Maria, I've just met a girl called Maria.

Don't cry for me South Carolina
The truth is I never left you

Sen. John Ensign ’s parents gave $96,000 to a former campaign staffer with whom he had an extramarital relationship and her family, his attorney said Thursday, denying that the payments violated campaign finance laws or Senate ethics rules.

“The payments were made as gifts, accepted as gifts and complied with tax rules governing gifts,” lawyer Paul Coggins said.

Coggins said Ensign’s parents “decided to make the gifts out of concern for the well-being of long-time family friends during a difficult time” after learning about the affair.

Republicans Reject Science; Scientists Reject Republicans

As per the title, let us focus on one item: Scientists and Party affiliation. Once, there were sizable portions of the scientific community in basically all portions of the American political scene. No longer. As can be seen in the table to the right, "Partisan and Ideological Differences", of 2500 polled scientists, just 6 percent of the polled identify themselves as Republicans (as opposed to 23 percent of the overall population).

    Thick as a Brick

Not very surprising, and a real shame that knowledgeable, educated people are unable to be conservative without being lumped together with creationists, anti-gun control freaks, anti-abortion fanatics and other paranoid, bible-bashing nut cases.

But I guess that is what you get when your ideal supporter is Joe the plumber, and science is a thing to be ignored, rather than respected.

A must read for those who enjoy poking fun at these new type of Republicans.

RNC Web site promoting anti-Semitic, anti-Latino, and pornographic literature

It's not very often the boys at AMERICAblog get to type the word "clitoris" in a political blog post, but thanks to Michael Steele and the headquarters of the Republican party, today is that special day.

Forget that copy of Playboy, kids, you don't need to go any further than your local RNC.com Web site. Of course, in all seriousness, it's far worse than that - the Web site of the Republican National Committee is also promoting literature that is overtly anti-Semitic and anti-Latino.

It all started when earlier this week the GOP started promoting it's new Web site, http://www.gop.com/obamacard/. The site is supposed to showcase how much money President Obama is supposedly spending by letting you, the visitor, spend money too on your new "Obama credit card."

Just what products does the RNC propose you buy with your new Obama credit card? Anti-semitic, anti-Latino, and overtly pornographic literature - with pictures to boot.

Basically, the RNC site is set up as a faux online business, like Amazon.com, where you can buy goods by doing word searches. Search for the word "car," for instance, and you get pictures of various cars and how much you can pay for them with your ObamaCard.

But don't stop there. Do a search for products dealing with the word "Jew" and the RNC suggests you buy the book "The Jews and Their Lies" (bottom left).

Type in "Latino" and get "The Latino Threat."

But the real fun starts when you type in the word "gay."

Gay, you see, is banned by the RNC (at least they haven't lost their sense of irony). "Homosexual," however, is a product you can buy at the RNC site, and oh what they showcase with that word (note the two men in the upper left corner - perhaps they're just very close friends, like Lindsey Graham and Aaron Schock).

A few other fun words you can search for on the RNC Web site...

    Bondage, Escorts and Anal.

And if you have the time, try "boob" and "clitoris" too - you won't be sorry. But don't try "vagina" - Republicans ban vaginas. But you already knew that.

Disclaimer: I am a raging liberal

However I think that the total meltdown by the opposition party in the USA is a bad thing. The whackaloons who seem to have hijacked the Republican party are utterly laughable but having a totally ineffective opposition to *any* governing party cannot be a good thing imho.

^ Agree they are ineffective to a point (pretty difficult to be otherwise with Dems controlling all three houses). Still, anyone who believes in Obama's outrageous policies, puts up with Biden's gaffes and allows Pelosi's lies needs rehab for their Kool Aid habit. Obama will bankrupt the country, just like California, NJ and NY are. Hard-working people moved to America to be free of tyranny, have freedoms and make money. Greedy? Those same people have donated enough to charity to outpace many countries' GDP. Rich people and corporations will start to flee, just as they have escaped from CA and NY. I expect big shifts in Congress and the Senate in 2010.

I don't. Obama is looking as safe a two termer, to me, as could reasonably be the case at this point.
Furthermore, his administration is so far ahead of the previous buffoons it beggars belief. The assertion he's Dem/Black/Moslem or just plain different is a problem that only vexes an increasingly irrelevant, embittered minority.
Politically speaking, it took a few years for the realities of the 21st century to hit home in America. But it has, and the country will be better for it. There are always people that cannot deal with change.

Well, the world will hopefully move on by them, while they are busy imploring Jeebus to save their souls and their 'values'.

What's funny is that these, increasingly irrelevant, extremists are so close in behavior to the Muslim extremists they detest - same fanatics, different god flavor.

^ totally off topic, but Tom Wolfe (author of the Electric Kool Aid Acid Test ) wrote an excellent editorial in the NY Times about the moon landings. You should check it out. He is also the author of 'The Right Stuff' btw.

    None of the above.

If they haven't already eliminated themselves, they will have done so in three years' time.

^ I think Romney is gaining speed. He would put America back to business. Newt is too old. Palin -- I like her but wouldn't want her running the country (mind, couldn't be worse than the current loon POTUS). Jindal? Nah.

Three years before the last elections, who would have guessed an unknown black Senator would be the next President? Likewise, I doubt the next republican nominee has even been mentioned yet.

    Yup.

It's too early. Way to early. Media like to poll, and speculate, however.

^^Agree. The current crop are in fact members of the losing team. If the GOP cannot find someone outside the loser group they will further lose more seats in Congress.

I think they are not allowed to discuss it publicly? Being a moron will surely count against him though.
