Police have detained Russia’s opposition leader Alexei Navalny at a demonstration against Vladimir Putin in central Moscow.
Thousands of demonstrators denouncing the Russian president’s imminent inauguration for a fourth term on 7 May gathered on Saturday in the capital’s Pushkin Square.
Video showed police carrying a struggling Navalny, who is Putin’s most prominent opponent, out of the square by the arms and legs.
The unauthorised protest was part of nationwide demonstrations called by Navalny under the slogan “He is not our tsar”.
Police also made arrests at demonstrations in other cities, but no overall figure was immediately available.About 150 people were detained in Krasnoyarsk, in eastern Siberia and 75 in Yakutsk, the capital of a diamond-mining region in north-east Russia.
