Last year marked a record-high for gun-related deaths in the U.S. in nearly four decades, according to new data released from Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention's WONDER database.
Nearly 40,000 people were killed by guns last year, according to the data.
The 39,773 recorded deaths from firearms marked an increase of more than 10,000 compared to the 28,874 deaths recorded in 1999.
When adjusted for age fluctuations, the estimate represents a total of 12 deaths per 100,000 people — a jump from 10.3 deaths per 100,000 people in 1999.
CDC statisticians told CNN that gun deaths have reached a record-high going back to at least 1979, when firearm deaths started to be coded
in mortality data.
An estimated 14,542 people are killed in homicides with guns, according to the CDC.
Last year had previously been deemed the deadliest for mass shootings, following massacres such as the Las Vegas concert shooting and the Sutherland Springs church shooting in Texas.
The steady rise of gun-related suicides also contributed to the record number. An estimated 23,854 people died from suicide using guns in 2017, compared to the 17,352 suicides by firearm recorded in 2007.
The age-adjusted suicide rate by firearm was highest among white men in 2017 at 14 per 100,000 people.
Homicide deaths by firearm affected black men the most, with an age-adjusted rate at 33 deaths per 100,000 people in 2017.
The CDC study also calculated that 486 gun deaths were unintentional, 338 were undetermined and 553 contributed to legal intervention and operations of war.
Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), who was nearly killed during a shooting in 2011, reacted to the CDC report through her gun control organization.
“This data from the CDC reminds us how many lives our gun violence crisis alters every year – and why so many Americans are rising up to demand action,” Giffords said in a statement.
“It’s unacceptable that the number of deaths from shootings keeps escalating while Washington DC refuses to even debate policies we know would help save lives. But activism leads to change and come January, more gun safety champions will be joining Congress and making this public health problem a priority,” she added.
The National Rifle Association (NRA), the country's largest gun rights group, said on Twitter that gun control laws are not the answer to preventing gun deaths.
"If we want to prevent more horrific acts of violence our leaders need to stop demonizing the men and women of the @NRA and find solutions that will save lives," the organization wrote Wednesday.

Over One Million Gun Owners Refuse to Obey Ban, No One Turning in Magazines
https://thefreethoughtproject.com/gu...e-to-obey-ban/
"Residents of New Jersey were given a deadline to turn in their gun magazines or become felons overnight, and so far, no one is complying."
^What was the point of the ban then?
Laws laws laws...without enforcement none of them matter.“New Jersey’s law reasonably fits the State’s interest in public safety and does not unconstitutionally burden the Second Amendment’s right to self-defense in the home,” the court wrote in their decision. “The law also does not violate the Fifth Amendment’s Takings Clause because it does not require gun owners to surrender their magazines but instead allows them to retain modified magazines or register firearms that have magazines that cannot be modified.”
AG Gurbir Grewal applauded the ruling on Twitter stating: “This just in: for months, individuals have been challenging NJ’s limits on large capacity magazines—a sensible law to address mass shootings. Today, the court of appeals upheld the law. Big win for public safety and law enforcement safety!”

Gunshot that killed Marine at Southeast DC barracks was not self-inflicted, officials say
WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) - The gunshot wound that led to the death of a U.S. Marine at a barracks in Southeast D.C. was not self inflicted, according to an official.
The shooting was reported around 5 a.m. Officials say the Marine was shot and hospitalized but later died from a gunshot wound.
Officials declined to elaborate, citing the ongoing investigation.
A D.C. police source told FOX 5's Evan Lambert that the incident was an accident, and that it happened during a shift change when weapons are supposed to be unloaded before being passed to the next shift.

DC sees more gun violence, deadlier shootings in 2018
WASHINGTON — In D.C., 160 people died by homicide in 2018, up from 116 in 2017 — a spike of about 40 percent.
In all, of the 534 people shot by another person in D.C. through mid-December, 23 percent ultimately died, according to statistics compiled by The Washington Post. That includes 12 deaths from previous years that police only recently deemed as homicides.
City officials say more gun violence has contributed to the rising number of murders, and D.C. saw one of the biggest increases in fatal shootings nationwide while most other major cities reported overall decreases.
Petty disputes between people who know each other and who have guns are at the root of the killings, the Post reports.
While homicides soared in D.C., deaths from shootings were down in other parts of the region.
In Montgomery County, Maryland, homicides decreased from 21 in 2017 to 19 in 2018, while in Fairfax County, Virginia, fatal shootings fell from 18 to 13 across the past two years.
Maryland’s Prince George’s County saw one of the most significant annual drops, going from 80 homicides in 2017 to 60 last year. In the Arlington, Virginia, homicides went from four to just three in 2018.
“When you look at our known homicide offenders in the city, about 40 percent of those have a prior gun arrest,” D.C. police chief Peter Newsham said. “At all levels of the criminal justice system, we have to do better.”

What!? You mean the strict gun laws there didn't prevent a deadlier 2018? I'm shocked.
fragging by gun?
^ green owed.
Seriously though folks. Might as well let Murkins have as many guns as they like. Remove them, they would still kill each other but simply find different ways to do it. Chemical food and a constant supply of symptom fixing symptom fighting medication and a bible fixation has resulted in a disturbed country always on the precipice of killing each other.
More guns. Especially in Seattle.
I guess you and others think an Aussie style solution would work here...and I personally don't think it would. This country has glorified guns and outlaws for almost its entire existence, an OZ style ban won't end that.
Plus Oz is an island nation which probably helped make the ban work there. Would a Trump wall stop the gun trafficking that would spring up were an Oz style ban enacted here? Not to mention that observance and enforcement in the US would most likely be just as lax as it is for the gun laws already in place.
Its still my opinion that focusing on the ammo would be simpler and more effective.
