Finnish tourist behind bars after Phi Phi pub row

    Phuket Gazette – Sunday, March 18, 2012 11:46:00 AM

The argument started in the Slinky Bar, but ended outside with a broken beer bottle over a female bar manager's head. Photo: Facebook

PHUKET: A Finnish tourist is being held at Krabi Provincial Prison pending charges of causing bodily harm after he allegedly struck a female bar manager over the head with a beer bottle just south of Phuket on Phi Phi Island.

Ms Saen Jeen-no, the 29-year-old manager of Breakers Bar on Phi Phi Island, suffered a serious head injury and was transferred to Bangkok Hospital Phuket in Phuket Town, where she arrived at 9am last Friday and was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Lt Wissawa Sanaeha, the officer at Phi Phi Island Police Station in charge of the case, named the Finnish tourist as Jake Petri, aged 31.

“He arrived on Phi Phi with his girlfriend [also from Finland] about a week ago, and the incident happened on his first night on the island,” Lt Wissawa said.

“Mr Petri and Ms Saen became embroiled in an argument at the Slinky Bar at about 2am. Both of them then left the bar, where they continued to argue. Mr Petri struck Ms Saen, and then ran away,” he said.

One of Ms Saen’s female friends grabbed Mr Petri’s girlfriend so she could not escape, Lt Wissawa explained.

“She told her to phone Mr Petri and get him to come back. So the girlfriend called him and convinced him it was best to turn himself in.

“He did. We kept him here at the police station for two days and then transferred him to Krabi Provincial Court, where he was taken into the court’s custody,” Lt Wissawa added.

“We are aware of the case. We are still waiting for the investigation to close before we present this to the court,” Sub Lt Wattanapan Umal, an inspector of Krabi Provincial Police, told the Phuket Gazette

Bail has yet to be set, the Gazette was told.

Hospital staff told the Gazette today, “Ms Saen underwent a successful operation. She has now been discharged from the ICU and is in a general recovery room.”

I have a funny feeling that the dude will be having some serious regrets about doing that.

I recon he will do some serious jail time unless he coughs up with some equally serious Baht.

Anyway fok him, what a total tool, should of just went home and banged a big one through his girlfriend.

    Drunken Euro backpacking trash.

I realize it's a stereotype, but Finns are as a group the worst drunks I've ever been around. It's unsettling because they tend to be fairly well-behaved when not drunk.

Let me remind you that Finnish and German people are actually about the richest people on this planet. As they are running free market economy, well be it against the EU. Now if one is a kunt, do not blame the nation. So you might want to rethink.

#8 ^. It's certainly a stereotype in your own mind. An urban legend if you will.
I spent a full year plus in Cyprus as UN Operations Officer, and was an associate member of the Finnish Club with all of their duty-free booze for all of that time: not once did I encounter anyone so intoxicated as to be labelled as you say 'the worst drunks'. If anything, melancholia can be their worst enemy, not booze.

The Finn returns to a bar where he'd been in a dispute with some hysterical, scamming, xenophobic, ignorant "you farang, you pay now" Thai woman - who most likely had lunged at him but come of the worst for it - because his girlfriend was being held hostage by some low life prostitutes in a third world country, perhaps?

Most of us, after a few beers, would have wanted to kill the bitch.

Comical. They are rampant binge drinkers, although renowned more for passing out than bottling women.

I can sympathize with the Finnish guy to a degree. Don't get me wrong, what he did was stupid. I have gone into these "establishments" and have too been ripped off. I have felt, to some degree or another, the desire to bash a bottle over someone's head over certain "business practices".The last time it happened I was with the Falang GF. I am Thai, not Falang. If I did do there would be a greater likelihood of getting out of it than if a Falang did it. Still I don't do it. I, however, am not an absolute idiot and have never done it, and would be able to control my emotions not to do it. But as has been said before...doing it on an ISLAND???? There's not alot of places to run away and go hide.

Sorry, but it is well documented that Finns have a huge alcohol related problem. In Finland, alcohol related deaths outnumber any other reason (including cardiovascular and cancer!).

Please name a country that doesn't have an alcohol problem? Don't name any ME countries as they to have the problem.

Many countries do, indeed have an alcohol problem. The one in Finland is known to be particularly serious. Its well documented, and a fact rather than any "dig" at finns.

Amazing to see just how efficient the police and courts are in Phuket when it is a falang facing prosecution, isn't it?

On the other hand if you are a rich or influential Thai you can pretty well do as much damage as you please and the police will still proffer an invitation to attend a police station at one's leisure, as exampled by that chap who tore a Cambodian woman in half and the army chappie who ran over the doctor because she had told him off for his poor parking.

I wonder what happened to the scummy taxi drivers in Phuket who beat the German senseless putting him into a coma because he refused to submit to extortion?

The Thai have to be the most repulsively hypocritical people currently crawling on the planet, n'est-ce pas?

As already suggested, the Thai manager probably deserved a hammering and indeed the tap on the head was probably just her karma biting her in the arse for all those rip offs she has perpetrated on innocent farang.

I believe the woman you speak of being torn in half by the son of yet another Army General was in fact Lao? the son drove over a kilometer after the accident with the woman's torso dangling from his windshield. There's no justice for poor people, that's why they are the most religious.
