Sad day for South-West as shark attack reality sinks in
A sombre mood has settled across the South-West of the state as news of a shark attack at Bunker Bay spread, only a year after a local surfer was killed at nearby Gracetown.
The overcast day was described as having "perfect shark conditions" by Dunsborough police officer-in-charge Sergeant Craig Anderson, who is investigating the death.
Yesterday, a 21-year-old man was mauled by a shark while bodyboarding just 50 metres from the shore at a small surfing break known as 'The Boneyards' at Bunker Bay.
The victim had been living in Wilyabrup, three hours south of Perth, for several years after relocating to WA from Sydney.
Sergeant Anderson said the young man had a girlfriend who had recently returned overseas.
"Out of nowhere it would appear the young fellow has been taken by a shark, nobody actually saw the shark itself, but they retrieved the young man's body in the water amongst some blood," Sergeant Anderson said.
"Talking to a local, this morning you could have described it as perfect shark conditions, you know dark and gloomy water, overcast skies, light rain falling, there was whale action earlier in the morning in the bay, and there were seals about."
Sergeant Anderson praised the surfers who were in the water at the time of the attack.
"You've got to take your hat off to the young fellow who was surfing with him and his mate for bringing [the victim] ashore, the nature of his injuries was significant, it's not something that even volunteer rescuers or emergency services like to see, even my own staff, so it's just something you have to deal with as a police officer and do the job you have to do," he said.
