i apologize for starting a thread with a quote (and from an editorial, no less), but this is topic that is crying out for discussion. in fact, i started a thread on this topic on the other channel and was reminded of it when i came across this piece....
Hunker Down With HistoryThe greatest mistake Israel could make at the moment is to forget that Israel itself is a mistake. It is an honest mistake, a well-intentioned mistake, a mistake for which no one is culpable, but the idea of creating a nation of European Jews in an area of Arab Muslims (and some Christians) has produced a century of warfare and terrorism of the sort we are seeing now. Israel fights Hezbollah in the north and Hamas in the south, but its most formidable enemy is history itself.
the author of this piece is not willing to go as far as i am concerning the nation state of israel. it seems clear to me that the events of the last fifty odd years demand that it be removed from its present geographic location. put it in europe, the american midwest, fuck, put it in isaan for all i care. but the absolute worst place for it to be is where it is now. give it to the highest bidder.
i'm not denying the israelis a homeland. far from it. however, that homeland shouldn't be in a place where everybody wants it out of the neighborhood.
of course it would be a logistic nightmare, but it could be done. if a man can be put on the moon, if the atom can be split, if animals can be cloned, a few million israelis can be moved to another spot on the planet.
i work with people who are older than the state of israel.
it was a mistake..and a recent one. let's fix the mistake and move on.
