American Police Kill 3 People per Day, over 1000 so Far in 2015

The Guardian’s effort to track fatal shootings by American police, known as ‘The Counted,’ reached the 1000 mark this week. With an average of more than three Americans shot and killed by police per day, this shocking statistic should be a wake-up call to the gun-toting vigilante justice that’s being trained into United States police forces.

In a country where its citizens are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, the nation’s police force operates as the judge, jury, and executioner at least three times a day by taking the lives of citizens without significant accountability for their actions.

The United States government and U.S. citizens have never before had a comprehensive record of the number of people killed by law enforcement. Former U.S. attorney general, Eric Holder described the absence of a National data collection system to track fatal police shootings as “unacceptable.”

Until journalists began tracking fatal police shootings this year, the only way that information was collected was by a ‘voluntary’ program run by the FBI through which law enforcement agencies may or may not choose to submit their annual count of “justifiable homicides,” which it defines as “the killing of a felon in the line of duty.”

Between 2005 and 2012 just 1,100 of America’s 18,000 police agencies chose to voluntarily report a “justifiable homicide” to the FBI.

For comparison, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 35 Police Officers have died on the job in firearm-related incidents in 2015.

Saudi Arabia, known worldwide for its public beheadings, executed only 90 people in the entire year of 2014 according to reports by Amnesty International, when an average of over 90 people are killed by American police forces every 30 days.

To further put the scale of this crisis into perspective, as the world rushes to war over the tragic deaths of 129 people killed earlier this week in Paris, United States police forces kill that many American citizens about every 40 days.

The crisis is clear. The United States trains its police officers to act as public executioners with a laundry list of worn out excuses and aggressive police unions at the ready to battle any public backlash and assist Officers with avoiding accountability for their actions.

A complete dismantling and total reconstruction of current policing systems seem the only available answer.

Things like education level, military experience and branch, training received as well as knowing whether they're city, county or state cops. Off the top of my head I'm guessing most of the cops we hear about in the news are city cops where my guess is the education level is the lowest.

I kinda have some sympathy for the cops: it's a pretty shit, stressful, and largely thankless occupation so it's no great surprise they have to recruit relatively low-hanging fruit. It's just not the kind of job that would attract many more educated people.

As to the shootings that also understandable to an extent. Whilst I've no doubt there are plenty of fully justifiable shootings along with some that basically amount to murder, my bet would be that the majority are due to cops being stressed and scared. They have to assume for their own safety that anyone they approach at any time and for any reason could be carrying a gun.

It's s viscous circle that - given the numbers - is obviously spiraling all the more out of control.

People are getting shot by toddlers on a weekly basis this year

This week a 2-year-old in South Carolina found a gun in the back seat of the car he was riding in and accidentally shot his grandmother, who was sitting in the passenger seat. This type of thing happens from time to time: A little kid finds a gun, fires it, and hurts or kills himself or someone else. These cases rarely bubble up to the national level except when someone, like a parent, ends up dead.

But cases like this happen a lot more frequently than you might think. After spending a few hours sifting through news reports, I've found at least 43 instances this year of somebody being shot by a toddler 3 or younger. In 31 of those 43 cases, a toddler found a gun and shot himself or herself.

Notably, these numbers don't include cases where toddlers are shot, intentionally or otherwise, by older children or adults. Dozens of preschoolers are killed in acts of homicide each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But I haven't included those figures here.

No charges issued for sergeant who shot and killed 17-year-old, WLNS reports

ROXAND TWP., MI – No charges will be filed against an sergeant with the Eaton County Sheriff's Department who shot and killed a 17-year-old boy in February.

Eaton County Prosecutor Doug Lloyd released his decision in the case during a news conference June 16 after reviewing an investigation conducted by Michigan State Police, according to a report from our media partners at WLNS.

Lloyd played video captured from Sgt. Jonathan Frost's body camera alongside video captured by 17-year-old Deven Guilford of the altercation during the news conference.

Police previously said Guilford was killed during a traffic stop on Feb. 28 on M-43 west of Cochran during a traffic stop on Feb. 28 on M-43 west of Cochran Road. During the news conference, Lloyd said Frost attempted to arrest Guilford, who was of Mulliken Township, after he refused to give the officer his driver's license, according to the report.

"Lloyd said at that point, Guilford and the sergeant began fighting and an attempt to tase Guilford was unsuccessful," the report stated. "During the fight, the Taser was lost in the snow. Lloyd explained that the sergeant drew his weapon, put it against Guilford's chest and pulled the trigger. The gun jammed. When the sergeant pulled the trigger again the gun unjammed and seven shots were fired."

Lloyd said Guilford was struck by all seven shots.

Police said Guilford died at the scene and the sergeant, who was injured in the altercation, was transported to Sparrow Hospital, in Lansing, for treatment.

Frost had been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation into the incident was completed and reviewed by the prosecutor's office.

Frost had worked for the sheriff's department for eight years prior to the shooting, according to previous statements by police.
