundown most nights of the year, gazing at an endless succession of attractive women, etc and it's possible to maintain a lifestyle without too many irritations. I still despise their society, their hypocrisy and their lack of moderation but nothing will change that.

You can get a Pad Thai in most Countries, you can get a beer in most Countries and you can leer a woman in most Countries , so, why stay in a Country that you despise?

Clearly, you have never been to Scunthorpe.

The point, yet again seemingly lost upon the less intellectually blessed here, is that what I have described is not available in any one place throughout the entire world on any given day in any particular year.

Thailand offers the whole package and it is for that reason one settles here. Their society and it's cultural hallmarks are quite irrelevant.

The trick is to enjoy one's prejudices and find solace in them as any superior being might do when sharing space with imbeciles and compelled to observe their antics.

I am in a majority of one but then, that is the case wherever I may be.

If you lòoked at the post time, you would see it was weĺl after the posting of the storey about the German being attacked in Udon.

The point was that if tourists took some time to research the country they were visiting, it may shed some light on how not to act or where not to go. Does this mean if all tourists did their homework all tourist violence would cease? Of course not. The German was in the wrong place at the wrong time which could be said about any violent crime. I still feel one can decrease the odds of being attacked by being better informed about the country one is visiiting.

My point about large cities having corruption, illegal activity or murder was more about these qualities existing everywhere and that by staying alert or thinking about what you are doing might prevent you from being a victim. Again, Thailand does not present anything different when it comes to violent crime.

Police warned to cooperate with NHRC in torture probe

A member of the National Human Rights Commission warned today that he would propose the commission to take legal action against police officers responsible for the interrogation of the two suspects in Koh Tao murder case if they do not cooperate with the pane.

Dr Nirand Pitakwatchara, chairman of the subcommittee on civil and political rights of the NHRC, said that his panel had given the police officers until November 24 to give testimonies to his panel regarding their treatment of the two suspects who are foreign migrant workers.

He said that he had clearly explained to the National Police Office that his panel’s investigation had nothing to do with the murder case itself but with the police treatment of the two suspects – whether they were tortured or not.

Dr Nirand admitted that he didn’t understand why the chief of the officers responsible for the interrogation of the suspects didn’t cooperate with his probe.

“We only want to know the police procedure of the interrogation whether there was torture because as long as the court has not ruled the suspects guilty they are still regarded as innocent,” said Dr Nirand.

Are the British Police that observed the so called investigation writing their report with a crayon, or is intense political negotiation going on concerning how candid that report will be?
Seems they've had enough time to at least make a statement, it's not like any investigation would be jeopardized by such comment.

Returned home and stated that they will be releasing their report in the new year.
