"My party is full of racists."

"My party, unfortunately, is the bastion of those people -- not all of them, but most of them -- who are still basing their positions on race. Let me just be candid: My party is full of racists, and the real reason a considerable portion of my party wants President Obama out of the White House has nothing to do with the content of his character, nothing to do with his competence as commander-in-chief and president, and everything to do with the color of his skin, and that's despicable."
Lawrence Wilkerson, Former Colin Powell Aide, Blasts Sununu, GOP, As 'Full Of Racists'

Lawrence Wilkerson- Retired Colonel, ex-chief of staff to General Colin Powell, card carrying Republican.

An honest Republican- truly an endangered species. One thing he omitted is the despicable slander of the US military as well, which unlike the Republican party of today is not a racist institution, and unlike the Republican party of draft dodgers wearing their flag on their sleeve, is full of people who are willing to put their lives on the line for their country daily, not demean it's most important institutions for cheap political point scoring. Despicable.

The Meltdown continues. Time for some navel gazing after the election? We'll see.

Here is a brief history of John Sununu's (ex- Governor of New Hampshire, Chief of Staff to Pres Bush snr) recent bigotry:-

Obama is foreign. Obama doesn’t understand the “American system” because “he spent his early years in Hawaii smoking something, spent the next set of years in Indonesia, another set of years in Indonesia, and, frankly, when he came to the U.S. he worked as a community organizer, which is a socialized structure.” [Fox News, 7/17/2012]

Obama doesn’t know how to be an American. During a conference call, Sununu claimed, “The men and women all over America who have worked hard to build these businesses, their businesses, from the ground up is how our economy became the envy of the world. It is the American way. And I wish this president would learn how to be an American.” [Conference call, 7/17/2012]

Obama is a lazy idiot. Sununu described Obama’s debate performance as “babbling,” “lazy,” and “disengaged,” and dismissed the possibility that he could do better in the future. “When you’re not that bright you can’t get better prepared.” [Fox News, 10/4/2012]

Obama has no class, just wants to be cool. “That moment of using the B.S. word was kind of a self-defining moment for the president,” he told Sean Hannity. “No class, wants to be cool. Sacrifices the dignity of the presidency for appearing cool to a magazine that works for some of his base.” [Fox News, 10/25/2012]

John Sununu is trying to make this election a racially-charged election, trying to drive a wedge of white supporters against Obama.

But it is not going to work because people see through Romney’s empty promises, and that’s why a moral statesman like Gen. Powell will abandon his party’s nominee and endorse Obama for a second-term.

    Sununu, you are the unAmerican.

Of course, you see this racially charged diatribe and worse circulated daily in the right wing blogosphere- compelling evidence of the GOP's near complete meltdown to toxic waste.
The final joke? Sununu, who accuses Obama of being unAmerican, was born in Cuba.

We do have our problems (but I think time will curb some of the attitude ): AP poll: Majority harbor prejudice against blacks

In all, 51 percent of Americans now express explicit anti-black attitudes, compared with 48 percent in a similar 2008 survey. When measured by an implicit racial attitudes test, the number of Americans with anti-black sentiments jumped to 56 percent, up from 49 percent during the last presidential election. In both tests, the share of Americans expressing pro-black attitudes fell.

    Snip

Most Americans expressed anti-Hispanic sentiments, too. In an AP survey done in 2011, 52 percent of non-Hispanic whites expressed anti-Hispanic attitudes. That figure rose to 57 percent in the implicit test. The survey on Hispanics had no past data for comparison.

    Snip

Experts on race said they were not surprised by the findings.

    Fucking embarrassing

52% non-Hispanic is hardly "most" Americans

Prejudice has always been a condition of Man and no number of laws/regulations/PC-ness is going to eradicate it.

    Central Thais distrust Southern Thais

    Japanese are prejudiced against Gaijin

    Chinese consider Americans 'running dogs'

Germans are prejudiced against the Turks in their country.

    Etc., etc.

Guess what? There ain't no little unicorns running thru the multicultural fields singing Kumbaya...

Nothing new here- disgruntled conservatives & moderates have been saying it for years, but eloquently put:-

Over the years, in thrall of Norquist and LaPierre and the Tea Party, the GOP has steadily lost its own center. What was once the party of grownups -- the party of fiscal prudence and sound judgement -- is increasingly slipping down a slope of its own and becoming a party of outliers and extremists. If nothing changes -- and this was the point of Scarborough's plea -- it will push away many who identify themselves as Republicans, but who increasingly find their party lacking the seriousness of purpose necessary to lead the nation.
David Paul: The Absolutist Politics of Norquist and LaPierre Will Destroy the Republican Party

All Obama has to do is remain detached and statesmanlike in the GOP's latest attempted suicide, and reap the political benefit. His latest hustling to make a deal seems unpresidential and obeisant frankly.

The fiscal cliff was always a misleading metaphor. When withholding goes up for everyone in the first pay period of the New Year, there will be a temporary drag on the recovery. But Republicans, even of the Tea Party variety, will be unable to withstand the political pressure. Within a month, they will approve legislation to cut taxes on the bottom 98 percent. The longer they delay, they more they will destroy their own party. Obama holds the cards.

    Robert Kuttner: The Zombie Party

According to this thread, the Republican party entered it's meltdown after Obamas convincing election, and the disastrous end of the Bush era. Now, after Obamas convincing re-election, the GOP is still in meltdown- if anything even more so. A stubborn and intractable rump of self styled "Real Conservatives" (but nothing of the sort) dominate the party, and are impossible to deal with- "Absolutists", as the top linked article calls them. They are also out of step with the electorate on every major issue, and even more so given demographic trends. Boy, what a way to destroy a once good political party. This is not the party of Eisenhower, or even Nixon & Bush snr.
