As progressive as Germany is I would have thought they would have been at the forefront of the march for equality. Hopefully now (although late) they will influence other countries to choose equality who have yet to join the ranks.
#23 (should be #24 because of Taiwan) - The German parliament just voted to legalize same sex marriage

What is not so apparent is the reason behind Mutty Merkel's intransigence. She was a product of the old East Germany remember and her father was a fairly strict preacher, (Lutherian?). She also has a habit of spending a long time debating finer points of detail with herself, before reaching a decision. Many see this as her being slow and plodding, but it's actually a beneficial female trait that has served her and her country well.
She's not perfect, as her flawed immigration policy shows, but it's much better than testosterone driven male leadership, which ends in constant and pointless wars.

...so, sexist generalizations then: revealing yet another character fault...
Many feminine traits are positive. Some male traits are not, especially when it comes to the leadership of a nation. Is there another reason for the rise of women in influential positions in industry, commerce and government, or is that the 'character fault' you are referring to?Originally Posted by tomcat

“It occurs to me that Merkel is feeling increasingly exposed because she certainly wants to align herself with a progressive E.U. culture and tradition, and she’s in some ways the leader of that now,” Beachy said. “It made the absence of same-sex marriage in Germany that much more glaring.”
By the way, not everyone was happy with her and the delay.
Malta to legalise gay marriage and ban gendered words in legislation
Words including 'husband' and 'wife' will be scrapped from country's laws in bid to make legislation gender-neutral
Malta is on the verge of legalising gay marriage after the government brought forward legislation to scrap gendered references to marriage in the country’s legal system.
The draft law, which has received the backing of the centre-right opposition Nationalist Party, will abolish gendered terms such as “husband”, “wife”, “mother” and “father” from the country’s Marriage Act and other laws and replace them with gender-neutral terminology.
It will also be made legal for gay couples to adopt children.
It marks the latest in a series of reforms designed to increase equality in the traditionally Catholic country.
Last year, Malta became the first nation to ban so-called “gay cure” conversion therapy, making it illegal to try to “change, repress or eliminate a person's sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression”.
"Malta wants to keep leading on LGBT issues and civil liberties, to serve as a model for the rest of the world," Maltese prime minister Joseph Muscat, who leads the Labour Party, told the BBC.
Should the proposed changes be passed by its parliament, Malta will become the 13th EU state to legalise gay marriage.

What if I want to become gay to take advantage of the more promiscuous lifestyle with more partners? Should I not be allowed to pursue that desire through whatever means available including hormone treatment or whatever? I am a grown adult so why can I not do this?Originally Posted by S Landreth
Removing gender based wording will not stop the offending words being used. Nor will it eradicate their place in the dictionary, or their meaning.
Another example of futility in gender issues.
No matter how far the zealots go, it will never be enough for the protagonists.

Wednesday – Malta will be added to the map?
Marriage Equality Bill advances to final parliamentary reading
VALETTA, Malta - The island of Malta is on its way to becoming the latest country to embrace same-sex "marriage."
A legalization measure, the Marriage Equality Bill, has passed to initial readings before Parliament. It is widely expected to pass a final vote on Wednesday.
Designed to "modernize the institution of marriage," the bill is not a single act, but a series of amendments to existing laws such as the Marriage Act, the Criminal Code and the Civil Code.
In 2016, Malta became the first country in Europe to outlaw conversion therapy — any treatment aiming to "change, repress or eliminate a person's sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression."

Same-sex marriage bill clears German upper house
Germany's equal marriage bill has been approved in the Bundesrat, meaning the president can now sign it into law. However, one other legal challenge - concerned with the wording of Germany's constitution - is likely.
A vote was not necessary in the upper house of Germany's parliament, the Bundesrat, on Friday, because no state challenged the draft legislation. The original proposal for the law - and a large part of the initial pressure on Angela Merkel's government to act - had come from the Bundesrat, where "marriage for all" ("Ehe für alle") twice won majority support.
The state premier of Rhineland Palatinate, Social Democrat Malu Dreyer, said she was happy "that our persistent fight has succeeded." Rhineland Palatinate was the state to bring the proposal to a vote twice in the Bundesrat, in 2013 and 2015.
