A Washington state man was killed when he shot himself in the face with his .45-calibre handgun while taking selfies.
The 43-year-old man and his girlfriend were photographing themselves with the weapon at a residence in the town of Concrete on Sunday when he shot himself, confirmed an official at the Skagit County Sheriff's Office.
"Both of them had been taking pictures throughout the day. He'd been kind of modeling with the gun, pointing it towards himself on occasion, always loading it and unloading it," said Patrol Chief Chad Clark.
"What we determined so far, is that during this last go-round, he didn't realize that he had one in the chamber when he pulled the trigger ... and it went off."
The distraught girlfriend ran over to the neighbours, who called police, but by the time officers arrived the man was dead.
The death is being investigated as accidental, and there was no indication drugs or alcohol may have played a role, said Clark. The man's name has not been released.
'Lessons to be learned? Treat all guns as if they are loaded. Never point your gun at anything you are not willing to destroy. These are all firearms safety rules and it appears at this point that those were violated," said Clark.

In the UK Nanny state, if a chemical supplier supplies chemicals to someone they cannot reasonably expect to have the skills necessary handle them safely.... they can be held liable to the resulting mayhem... even if its self inflicted darwin award stuff.
perhaps they should introduce this aspect of 'taking personal responsibility' to gun shops when they take the personal decision to sell a gun to a complete air head like this. as good a s pulled the trigger themselves.

Pro-gun activist shot in the back by her four-year-old son
A PRO-GUN activist has been shot in the back by her four-year-old son a day after boasting about the tot’s shooting skills.
Jamie Gilt, 31, was driving in the US state of Florida on Tuesday when her son found her loaded .45 semiautomatic handgun on the floor of the pick-up truck and accidentally fired it.
The bullet ploughed through the driver’s seat and into Gilt’s back, Jacksonville.com reported. The boy, who was sitting in the back seat, was unharmed

If she had a gun in the front of the pick-up it would have prevented this senseless tragedy.
If the kid had his own gun, he wouldn't have fukked with hers.Originally Posted by AntRobertson
Good point, well made.
She should probably sue the manufacturer of the pick-up. No front/rear gun holsters-slash-safety features.
She was driving a pick-up, FFS.
Any self respecting pick-up has a gun rack in the back window.
But obviously seats not bullet proof , I feel that somebody is about to get sued.
But the mother lives on. Presumably she will now give her child extra intensive target practice.
Five dead as gunmen open fire on party. Three others injured when two gunmen ambushed a party in a backyard near Pittsburgh. Investigation underway.
Shots were initially fired from an alley behind the property in Franklin Avenue shortly before 11pm. When the partygoers tried to run back into the house, more shots were fired from the side. Three women and a man were dead when police arrived on the scene, and a fourth woman died on the way to the hospital.
^ It'll go down as accidental discharge...which his Dad was probably accused of not long before the boy came into existence.

Three women and a man died at the scene while another woman died in hospital, Allegheny County Police said in a statement.
It added two men were in a critical condition.
Officers found two different weapons at the scene and described how partgoers desperately sought cover while shots rained into the garden from an alleyway.
Now police say crime scene investigators have established that "at least" two gunmen were behind the horror killings.
A police spokesman said: "Partygoers appeared to try to run into the residence, at which point a person on the side or backyard adjacent to the residence fired at the back porch."
The attack in Wilkinsburg, a borough of about 15,000 chiefly lower and middle income residents, is the latest in a series of mass shootings that have highlighted gun control as an issue in the US presidential elections.
Dozens of shell casings littered the pavement of an alleyway near the site, where police were gathering evidence and talking to witnesses, local media reported.
Witness, Kayla Alexandra, told news station WPX: "I heard at least 20 shots."
Police added that four people were declared dead at the scene with four more victims taken to nearby hospitals.
One later died from her wounds, leaving two men in critical condition and a woman in stable condition.
Lt Andrew Schurman, of the Allegheny County Police department who is leading the hunt for the gunmen, said: "There is ballistic evidence to lead us to believe there are at least two people who have discahrged weapons into a backyard party or cookout of some sort.
"We do not believe that anyone attending the party fired weapons in return."

A 39-year-old Milwaukee man has been charged with three counts of homicide for tracking down and shooting three neighbors after confronting one over the fact that he didn’t speak English, the Journal-Sentinel reports.
According to police, Dan J. Popp shot and killed Jesus R. Manso-Perez, 40; Phia Vue, 36; and Mai K. Vue, 32 after first trying to lure Manso-Perez to his place with an offer of beer.
According to police officials, Popp stopped Manso-Perez and his son as they walked by his apartment on the way to the laundry room. After refusing the offer of beer, Popp asked where they were from and, upon learning they came from Puerto Rico, replied, “Oh, that’s why you don’t speak English. You’re Puerto Rican.”
According to Manso-Perez’s son, they were returning to their own apartment when they encountered Popp on the stairs landing pointing a rifle at them.
“You guys got to go,” Popp reportedly said before shooting Mans-Perez in the head and then firing at — and missing — his son.
Police state that Popp then proceeded to the Vue’s apartment where he kicked down the door and shot Phia and Mai Vue as they huddled with their four children.
Responding police officers were directed to the apartment by several of the children who escaped, and Popp surrendered to police after dropping his weapon when ordered to so.
According to police, two weapons were recovered and that Popp does not have a previous criminal record. Police state that a medical emergency call was received from Popp’s residence the day before the triple murder, but provided no further details.
Popp remains in Milwaukee County Jail and is slated for a mental competency examine to see if he understands the charges and can aid in his own defense.

On Thursday afternoon, Mai Vue's co-worker, Elena Yrlas, placed a bouquet on the front step of the apartment building.
Yrlas met Mai Vue about four years ago while they worked at Kohl's corporate offices in Menomonee Falls. After Yrlas retired, they kept in touch, and the two had tea together just last week at the Lakefront Colectivo.
"She loved her son and her three daughters," Yrlas said. "She believed in high education. She and her husband wanted to better their lives."
