Patience is required here. Massive, giant gobs of it, even for the most mundane things.

Bought a new Refrigerator from Power Buy in Robinson the other day. Seems like a simple enough task.

I went to other local shops but they didn't have a large one - Farang style.

So im in Power Buy and I shit you not the first 4 or 5 I ask about - solly no hab. On-lee display. Must order maybe one month.

So I ask what fridge to they actually have in the shop that I can buy today and not wait a fucking month - they have 3, and only one in the size that I want.

3 or 4 touts there following me & the wife around like vultures full well knowing what the fuck I am looking for....

What, you just gonna let me walk around for hours asking about shit you know you don't fucking have???

Cant a person just go buy a fucking fridge without a massive time wasting run around??

Rinse & repeat for anything that isn't normal, every day thai stuff.

^Same thing has happened to me trying to buy a washing machine at Carrefour once. I just left the store and went to another appliance store which had what I wanted in stock.

Do you live in the sticks where there is no choice but to buy from PowerBuy?

No intent to infer that but right you are.
Different expats with different situations are effected to various degrees. In my case no noticable change. Actually big improvement for my immigration dealings since they opened office in Roiet city. Saves the long drive to Amnat. Some but no significant change in $ to baht exchange rate. Cost of food up but would have happened no matter the ruling gov anyway.
Those 3 items are the only things I have to worry about. Life is simple.
    All good, Norts.

Yet, we've been around too long to have recognized the rather made up false concern emanating from Chuck, and others, regarding their reasons for discomfort and weariness here - or anywhere, for that matter, that's considered "home".

Justifying their inability to acclimate and adapt is derived easily, so create an acceptable out and excuse using the current political situation - which really doesn't factor in regarding their facility to cope - regardless of military-based or civilian governments, as their essence is largely the same and truly has no direct impact or effect on everyday lives - native or foreigner.

Not buying the old story of the repressed expat refugee angst.
These types will be uncomfortable wherever they light, as it's not the conditions of the locale, but instead themselves.

Surin, so arguably a larger Thai town. And I went to quite a few local appliance shops before Power Buy.

Guess I could have driven around more but it was already like the 4th place ffs.

Seems simple: those with the greatest frustrations should pack up and leave immediately...oh? can't because of finances, family, certain addicktions, etc?...don't leave then, but do keep complaining because that leads to a better life.

    Amen.

Disagree. I never left home because I disliked it. Work took me away initially.

But there is some truth in your post - I damn sure cant acclimate, or, rather, don't particularly want to. I always find myself trying to make Thailand work for me, and that just leads to frustration & annoyance.

Like that fridge post I made above. Just an example, not a deal breaker of course, but I could have ordered that shit online with my morning coffee in the US & had it delivered & installed and not wasted an entire day of my life on the process of "buying a refrigerator". Couple clicks & done - off to another project.

Sounds dumb, I know, but all that adds up day after day after day.

Getting ahead of the Slick's looming Estate and getting the fuk out sale.

    Keen.

I believe they've a rather large Western-style confection oven on hand, as well.

Really dont see the problem, from my point of view things have improved roads are being upgraded all over the place, corruption is being tackled as is human trafficking, no protests in the streets, lots of drugs taken off traffickers, riceberg has been sold off, even corruption in the temples is being got down on.

I Have no problem with immigration there are rules which I know and I am quite happy to go along with then, it has got easier with postal and online 90 day reports if you want, did mine this morning the new office is about 5 KM from home and I was in and out in less than 5 minutes.

In the time of the military Govt I have traveled from the Malaysian border in the south to the Burma border in the north and have had no trouble with either the military or the police.

The local (small town) hospital is getting its second new building since the military took over. emergency patients are seen immediately non emergency usually within an hour. Was reading just this morning at hospitals in Auckland NZ 'doctors should being able to see patients within 6 hours' but they were having trouble meeting that target.

New shops opening here Makro and Global House in the last few months street food and things I buy are pretty much the same price. same people selling the same things in the market.

We also bought a new fridge recently, knew what we wanted and looked around all the local shops and Tesco saw there were several that would do the job and got the best deal from a small shop, a good guarantee, something chucked in for nothing and free delivery.

As far as the economy goes there is a balance of payments surplus foreign exchange reserves are at a record high exports are up and export produce prices are rising, 3.2% rise in GDP, the Baht is too high but has been improving in the last month.

Yep things are good, will be on the road again next week meanwhile got to finish cutting the grass tomorrow bloody stuff wont stop growing but I had to do that before I came here.

Not hatin' on your outlook at all, I'm even a little jealous. Kinda

But in my view, literally none of that is happening other than a couple of token offenders rounded up & paraded around to make it look like somethings happening.

Dog & pony show, like always.

    yep, agree.

taksin wanted to be like malaysia's mahitir, and did many good things for thailand, but he wasn't one of the boys and prem wanted him gone.

the current military boys are exceeding expectations and their idea of dealing with opponents is bringing them in for an "attitude adjustment session".

it's all thai; it's all cool; and most of the thai public support it.

How dim can one person be?

Thaksin upset the Thai elites and almost delivered on democracy, so he had to go.

Unless there is some kind of conspiracy here, why are you posting. According to you, you already know what I'm going to say.

People like you are one of the reasons I am looking to relocate.

As for Birding's post, most of what he reports was in the system already, so I don't see how the military can be awarded any credit for his particular view of Thainess. New roads and hospital improvements don't happen overnight.

chassamui, most asian countries don't have western democracies.

if that's why you'd like to leave thailand, so be it.

I guess finding a niche in business and working at it is paramount.

The main problem is most cannot see the opportunities when it is staring them in the face and when they do see the chance they do not have the experience and knowledge to convert the chance into something worth something long term without other third party support.

Most harbour their secrets and ideas and are extremely suspicious of other parties who could possibly fund them and make their dreams real.

We are all human after all!
