Protestantisum is generaly accepted to have started during the reformation in the 1500's. Heres a diagram from Wiki
It's useful as a guide but as it goes on historical rather than religious text's many devout christians (of whatever denomination) will not accept it, relying on religous documents of their chosen denomination as a matter of faith.
Personaly I dont really agree with much of it either. I'd put the beginings of the Eastern Orthodox Church with the Council of Nicaea around 300 some time making it one of the earliset forms of christianity still practiced today. The RCC as we know it today can probably be dated from The Great Schisum around 1000, it was basicaly caused by a power struggle between the Patriarchs in constantinople and the bishop of Rome.
