I went to Bali last year and enjoyed the holiday. As it's predominantly Hindu there the religious factors are fairly benign. For most factors in my areas of concern it's considerably cheaper. Housing, transport, socializing. Cheese and wine are cheaper which is a bonus.
even though I was away from the main tourist areas, language was not such an important issue as it can be in Thailand.
    Anyway, we shall see.

Then you should be made aware of how politics feeds into economics. Obvious basket case = Thailand, which is made obvious when you see how it has fallen from probably being Asean's most promising economy 12 years ago.
You 'should be made aware' that the economic situation of Thailand as far as the people are concerned is as varied as the people concerned. It has been thus pretty much over the last 30 years since I first arrived, with the one exception of 1997.

As for being 'the most promising economy of ASEAN 12 years ago', the layers of subjectivity in that term gave me a good laugh, so thanks for that.

    Promises Promises, eh?

For years threads like this were full of dark predictions from people regarding the departure of Elvis from the building. That has turned out to be rather less dramatic than certain soothsaying departees were prophesying too.

I still believe that virtually no westerners base their decision to stay or leave on geopolitics. From Chatchai through Thaksin to Prayuth...name me the policies that have resulted in widespread white flight please.

No intent to infer that but right you are.
Different expats with different situations are effected to various degrees. In my case no noticable change. Actually big improvement for my immigration dealings since they opened office in Roiet city. Saves the long drive to Amnat. Some but no significant change in $ to baht exchange rate. Cost of food up but would have happened no matter the ruling gov anyway.
Those 3 items are the only things I have to worry about. Life is simple.

Visited the new CM immigration dept. this morning, which is now ten minutes drive from my house.

I was home in an hour.

I completely agree that everyone's experience is different.

Mine would have been improved if I'd been applying for a re-entry permit. She was absolutely gorgeous.

It's a mark in your favour that you accept it could simply be your state of mind, chas. Anyone applying deep, head scratching thought to whether or not to stay... well, you're in the wrong place for starters.

Interesting thread- I moved on kinda regret it and kinda don't. My move was for the purely economic with a small side of wanting a new experience. From an economic standpoint Myanmar has delivered more than I thought it would-much more! However, I really do miss living in Thailand- ease of life, good food, nice neighbors, decent internet, decent electricity, good shopping and if I ever needed it, quality healthcare. The politics in Thailand was always something of a mild concern- fretted about it less than a few times a year if that.

Myanmar is a little more concerning- civil wars and ethnic cleansing- something that Thailand does not currently suffer from. Not that it effects me, but it makes me feel a little uncomfortable knowing that these crimes against humanity are being committed on a daily basis.

Day to day life here is something I can endure rather than enjoy as I did in Thailand. Trust me, those trips back to Thailand are what keeps me sane.

    good luck with cambodia, sabang.

people seem to be doing big things with that outward looking, 21st century set-up there.

and are there crickets still for tea?

Im leaving hopefully by the beginning of 2018. Im just over it all. Gonna go back home. Junta is foking dumb and I have a pretty long list of irritants, but the end of the day I'm just incompatible with Thailand long term.

Junta just being one of the final straws I guess.

I leave all the time for work, and its a breath of fresh air when I land in Singapore.

Thailand is a place where time almost stops. The world continually moves forward and nothing happens here. Lose good years if you're not paying attention. I mean FFS SpaceX is re-landing un-manned rockets on a dynamically moving barge but over here theres nothing but what you're gonna have for lunch.

So yeah, planning to fuck this place off, move to FL, buy a new boat & flats fish until I turn lobster red.
the whole place is turning to boring shit, and the world is becoming a better place

I can't believe how many fools are putting up with the local shit, they must be pretty desperate

Thailand was great until 2010, as a safe harbor while the world was shutting down economically

things started to go bad in 2011 with Yingluk and friends, and now since 2014 it's going down fast

a lot of better things to do outside Thailand, and in particular Europe

for those who says that politics doesn't impact their life, I disagree. Being surrounded by stupid people and a stupid government does affect your state of mind and sense of comfort.

Stay here too long and you have to shutdown your brain to stop being annoyed by the locals constant fuckups. Shutdown your brain and you are one of them

Cambo is just another Thailand waiting to happen. Fun in the beginning, but will turn to complete shit eventually. But why not. It's like Thailand 20 years ago, not so bad

Maybe LT could open a successful Pie business there, and not get killed over it

That's good, but I hope your partner keeps up with the Thai language with them. Very important at this age for brain development, plus bi-lingual later is always a good thing.

Hmmm... I left tai-lan around 4 years ago... best decision I have ever made.

Just so you know, this is not going to be a Thailand, bashing rant from me...

Just live where you are happy (or happiest)... I know that's Za-esque, simplified, but it's true..

There are many factors that make one happy, or miserable, depending on your outlook/personality and particular circumstances...

For instance, some traits that might go against forging a happy life in Thailand in my experience are: if you are a sensitive soul, or introspective, or anxious, easy to anger, constantly comparing Thai ways, to the relative sanity of life back home... if you have any financial difficulties, then you won't be happy there (for long)...

However, if you are living off investments (rental returns, etc) from the West, or have a stable income from abroad (retirement income, for example) can avoid the daily grind, annoyances, live in your own happy bubble, then you can be happy there....(or anywhere for that matter)...

So many variables.. I've just listed a few... honestly, the most important point for the vast majority of people (IMO) is having a reliable, trustworthy partner/wife/companion, that makes all the difference in the world... not saying you can't remain single there and be happy (especially if you are fluent in Thai... but the solid, faithful companion thing stands for 95% of guys IMO...

In Thailand, or anywhere really this is true. Keep us from drinking ourselves into the ground and making other foolish decisions on the whole.

I remember some nice Scouse lad arrived in Phuket year ago, and within weeks was with the scabbiest old tattoed skank you could imagine. Weeks after that she'd used his life savings to buy "their" bar, and within months she'd kick him out on the piss every day with enough baht to drink himself into a coma on Chang, presumably so that she could trouser all the profits.

Never did see what happened to him but I'd think it didn't end well.
