Western and Arab countries have responded with outrage after Russia and China vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that would have backed an Arab plan urging Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to give up power.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called the veto a "travesty". The vote came a day after activists say Syrian forces bombarded a district of Homs, killing more than 200 people in the worst night of bloodshed of the 11-month uprising.

Russia said the resolution was biased and would have meant taking sides in a civil war. Syria is Moscow's rare ally in the Middle East, home to a Russian naval base and a customer for its arms. China's veto was widely seen as following Russia's lead.

Sky correspondent live from Syria: Shelling started in Homs in the early morning and carried on for 5 hours. Aleppo also under heavy fire.

Assad has been given a green light by the Chinese and the Russians, and he's trying to wipe out opposition strongholds.

    That's about it.
If that doesn't work, then China and Russia will back the opposition.

Judging by the burning Russian and Chinese flags, I think they've blown it.

I'd be surprised if there can be a negotiated settlement now; even if Assad leaves, the people will want the government out, and they won't budge.

Civil war or and/or military intervention looks to be a cert.

Trouble is, whoever intervenes, it will escalate around the Gulf.

Now you can see your oil price going up $160+.

"China does not have its own selfish interest on the issue of Syria. We don't shelter anyone. We uphold justice on the Syrian issue."
yes mate, we know your views on people asking for democratic rights. We saw them at Tiananmen Square in 1989.

Lots of parallels to last March:

Following 4 June, the government conducted widespread arrests of protesters and their supporters, cracked down on other protests around China, banned the foreign press from the country and strictly controlled coverage of the events in the domestic press
Perhaps China gave Assad their "how to deal with protests" manual.

Harry/B, your surmization in post #331 makes sense.

The situation in Syria looks increasingly likely to escalate into full on civil war which will undeniably domino around the ME.
The price of oil will go up, profiting both Iran and China.

If the UN had taken time to accommodate all views there would have been a consensus. It didn't, it forced some countries who were unwilling to trust other countries motive, for good reasons.

If you review the draft resolution, see post 300, and compare it with the actual resolution voted upon at the weekend see:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worl...na-vetoed.html you will see some modifications.

What was missing and would have probably assisted some countries in voting for the resolution was:

    1. The recognition that the terrorist forces equally pull back and stop fighting,
    2. The recognition any further conflicts caused by the terrorists to be condemned,
    3. That the terrorist forces allow full and unimpeded access to any area
    4. The recognition that the UN is the focus for all actions and not the Arab League declaration
    5. The recognition that the Arab league mission has actually achieved some headway and should be continued.
    6. The recognition that if the "demand" that the government of Syria pulls all it's forces "back to their home bases" there will be nobody to "guarantee the safety" of the Arab league mission as well as UN.
    7. The recognition that the demand that the government of Syria "allow safe and unhindered access for humanitarian assistance in order to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to persons in need of assistance" was exactly the weasel words which the crusader coalition utilised to start the invasion of Libya.
    8. That the crusader coalition forces amassed around Syria's borders also return to their home bases, and take the trainers, mercenaries, arms and money with them.
    9. That the arming, training and assistance to terrorists forces be condemned by the members of the UNSC

If you wish to review the Arab League Mission Report and see the progress that was being made, it is available here:

UNO has degenerated into a bunch of codswallop.

This is a result of USA undermining of UNO.

USA wanted to be boss, as USA could not handle equality for all people.

Hilarious. Thanks to Anonymous we now know Assad was coached on what to say in his now infamous Barbara Walters bullshit, er sorry I mean interview.

The last two paragraphs can only increase support for Clinton from her countrymen.

I hope that's enough, otherwise I'll have to post it in the News forum.

Bashar Assad emails leaked, tips for ABC interview revealed In memorable interview Assad tells Walters 'We don't kill our people ... no government in the world kills its people, unless it's led by a crazy person.'

By Barak Ravid Tags: Bashar Assad Syria Arab Spring

Hundreds of emails from Syrian President Bashar Assad's office were leaked on Monday after an attack by the hacker group Anonymous. One of the email files, which Haaretz has obtained, was a document preparing Assad for his December 2011 interview with ABC's Barbara Walters.

The target of the attack was the mail server of the Syrian Ministry of Presidential Affairs. Among those whose email was exposed were the Minister of Presidential Affairs Mansour Fadlallah Azzam and Assad's media adviser, Bouthaina Shaaban.

Assad's TV interview with Walters was memorable for his repeated denials that Syrian citizens were being killed. "We don't kill our people ... no government in the world kills its people, unless it's led by a crazy person," Assad told Walters.

About 10 days before the interview, Sheherazad Jaafari - a press attache at the Syrian mission to the United Nations - sent a long email to former Al Jazeera journalist Luna Chebel, who now works in Assad's bureau. She also sent the email to an aide of Shaaban's. Jaafari, who was involved in arranging the interview with Walters, also happens to be the daughter of the Syrian ambassador to the UN, Dr. Bashar Jaafari.

Jaafari Jr. wrote: "The major points and dimensions that have been mentioned a lot in the American media are: The idea of violence has been one of the major subjects brought up in every article. They use the phrases 'The Syrian government is killing its own people,' 'Tanks have been used in many cities,' 'Airplanes have been used to suppress the peaceful demonstrations,' and 'Security forces are criminals and bloody.'"

She advised: "It is hugely important and worth mentioning that 'mistakes' have been done in the beginning of the crises because we did not have a well-organized 'police force.' American psyche can be easily manipulated when they hear that there are 'mistakes' done and now we are 'fixing it.' It's worth mentioning also what is happening now in Wall Street and the way the demonstrations are been suppressed by policemen, police dogs and beatings."

Jaafari also recommended that Assad say: "Syria doesn't have a policy to torture people, unlike the USA, where there are courses and schools that specialize in teaching policemen and officers how to torture."
