Adds insult to injury IMHO, but what do you boys think? The Imam says it will be a "cultural" centre open to all but the building now standing is already being used as a muslim prayer space.

Well, might at least keep the neighborhood safe from further Muslim attacks - at least if you assume they won't want to kill their own people and cultural centre...
Agree, though - our civil rights groups are doing a good job selling out our freedoms to our opponents.
wow, someone still thinks the muzzies attacked the wtc. amazing!

does the north pole have oil reserves? if so, yes, he did it.
Heh...of course it were them cabal of george bushmchitlercheny's that wired them towers and told them Jooooos to stay home that day! After all, it were for the OIL, right!![]()
PC is definitely going too far. Don't the damn religions have enough tax exempt property already?

Everyone in the US today has civil liberties and rights, except the white Christian middle class.
I just think this move is an affront. I also heard this imam's org has some bad ties which happen to be funding part of this. I'll dig up some research on that.
I don't understand a Mosque or any religious building near the WTC. But a mosque? Not good IMO, as the hijackers used Islam as the main reason IMO, with political reasons seemingly second.
"Radical" or twisted interpretations. It is, Islam.

Geeez....when you lot going to get over it....move on....fill in the hole and put a McDonalds on it.

anytime cobber.
What's the big deal? So they will have a prayer or cultural location. A number of people that died on 9-11 were of the muslim faith, and no I am not referencing the Saudi Arabian murderers, but were workers in the buildings. It might do some muslims some good to go and reflect upon what the extremists of their faith have done. Did NYC restrict any Catholic churches from operating in close proximity of schools subsequent to the child abuse? If the muslim center is able to meet the building code requirement, then it has every legal right to be there. If and when it is taken over by Pakistani / Yemeni/ Saudi Arabian nutters, then by all means bulldoze it down. However, there are a great many non violent muslims in NYC that are loyal Americans that might benefit from the center.
Stunts like this are nothing more than to keep the people divided.
I for one don't believe the events of 911, however, for those that do i'm sure this will just further fuel the fire.

^ What happened to the towers then?

1st Amendment applies to all, not just those that people don't like. There is a reason that the USA is the only country designed around the ideas of the Enlightenment.
Personally I'd like to see the tax status of all religious institutions reset to be compatible with their clear attempts to make a profit and influence politics and public opinion.
bibo ergo sum
If you hear the thunder be happy - the lightening missed.
This time.

hope they put up a big neon sign to.
I'd say don't tar all muslims with the same brush. The greatest majority are just trying to do the same as you and me, raise a family (hopefully better than the previous generation), work hard etc, live comfortably.
A small minority (who sometimes gain a lot of power) preach a radicalised version of their faith. Not a lot different to some of the Christian loonies in my country and in the USA.
So if they want a mosque somewehere near the 9/11 site, I say let them if it complies with planning considerations and local laws. Why not acknowledge the multi-racial makeup of US society? And the fact the the terrorists don't seem to care if they kill Muslims, Christians, Jedi-Knights and anyone else all at once.
I could certainly live without their yodeling 5 times a day if I was working down there.
Sure that's why we have planning laws. Muslims also don't like the tolling of church bells, in their way of thinking, it scares the angels away.Originally Posted by Humbert

Storm in a teacup. The proposed centre is not remotely visible from ground zero. I worked in the World Financial Centre for a while (which is next to the ex-WTC) and didn't even know Park Place, where this old decrepit garment factory is that they want to turn into whatever, even existed. It comes off Broadway, opposite City Hall. No longer the financial district.

^ True, it's two blocks away.
How about this new little gem:
As controversy surrounds the construction of a 13-story mosque just two blocks from Ground Zero, FOX News has learned that an effort to place a second mosque close to the hallowed site in New York City is in its advanced stages.
...
The Masjid Mosque has raised $8.5 million and is seeking an additional $2.5 million to begin construction. While it apparently has not settled on a final location, it has told donors it plans to build very close to where 3,000 people were killed in the September 11 terror attacks.
In fact, the website appealing for donations boldly states that it plans to “build the 'House of Allah' next to the World Trade Center. Help us raise the flag of 'LA ILLAH ILLA ALLAH' in downtown Manhattan."
...
Masjid mosque leaders claim on their website that they are deeply involved in converting people to Islam and run a special program to convert those who are interested.
Efforts to reach mosque leaders were not successful. Calls left with Naheem Mohammed, the mosque’s treasurer, were not returned. Calls to the mosque itself were not answered. And efforts to reach Abdullah El-Khory, the president of the mosque's board, were not successful.
Julie Menin, chairwoman of Community Board 1, also declined to return several calls. The board, which monitors and approves all development in the financial district surrounding Ground Zero and has been stung by criticism from the families of 9/11 victims, is permitted to assess the impact of building a mosque at the site.

Sorry, its from Fox News, but erm, it seems they're the only news desk reporting on the story.![]()
