Sure, just as the Abu-Graib inmates were so sad when they were released, and GITMO is, as we know, a 5 star hotel compared to any surroundings captives of 'Arabs' or 'Muslims' find themselves in. Oh, I just remember, Iranians aren't "Arabs", but never mind, eh, it's only one letter difference between the 2 countries.

    Mad_Dog has a point, here.

Wether the Iranians being held by the U.S. are diplomats or not is being disagreed upon, and I surely don't know.

But these Iranians being held are likely why the Brits are being held, although the official Iranian line is that there is no relationship.

    Make sense, though.

The US can learn from this example of mutual respect

The outcome of the crisis between Iran and Britain provides a lesson on how to deal with the wider international standoff

    Abbas Edalat in Tehran
    Thursday April 5, 2007
    The Guardian

The unexpectedly early resolution to the dispute between the UK and Iran over the detention of 15 sailors and marines in the Gulf is the direct result of Iran's goodwill and a U-turn by the British government. After initially using threatening language and seeking to add an unnecessary international dimension to the dispute, it eventually opted for direct negotiations with Iran based on mutual respect. This outcome offers a compelling lesson on how to deal with the wider international standoff between the US and Iran.

President Ahmadinejad may have chided the British government at yesterday's press conference for not being brave enough to admit that it had made a mistake by crossing into Iranian waters, but his mood was generous. His "gift to the British people" was with immediate effect, and he asked for no apology or other concessions.

But what was the impediment to immediate recourse to bilateral diplomacy, which could have achieved an agreement soon after the arrest? In 2004, a similar incursion involving British service personnel in Iranian territorial waters was resolved in a matter of days, with guarantees that such incursion would not occur in future.

Tehran has certainly sought similar assurances over the past 13 days, which is reasonable given the long history of British imperial domination in Iran in the 19th century, the US/UK-incited coup of 1953 which overthrew the popular government of Dr Mosaddeq, and the UK's support for Saddam's regime in its eight-year war against Iran, including provision of chemical weapons. Against this background is the current wider context where, in violation of the UN charter, Iran is threatened by the US, UK and Israeli leaders, who regularly assert that "the military option" is on the table.

I agree. Blair said something gay like "our arguement isn't with the Iraninain people" He should have shown a bit of honour and at least acknowledged the good grace of the Iranians in releasing the prisoners. Blair better hurry up he has only got 3 months to resolve the Israel/Palestine issue like he said he would last October in his fair well speach to the Labour Party Confrence.

Ahmadinejad advises U.S.: If you don’t accept the Prophets of which the last is Muhammad, then your fate “is none but death, and downfall for yourselves, and wretched lives for your nations.”

Well, as the old saying goes, Ahmadinewhackjob can take his advice and stick it where the sun don't shine...

Well, John McCain is one candidate with a set:

"Sen. John McCain brought his "Straight Talk" tour to South Carolina Wednesday morning.

The presidential hopeful spent 90 minutes talking to nearly 500 people who crammed into the Murrells Inlet VFW Hall.

At the campaign rally, McCain was asked if an attack on Iran is in the works, the GEORGETOWN TIMES reports.

McCain began his answer by changing the words to a popular BEACH BOYS song.

“Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran,” he sang to the tune of Barbara Ann."

    (m. jagger/k. richards)

I was driving home early sunday morning through bakersfield
Listening to gospel music on the colored radio station
And the preacher said, you know you always have the
    Lord by your side

And I was so pleased to be informed of this that I ran
Twenty red lights in his honor
Thank you jesus, thank you lord

I had an arrangement to meet a girl, and I was kind of late
And I thought by the time I got there shed be off
Shed be off with the nearest truck driver she could find
Much to my surprise, there she was sittin in the corner
A little bleary, worse for wear and tear
Was a girl with far away eyes

So if youre down on your luck
    And you cant harmonize
Find a girl with far away
    And if youre downright disgusted
And life aint worth a dime
Get a girl with far away eyes

Well the preacher kept right on saying that all I had to do was send
Ten dollars to the church of the sacred bleeding heart of jesus
Located somewhere in los angeles, california
And next week theyd say my prayer on the radio
And all my dreams would come true
So I did, the next week, I got a prayer with a girl
Well, you know what kind of eyes she got

So if youre down on your luck
    I know you all sympathize
Find a girl with far away eyes
    And if youre downright disgusted
And life aint worth a dime
Get a girl with far away eyes

McCain has really slipped in many ways.

I think he's know this perhaps, and therefore is a little more blunt and weird.

I wasn't sure where to put this article so I did a search. Lots of threads related to the "Iranian Issue."

Is the article below credible? Hard to say. I suppose we'll wait and see.

Dutch intel: US to strike Iran in coming weeks

The Dutch intelligence service, the AIVD, has called off an operation aimed at infiltrating and sabotaging Iran's weapons industry due to an assessment that a US attack on the Islamic Republic's nuclear program is imminent, according to a report in the country's De Telegraaf newspaper on Friday.

Actually it could swing it either way.

On one hand folks in the US have had enough of the fighting, and opening up another front might be enough to push them over the edge and run screaming from the republicans.

On the other hand the republicans tend to fair much better when folks are worried about security issues, and bitch slapping Iran might get them concerned about how Iran and the ME in general will react. Thus getting them worried about US security issues and getting them to lean towards McCain if they think he would handle that side of things better than Obama.

Sarkozy warns Iran over risk of Israeli attack

    By Andrew England in Damascus
    Published: September 5 2008 03:00 | Last updated: September 5 2008 03:00

Nicolas Sarkozy, France's president, warned Iran yesterday it was taking a big risk by seeking to obtain a military nuclear capability, saying that one day it could find Israel had decided to attack.
In one of the most explicit warnings to Tehran by a western leader, Mr Sarkozy said: "One day, whatever the Israeli government, we could find one morning that Israel has struck.
"The question is not whether it would be legitimate, whether it would be intelligent. What will we do at that moment? It would be a catastrophe. We must avoid that catastrophe."
Iran insists it is pursuing a civilian programme but western powers suspect it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons.
Israel has not ruled out military action against Iran if the crisis over its nuclear programme is not resolved, and in June tension in-creased with further military exercises by the Jewish state. Israel is the only Middle Eastern state thought to possess a military nuclear capability, although it does not publicly acknowledge the fact.
Mr Sarkozy was speaking at a summit in Damascus with Bashar al-Assad, his Syrian counterpart, and the leaders of Turkey and Qatar. Syria is an ally of Iran and Mr Sarkozy has asked Mr Assad to help to resolve the stand-off between Iran and the west. "The United States knows the role Syria can play," Mr Sarkozy said. "Syria can play a major role on this issue."
The summit marked a coup for Mr Assad as Syria is gradually welcomed back into the international fold. But Washington still treats the Arab state as a pariah. Observers also doubt the extent of influence Syria has with Iran, and relations between Damascus and Tehran have suffered following Syria's decision to enter indirect peace talks with Israel, diplomats say.
Mr Assad said Damascus had submitted proposals to Turkish mediators that could form the basis for Syria's first direct negotiations with Israel for eight years. A fifth round of indirect talks between the two nations had been postponed, he said, following the resignation of an Israeli negotiator in the wake of the decision by Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, to step down later this month.
Turkey said those talks would resume this month. But any direct negotiations would not take place until after US elections and once Mr Olmert's successor had been chosen.
Damascus appears to be banking on the US elections leading to a policy shift in Washington. But critics of the Syrian regime will argue they need to see real action rather than rhetoric before being convinced Damascus is serious about the talks.
Mr Sarkozy also used the trip to boost economic ties, and the French energy group Total announced that it reached three deals with Syria, including extending its licence on the Deir Ez Zor gas field by 10 years.

If any therapy is needed it'll be the Israelis that do it, not the US.

Milky, the way things are with the loony left nowadays, if the planet were threatened the US would be castigated for placing its military and resources at the front end...which btw they would do not only because they're the most advanced but also because they're used to making sacrifices for ungrateful cnuts.

So much bitching about the US and UK, though people from the world over daily risk their lives to enter these lands of opportunity. Maybe they're all misguided, eh?
