Nope totally wrong. Ukraine was independent from 1991 to 2014. It was NOT in the Russian security alliance (CSTO) and Russia had no problem with it. They even managed to negotiate leases for the Crimea naval base for all those years.

It was ONLY after the US claimed all of Ukraine for itself in 2014, when it initiated plans for it to join NATO.
