Anyone who resorts to using a bottle in a bar fight should be locked up for a year or two just on principle - cowards.

Sorry I must be missing something here! ITS a bar fight! You use anything and everything to stay a live. Girls have knifes as well. Sorry not advocating violence but what do you want a set of bloody rules written up.

If anything, melancholia can be their worst enemy, not booze.

I can see how my post might be taken as a slam against Finns, but it was not meant as such. I'm basing that on my experiences in Helsinki, St. Petersburg, a memorable overnight ferry transit from Helsinki to Stockholm, and the opinions of Finns I've spoken with. It certainly wouldn't stop me from taking the opportunity to visit Finland again should such arise, any more than (repeated) bad experiences around drunken Brits wold stop me visiting the UK again. Finland is a much more wealthy and successful country since the last time I was there, so maybe there isn't so much melancholia these days (now there's a word one doesn't hear enough anymore), although given the current Nokia share price one can't be sure.

My fists have always served me well. Now if someone pulls a knife, it's a whole different kind of fight.

I would tend to agree with you but here in Thailand it's de rigeur. Anyway, to hit a Thai on the head with anything less would have had no material effect and thus a waste of effort.

I was in nutty park Udon a couple months back and I saw this Thai bird try to use what I thought quite a large SUV of some sort.

Glad you have big fists. Next time you bump into Mike Tyson with an attitude problem at 3am. Bat fights have no rules. That is why they are so dangerous.

Sad bugger anyway. Not likely to catch his plane home is he?

It's a rare barfight indeed that couldn't have been walked away from or otherwise avoided.

I put myself through college, supplementing my GI Bill, by working as a bouncer in a big bar in Northern redneck Florida. Tallahassee, a big college town, lots of college jocks, redneck roofers and construction guys, and bikers. It was rare when I couldn't talk a situation down. They would occasionally go to fights, but not often, and then only when the participants were so drunk they could be fairly easily handled by sober bouncer staff.

Just in case, fellow Teak Doorians should know, never, ever say "finns are just like russians" to a Finn. Especially a drunk Finn.

^A Finn in Helsinki came at me when he found out I was just back from school in Russia. He was so drunk he could hardly walk, so no blood no foul. His sister apologized. They really hate the Russians. With some reason.
