Britain appointed lawmaker Jacob Rees-Mogg, who has expressed scepticism about the need to fight climate change as the new business secretary, raising concerns that he could delay the target of reducing net zero emissions by 2050.

Rees-Mogg, nicknamed "the honorable gentleman from the 18th century" because of his poshness and trademark double-breasted suit, was on Tuesday put in charge of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, which is responsible for the government's strategy on climate change.

In the past, Rees-Mogg has expressed concerns about "climate alarmism", said humanity should adapt to ( ), rather than mitigate, climate change, and warned that the drive to getting to net zero emissions is responsible for high energy prices.

After his appointment, Rees Mogg said his priority would be to provide help for people dealing with sharply higher energy bills and that the government will soon bring forward a package to help the public.

New Prime Minister Liz Truss has backed the legally binding target of reducing net zero greenhouse gas emissions by the middle of this century, but has supported scrapping green levies and bringing back fracking if there is local support.

One contentious issue facing Rees-Mogg is providing a clear and settled policy environment for business after successive Conservative governments have produced energy and industrial strategies that were abandoned just a few years later.

The 2017 Industrial Strategy, which aspired to make Britain the world's most innovative economy, was abolished by Rees-Mogg's predecessor Kwasi Kwarteng in 2021, who said it was a "pudding without a theme".

British business leaders told Reuters they need certainty to underpin investment and expressed scepticism Rees-Mogg will be able to provide that assurance.

One British business leader said that Rees Mogg, who embraces his image as an English gentleman, "was more in tune with the Industrial Revolution than the digital revolution".

Rees-Mogg, 53, the current minister for Brexit opportunities, has pushed to force all civil servants back to the office, which was dubbed by former Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries as "Dickensian".

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson has previously backed Rees-Mogg's campaign. Johnson's spokesman said everything needed to be done to get government officials to return to their normal office working environments after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The son of a former editor of The Times newspaper, Rees-Mogg was raised by his nanny - who now looks after his own six children - and then studied at Eton, an exclusive private school, and Oxford University, where he studied history.

Rees-Mogg joined J. Rothschild investment management in 1991, focusing on emerging markets, and later worked in Hong Kong. He then set up his own asset management company.

Since entering politics in 2010, Rees Mogg lobbied for a purist vision of Brexit and was appointed Leader of the House of Commons in 2019 in his first ministerial job.

Clearly you either have no understanding or you are just trolling. Not that it matters, because your posts are worthy of nothing more than the occasional snigger.

The fact is that every MP has been voted in by their constituents and any one of them can be selected as PM by its own Party. There is no need to have a national vote to decide which member it should be; in fact this would be more destructive than useful. For example, it would allow Party opponents to try and elect the worst candidate.

To make a comparison between the Tory leadership contest and the US electoral college or the Russian election system is complete nonsense and does nothing more than show your ignorance on the subject.

I suggest you put on this cap and stand in the corner at the back of the class.

I'm discussing three countries representative democracy, what is your subject? Laying out for all to see has upset you, it seems.

The comparison between the three illustrates the hypocrisy of labelling UK and NaGastan as being representative elections.

Comparing them to the total representation of the Russian citizens opinions, unfortunately for many, is starkly illustrated.

    Where are the 16% nations?

The UK's 0.3%, on behalf of their citizens - "elects" -

The schoolboy, seeing through her lies, is not amused.

The other 16% countries, where are they? At the "four/five o"clock" point?

How long will the clock stop at six o'clock?

with any luck the green energy future that promises to bankrupt the country, and any other country that rushes headlong into it, will be put on the (hopefully coal fired) backburner for a while.

putin, for all his madness, is at last knocking some sense of reality into the eco lemmings and their suicidal orthodoxy.

i read that the cost to recharge the batteries on one of those overpriced electric cars is now approaching that of a tank of petrol.

No. There is a two phase procedure:

The constituent member, to stand in a GE haven't, they have been selected by, authorised by, the unelected, constituent internal cabal.

    THE "rules".

    Political parties

    Just a moment...
"Most MPs are members of one of the main political parties in the UK - Labour, Conservative, Scottish National Party or Liberal Democrat. Other MPs represent smaller parties or are independent of a political party."

"To become an MP representing a main political party",

There are two hurdles to jump:

Phase 1. "A candidate must be authorised to do so by the party's nominating officer."

Internal decision. No constituent citizens vote involvement.

Phase 2. "They must then win the most votes in the constituency
    . "

    1. The person is, parachuted onto the election card, by the party's nominating officer. Presumably a local administrator, possibly by a national body. With no reference to the constituents, registered, voting citizens.

    2. There is one official party choice, to select at GE/By-Election time, by the constituents, registered, voting citizens.

It is very easy to make fun of Rees-Mogg because of his affectations. On the other hand, having his own fortune he is beholden to no one and he is never shy about giving his opinion even when it goes against the majority view. I don't agree with everything he says, perhaps nothing at all, the point is that leadership teams need some characters who are unafraid to argue a contrarian view. There is a place for him in this government.

There are more than a few people I know of (go to 2:50 in the video) that should be spared.

However, if the UK could rid themselves of subscribers to The Telegraph it should tamp down the crazy.

    Speaking of which.........

    Nope. Not even fvckin’ close.

    Prices today in London

    EV = 21.2 £/500 km
    ICE (fuel-efficient) vehicle = 50.65 £/500 km

Welcome to Britain. Everything is terrible

    September 7, 2022

    By Adam Westbrook
    Video Producer

If you don’t follow events in Britain that closely, you might be surprised to learn just how precarious things have become over here in the past six months.

Yes, things are hard in many countries, but in Britain we’re experiencing what we Brits would politely describe as a veritable omni-shambles.

Most grave among the current crises is a sudden rise in the average cost of home energy bills, which soared by 54 percent in April.

This, alongside rising food prices, has pushed inflation into double digits; a recession looms. That, in turn, has prompted workers across a range of sectors into strike action: To live in Britain this summer has meant navigating a slalom of shutdowns, from our rail network to our trash collection. For anyone hoping to get away from it all, mass flight cancellations, airport staff shortages and the continued fallout from Brexit all conspired to ruin thousands of vacations.

And that was before temperatures in July broke all records, killing around a thousand people and creating conditions that ignited a string of wildfires.

Astonishingly, in the midst of these disasters, Britain has had no leadership. After being ousted as prime minister in July, Boris Johnson spent his final months in office on two holidays and a self-indulgent victory tour, while his potential successors battled it out.

On the day we were warned our energy bills could rise further to levels many of us cannot afford, not a single government minister appeared on the radio or television to reassure us.

To capture the bewilderment and anger that millions of Britons feel, Opinion Video turned once again to the satirical character Jonathan Pie, a fictional reporter created by the comedian Tom Walker.

In our new video, he introduces Liz Truss, who this morning begins her first full day as prime minister. She won the leadership contest by promising that only she can solve the veritable omni-shambles but — as Pie argues — her low-tax, small-government, big-business ideology is precisely what got us into this mess.

Jonathan Pie’s acerbic style is not for everyone, and you should be aware that this video contains strong language and blue humor. We made this creative choice because his performance expresses the furious exasperation at 12 years of Conservative rule — with more still to come.
