Where have I heard this before?.....oh yes, the back to the land movement in the 60ies--early 70ies. The old 40 acres and a mule thing. It was just as naïve and unrealistic then as it is now and all the hippy, anti-establishments types were soon back in the city looking for a job with the captains of industry.

Meanwhile, Snubbles, the revolutionary, is boarded up in some Seattle basement, while I; the "big oil" corporatist, capitalist destroyer of the earth (along with Booners of course) is virtually off the grid in NE Thailand. We grow and produce much of our own food and trade with neighbours for much of what we don't produce ourselves.

Just about to drill a bore hole for virtually unlimited water, and looking for a wind pump to stick on top. We have steady and almost constant wind here so that should work just fine.

Not sure, but I think maybe Booners is living a fairly free and self sufficient life too. So Snubbie; who do you think is going to fare the best in this coming revolution of yours? How many revolutionaries can you raise anyway...and what are you going to do about all those 300 million+ non-revolutionary types, who just stay home and think people like you are all nuts?.....

Do please give us the heads up (for old times sake) when you and your friends start the action; just so we can brew up a decent supply of beer and make sure the pickup truck has lots of diesel in the tank....that sort of thing. Thanks....

Why is it that you right wing nutters cling to this hope? You must believe that only greed gets you ahead yes? It takes your boot print on someone elses back to get ahead right?

Why is it that progressives are at the head of the most successful businesses in America? I bet you think they all live in mommies basement?

You need to go back and look at the pics in your build thread. Far from off grid. I guarantee you that my carbon footprint is a fraction of yours.

Once again refer to your build thread. You have lived in Vancouver so think for a moment dippy. This is the land of self-sustainability. I grew up that way and will have no problem.

Those of you dependent on cars and other things will fail miserably.

WTF has my build thread got to do with any of this? Most of our power needs are for AC...and that's only for a short period every year....and we could do without if necessary, We just choose not to do without because it's available and affordable.

All your day-dreaming is just a re-cycle of what's been done and talked about before, by previous generations of mal-contents and misfits. They ended up changing nothing and neither will you, so try and get used to it.....dippy.....

Where do you come up with this stuff anyway? I don't believe in anything of the sort....never had my boot on anybody's back. Not ever. WTF are you rambling on about....

Well, now that you mention it Jeremiah Johnston, I cut and split wood out back here, when the need arises....and I catch the odd fish although it's not quite the same as the North West coast that I was used to. The fish here pretty much give themselves up. We stocked our pond with several thousand of them so it's not exactly sport fishing.....but if your revolution takes off, at least we'll have protein eh?.

You do realize that only small numbers of people could ever sustain themselves in this new world order of yours. There are people living up north of Whistler in cabins, with little turbines being driven by mountain creeks and wood stoves to heat their shacks.

Totally crazy fuckers that just can't make it in the city and could never hold down a job or anything that normal folks do. They manage OK, but if you had to move the entire population of Vancouver up there at short notice, there might be a bit of a breakdown in the new order....

Get real Snubbie. It's not going to happen so stop talking bollocks and living in a state of chronic anxiety over big oil and the nice Koch family. I remember guys just like you way back in the early 70ies quoting experts who were assuring us that the oil was running out. Actually it was not running out at all; it's just the OPEC guys shut the flow off to do a bit of arm twisting for a while.

I remember only too well the nonsense that was being talked and the panic that was abroad amongst the chronically anxious. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Every time there is an economic downturn, the same stuff emerges over and over. When the economy recovers, it's all relegated to the trash bin again.

That was over 40 years ago, and now, here we are with the place swimming in oil and the commodities markets in free-fall because there is far more product that buyers now. Of course that will change once again when the supply/demand balance is restored. It's just a matter of how long it takes.

When old Thoreau talked about men living in their state of quiet desperation, he must have had all the Snubbies of the world in mind...... That was a long time ago.... but nothing much has really changed in that regard..

Here's another little tid-bit from Thoreau that would apply to many on TD:

"How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live."

Quite an interesting fellow was Thoreau, although he did talk quite a lot of bollocks in between his notable quotes....

Maybe he was referring to the Solyndra guys.....that was a pretty successful venture... I mean relatively speaking, a half billion writeoff is not that bad by the accepted standards of the current administration.... at least not when "green" energy is concerned. .

Key figures caught up in the Solyndra scandal ranged from the imminently visible President Barack Obama and administration officials to relatively unknown Obama fundraisers.

Investors in Solyndra, a green energy solar panel manufacturer, as well as Solyndra employees were also pulled into the controversy. The scandal stemmed from a Department of Energy guaranteed loan issued under pressure from the White House despite reservations held by the treasury which was not given time to do its due diligence as dictated by law.

Progressives at work making America a better place for all.; and they are so damned good at it......

Snubbie will be back again with tales of tax breaks for oil companies. In the end we have to decide if it's better to give tax incentives to companies that actually work and deliver the goods, or unrecoverable loans to companies that don't work...which appears to be the progressive way of doing things.....

World governments give out billions of dollars each year, but only to scientists who agree with the official Gore line which is "well, if it is hot, it is climate change, as if it is cold. It has nothing to do with the sun, and my bank balance is massive and growing as big as the arctic icecaps are growing as well. Please do not think this is a bankers trick and keep saying people who are not convinced are Big Oil followers, and of course Bankers have nothing to do with Big OIl> Now Carbon Tax is the way forward so that Me and my Mates can create a HUGE derivatives bubble to rob what is left of the worlds money to us and our mates". Anyone looking to prove climate change is true or not (as in, man made climate change) does not get government funding.

In answer to the comment about to come from Snubbings - Big Oil and Global Banking are the same thing; to separate big oil from Bankers would be like trying to take a specific jug full of water from a bath tub. They are one in the same. If you refute this, you clearly know nothing about the oil industry.

You could say that about any industry. Everybody from mom and pop corner shops to national governments rely on the banking industry to float credit that allows them to operate and hopefully prosper.

Just about everybody has a relationship of one kind or another with banking....unless you're a refugee in some third world refuge living on aid....you deal with a bank one way or another. Even then the plane that brought in the aid was likely financed by a bank somewhere.

Anything from a simple home mortgage or car loan to a billion dollar hydro dam project is financed by banks. Banking is the cornerstone and lynch-pin of the world economy. You don't have to love them but you sure as hell need them.

It just depends on who owns the bank and how is it structured. Most banks are publicly traded, so anybody who believes they make so much money (sometimes they do and sometimes they don't) just needs to buy in and pick up the dividends and growth in stock values.

I've owned bank stock for decades. Very good long term investment with solid and generally reliable returns, but subject to the ebb and flow of business. Some banks do better than others....surprise huh.

Of course if you truly believe that banks are owned and controlled by reptile shape shifting aliens you should probably play it safe and avoid them....as well as oil companies and anything else that makes money.

If this is the case, then you need to stick with green energy companies and other highly ethical enterprises of the sort. At least you won't feel so bad when your investment returns are zero and you can have the satisfaction of knowing you were helping to save the planet from all those science deniers and reptiles etc.

Never fear, your government will look after you in you old age.....

BBC’s Climate Change by Numbers supports big risk in place of big facts

The BBC is about to screen its first climate change-dedicated documentary in some years. The show, Climate Change by Numbers, is all about the statistics at the heart of the effort to understand the scale and pace of human influence on our climate. Three mathematicians – Hannah Fry, Norman Fenton and David Spiegelhalter – explore the background to three numbers:

0.85˚C – The amount of warming the planet has undergone since 1880.
95% – The degree of certainty climate scientists have that at least half the recent warming is man-made.
1 trillion tonnes – The total amount of carbon we can afford to burn – ever – in order to stay below “dangerous levels” of climate change.

BBC Four chief Cassian Harrison said the show “puts aside the politics to concentrate on the science”. Nice try, but no: science and politics can’t be separated on this or indeed any other topic where there are wide economic and social consequences, and a good dose of uncertainty.

But everyone involved in the programme is doing us a great service in reminding us that climate science ought to be allowed to be just interesting sometimes. And this kind of approach offers a far more sturdy basis for public conversation than tired insistence upon a monolithic scientific “consensus”.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Read Paul holland British Antarctic survey.

Very simple answer to global climate change, change in the winds.

Whilst glaciers are melting in Arctic, glaciers are expanding in Antarctic.

The alarmists are being screwed over by climate terrorists.

I wish it was melting, the less ice the better, more likely one area losing , while another gains .
Mother nature should melt the lot and give us some much needed pure water, I don't care if some posh toffs beach house get flooded, it will give the fish a place to breed back up too.

Alarmists, remember watching programs about cults brainwashing people?
you shook your head at their naivety...
