I rather think Thomas visits these artsy fartsy restaurants more for the ambience and company of likeminded members of the LGBT community.

He'd probably get set upon sat at a roadside stall playing footsy.

Savoury crepes have never really appealed to me since the Findus crispy pancake horsemeat scandal.

...following your methodology, I will first comment negatively on the hygiene, the service, the quality of food and the filthy apron of the head cook...without having visited the place...payback's a bitch......

there's nothing wrong with those places, if all you want is a decent enough plate served in clean air-conditioned surroundings and you dont mind the price, but to elevate them to "haute cuisine" status is certainly pretentious.

they are just fast food joints for people too proud to eat at macD or pizza hut.

some of them are good: coffee beans by dao, for example.

happy to pay higher prices for consistently delicious thai/western food.

still like a bigmac on occasion, though.

i've eaten in lots of those joints over the years, although to be fair, i have never eaten at the creperie.

for a quick top up out of the heat or rain they are fine and visitors to thailand just love them, they are clean and convenient and not as intimidating as either full on local tin table thai pochanas or street stalls.

considering the exorbitant rents they pay at the paragon etc. and the cost of fitting out a restaurant there, the food cannot be anything other than overpriced.

as for the atmosphere and the taste, well that depends on the individual. i find the atmosphere false and the taste of dishes in mall restaurants mostly uninspiring and ordinary.

tax, for those who live in bangkok, there used to be quite a few good restaurants in shophouses at cheap prices.

they're harder to come by these days.

so, what are you suggesting for those who live in the sukhumvit area, tax? (genuine question)

Bloody 'ell. I was just reading online that the previously excellent Sabai Jai Gai Yang at Ekkamai is now under Japanese ownership with dishes adapted to suit the Japanese palate.

Now that was a cracking restaurant close to Sukhumvit with very reasonable prices.

La Crepe or in auld toungue of Languedoc was invented in the town of Condom near car Whores during the sheep's bladder crisis during the Carlist rebellion of Boniface the Madamegarcon (aka ) ladyboy.

The gent would have his handmaid or very odd job boy master of the gong stroke chatelaine wrap the object around his pretuberence until congress complete. The discarded crepes were highly prized by French cumgurglers and all belgians ever since, the Bretons dispay them but only sell to tourists as a long standing joke

Since reading this tale in the Wickedpedia I have never swallowed

when in bkk, we stay at the wifes family place in the sukhumvit area. if the wife isnt cooking then .....

breakfast. i buy fruit from the fruit seller on the soi. 40 or 50 baht for fruit that i eat with yoghurt and bread from foodland or villa.

lunch. there are loads of small thai shophouse restaurants on the soi, i have my favourite places and buy take away curries over rice or noodles for 70 or 80 baht, they know me now and know how to flavour for my liking.

there is a terrific muslim restaurant ( called usman) down the alley just past the huge queens park hotel, its a marriot now, that serves thai and muslim food for 100-150 baht a plate. the place is spotlessly clean, airconnned and the food is great.

sometimes i go to the food court at mquartier, there's a good vegetarian place there, again curry over rice is 70 or 80b. theres a southern thai food shophouse on thong lor, about half a mile in, left hand side, that we use a lot too. 120-160 a plate. neither of us drink alcohol so the bills are correspondingly lower for our meals

the missus and her family knows dozens of thai and japanese restaurants, usually miles away from sukhumvit though.

if i'm out solo, i like the "no idea" on sukhumvit 22, the pizza place by the entrance to the skytrain near terminal 21, or the robin hood for a pie and chips.

ive heard good reports about the steakhouses opposite soi 22, but ive never tried them. i love a good steak, but the prices in thailand are just ridiculous.

we occasionally have hotel buffets, i like the sunday one at the landmark, a wide variety of thai and international foods and if you have an appetite, then its excellent value.

rarely if ever eat at the malls these days, and as ive made quite clear, i consider them overpriced and poor value and they tend to cater more to the facebook instagram look-at-me set more than hungry souls just wanting a plateful of decent no frills grub at a fair price.

I have enough experiences with those "fake" hiso restaurant at Paragon, that with the pictures alone from tomcat, I can tell how they taste exactly

they have to make up for it with the tacky and silly decoration, because the visual appetite will actually boost the taste of those "average" dish

not saying the whole experience is not enjoyable, because I am sure it was, and for tea time, this is definitely the kind of place you want to go to chill,

just before heading for the whores in Nana

to be fair to Tomcat, the whole deal is not too bad, 1800 with wine and all those dishes for 2, it's actually cheap, and she probably enjoyed the whole experience with her husband, Pierre Cardin

    that's all that matters,
