Thread: The Problem with Plastic

When I was a kid in Africa we only had paper bags for everything. It seems that in America this was the same unril recently. I understand that paper means cutting down trees but they can be properly farmed with replacement trees being planted as a condition of a harvest permit.

Unfortunatley now it seems that even paper bags have a plastic liner.... Thanks Central Tops Supermarkets. Assholes.

That is awesome that you cut the rings. A craft beer company in Florida makes edible six-pack ring holders. It is a brilliant idea! Why don't other beer companies catch on? There is hope yet!

The devastating effects that plastic six-pack rings can have to both wildlife and the environment have been proven time and time again. While many iterations of the packaging have been seen over the years, here’s a look at a very creative and sustainable alternative to the standard six-pack ring.

Saltwater Brewery in Delray Beach, Fla., recently released edible six-pack rings, a brand-new approach to sustainable beer packaging. These six-pack rings are 100 percent biodegradable and edible—constructed of barley and wheat ribbons from the brewing process. This packaging can actually be safely eaten by animals that may come into contact with the refuse.

Head of Brand at Saltwater Brewery Peter Agardy says, “It’s a big investment for a small brewery created by fisherman, surfers and people that love the sea.” Brewery President Chris Gove notes, “We hope to influence the big guys and hopefully inspire them to get on board.”

They could also be made with recycled paper, no? I hate the plastic shopping bags. They end up everywhere. I walk the dog around the neighborhood and I see them up in the tops of trees snagged on a branch. Not to mention they're almost worthless for bringing home the groceries. They'll bust open almost as easily as a wet paper grocery bag. The reusable cloth bags are the best idea going right now.

Whoever invented the plastic grocery bag should be drawn and quartered.
