Post-Election '16 DNC and the Democratic Party

The DNC is looking for a new chair.

For all of you members here, do you think the Dem party has maintained the right policies and platforms or is a change needed.

If change is needed, what should be changed?

Of course HRC won the popular vote but the Dem Presidential candidate lost the election, and the Dems are a minority in the House and Senate - AND - a minority in a record number of State Legislatures, and the GOP mas most Governorships.

Can they compete for the mid-terms in 23 months? In 4 years?

The DNC will vote for a new Chair in February.

Candidates for DNC Top Job: Obama Failed Us
They rarely mention him by name, but the message from those running for party chairman is clear: the president left Democrats in a weakened state

The top candidates to lead the Democratic National Committee are positioning their campaigns as a repudiation of what they see as the political legacy of President Barack Obama.

Though they rarely mention the president by name or address his policies, Labor Secretary Tom Perez and Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison have sent a clear message that Mr. Obama has left the party in a weakened state.

Messers. Perez and Ellison—along with state chairmen Jaime Harrison of South Carolina and Ray Buckley of New Hampshire, who are also candidates for chairman of the DNC—are seeking a mandate to reverse Obama-era tactics that cut funding and attention to local parties and left Democrats with far less power in Congress, governorships and state legislatures than when his presidency began.

“This needs to be the very last cycle in which the presidential candidate takes over the DNC,” said Mr. Harrison, speaking at a forum for candidates earlier this month. “The DNC is not just about winning the presidency. Amen?”

The audience, mostly Democratic state party chairs, responded “Amen.”

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz to Resign Amid Email Hack
The next party chairman will be selected by the committee’s 447 voting members in February. It is the first open election to lead the DNC since 2005. When a party holds the White House, the president selects the chairman and the election is perfunctory.

Under DNC chairs selected by Mr. Obama—first Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine and then Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz—the DNC cut funding to state parties. Local Democratic apparatuses withered; in Idaho the state party needed committee funds to rent space to hold its presidential caucuses in March because it couldn’t afford it on its own.

Since the president’s election in 2008, Democrats lost control of Congress and suffered even steeper losses in state capitols, where they hold a minority of governorships and have lost control in dozens of state legislative chambers.

At his year-end press conference last week, the president said he was proud of his own national campaigns but acknowledged he is leaving Democrats in a deep hole.

He was unable to transfer his own popularity down ballot or “build a sustaining organization,” he said. “That’s something that I would have liked to have done more of,” he said. “But it’s kind of hard to do when you’re also dealing with a whole bunch of issues here in the White House.”

At the state level, some elected officials say that while they remain loyal to Mr. Obama, his presidency has left the lower rungs of the party in disarray.

“There has been too much focus by the DNC on the top of the ticket and too little organizing in between presidential races,” said Philip Bartlett, chairman of the Maine Democratic Party.

“The work of state parties in off-years and midterms are critical to building long-term infrastructure and maintaining grass roots strength,” Mr. Bartlett said. “I think that has been undervalued by DNC leadership and both state parties and the down ballot candidates they support have paid a heavy price.”

Mo Elleithee, a top DNC official under Ms. Wasserman Schultz, said of party officials, “They don’t want a chair who is going to disrespect or critique this president, but they want a recognition that things have not been going well and a plan to fix it.”

    There is much to fix.

While the Republican National Committee dispatched officials to expected 2016 presidential battleground states in 2013, the DNC didn’t hire a national field director until after Hillary Clinton became the party’s nominee this summer. At that point, Clinton aides had taken control of the party apparatus.

Now, even though Mr. Obama remains immensely popular among Democrats, the case made by those aiming to replace him as the head of the party and their allies isn’t subtle.

“The painful truth is that despite President Obama’s strong victories in 2008 and 2012, the Democratic Party has lost enormous political ground over the last eight years,”
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said last week at a rally for Mr. Ellison. “Whatever the leadership of the Democratic Party has been doing over the last many years has failed and we need fundamental change.”

Mr. Ellison didn’t mention the president by name but made the same point.

“We know that even a good car sometimes needs a tune up,” he said. “You’ve got to maintain and update and invigorate…If you just let it slide it tends not to work so well.”

Mounting a campaign critical of the Democratic establishment is trickier for Mr. Perez, who has served in the Obama administration since 2009 and was on Mrs. Clinton’s vice presidential short list.

“We got too reliant on our data,” Mr. Perez told state party officials Thursday during a call launching his campaign.

The labor secretary, who is remaining in Mr. Obama’s cabinet as he campaigns for party chairman, said the 50-state strategy that led Democrats to congressional majorities in 2006 and 2008 has “atrophied.”

“We have to be a year-round operation and that’s where we have fallen short,”
    he said.

You have to laugh. Ted Cruz ""predicted that Democrats would become "obstructionists at a level we’ve never seen" and will "filibuster absolutely everything they can".

This is a bloke who once read Green Eggs and Ham out on the floor, and shut the government down.

    Mindblowing fucking revisionists, these c u n t s.

I think a public debate should be conducted.

The Candidates for DNC Chair Should Debate Each Other in Public
Coming off of a scalding loss, the whole party—and not just the insiders at the top—needs to hear the plans of the men and women who would lead it.

Meanwhile back at lalaland HQ they are doing their marxist dance on who can be the most doctrinely pure libtard of them all. Its not unlike the RNC used to be, with each trying to prove who was the most 'conservative' of all.

The event’s moderator, MSNBC’s Joy Ann Reid, asked the candidates how the party should handle the Black Lives Matter movement.

    Lost cause?

By the time the Trumpkins are queuing up for food stamps, drinking mercury and can't even afford a McDonalds, the next election will take care of itself.

From Post #6. A good way to alienate supporters and voters.

The DNC held a forum for candidates hoping to become chairman of the Democratic National Committee on Monday at George Washington University. One candidate, Sally Boynton Brown, the executive director of Idaho's Democratic Party, urged Democrats to provide "training" to teach people to be "sensitive" and "how to shut their mouths if they are white."

"My job is to shut other white people down when they want to interrupt," Brown said.

What is your opinion of Vincent Tolliver's comments?

And seriously, the Dem Party cannot represent the constituent groups of gays and muslims at the same time.

It's needs to pick one or the other.

DNC boots candidate from chairmanship race for criticizing Ellison’s Islamic faith

The Democratic National Committee is kicking a candidate out of the chairmanship race after he told The Hill that Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) should not be the party’s next leader because he is a Muslim.

In a Jan. 5 email to The Hill, Vincent Tolliver, a former House candidate in Arkansas, said that Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, should not be chairman because of Islamic positions on homosexuality.

“His being a Muslim is precisely why DNC voters should not vote for him,” Tolliver wrote. “Muslims discriminate against gays. Islamic law is clear on the subject, and being gay is a direct violation of it. In some Muslim countries, being gay is a crime punishable by death.”

“Clearly, Mr. Ellison is not the person to lead the DNC or any other organization committed to not discriminating based on gender identity or sexual orientation,”
Tolliver continued. “I'm shocked [the Human Rights Campaign] has been silent on the issue. A vote for Representative Ellison by any member of the DNC would be divisive and unconscionable, not to mention counterproductive to the immediate and necessary steps of rebuilding the Democratic Party.”

Two factions....hmm....As for the leading DNC shills, we have Ellison and Tom Perez.

Whenever people mention the changes needed for the Dems - who don't control the House and Senate and got demolished in the state legislatures and governerships - it gets very quiet. I don't think Dems have much faith in their own party, they just bash the current potus.

Democrats Spar Over Party Leadership, Anti-Trump Tactics

DETROIT—The outpouring of protests that have filled U.S. streets has encouraged Democrats, but the party is still uncertain and at odds over who should lead it in the era of President Donald Trump.

The doubt and division were in evidence Saturday in Detroit, where party members gathered at a forum of candidates for the next chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee—a nine-person field that has yet to winnow to a consensus choice, three weeks before the party election is to be held.

Former Labor Secretary Tom Perez spoke at an event in Birmingham, Ala., in August 2012. Mr. Perez appeared at the forum in Detroit on Saturday after having received the endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden on Wednesday.

Former Labor Secretary Tom Perez spoke at an event in Birmingham, Ala., in August 2012. Mr. Perez appeared at the forum in Detroit on Saturday after having received the endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden on Wednesday.

Amid concern that the two leading candidates—former Labor Secretary Tom Perez and Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota—are too closely identified with the 2016 presidential primary’s opposing factions, some of the longshots attempted to get a fresh look as an alternative that could damp intraparty squabbling.

“If we come out of this DNC chair selection process with a sense that half the party just got defeated or rejected, we’re going to have a hard time taking it to the real opposition, the Republicans,” said South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, a late entrant into the field of candidates. “The wolf isn’t just at the gates. The wolf is in the gates.”

Mr. Ellison is a favorite of the party’s progressive wing and has been endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, the former 2016 presidential
candidate who brought a wave of new, younger voters to the polls. Mr. Perez is favored by many veterans of the Obama administration; on Wednesday he won the endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden.

Other candidates for the chairmanship who participated in the forum were South Carolina Democratic chair Jaime Harrison; New Hampshire Democratic chair Ray Buckley; Sally Boynton Brown, executive director of the Idaho Democratic Party; political commentator Jehmu Greene; Peter Peckarsky, a Wisconsin lawyer; and Sam Ronan, a 27-year-old veteran from Ohio.

The competition among the candidates is being waged at a time when party leaders are looking to build on an increase in civic engagement and activism in the wake of Mr. Trump’s inauguration—including the Jan. 21 women’s marches in cities in the U.S. and around the world, demonstrations at airports against the president’s border-entry restrictions and a deluge of calls to Congress to protest Mr. Trump’s cabinet nominees, such as Education Secretary designate Betsy DeVos.

At the forum, the candidates offered up their credentials for helping the party build on the anti-Trump movement.
Mr. Buttigieg said he was the only DNC candidate to attend one of the women’s marches; most of the others were attending a conference with big Democratic donors in Florida.

South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, a latecomer to the race for Democratic Party leader, said at the forum that he was the only candidate to attend one of the women's marches on Jan. 21; many of the other candidates were at a conference with donors in Florida.

Mr. Perez said, after the travel ban had been imposed, he and some of the other DNC candidates had been at an airport demonstration in Houston, the site of an earlier candidate forum.

Mr. Ellison talked about his history of working with progressive activists in settings such as picket lines with labor unions.

Mr. Harrison said he traveled to Washington to personally deliver to South Carolina’s U.S. senators hundreds of protest letters regarding Trump policies.

Mr. Buckley said his decades of experience in politics have equipped him to deal with the extraordinary moment the party now faces.

“Our party is in unprecedented crisis,” he said. “The next person to walk into the chair’s office can’t be somebody that says, ‘Now what do I do?’”
