I never sit at a traffic light in Thailand if I use my brain acknowledging the source of these obstacles to free travel, clear traffic in every direction and always make the left turn on traffic light, same as you do in America on right turns at corner stops. Thai's will wait endlessly at non functioning traffic lights. While at the opposite end of that spectrum they will almost always run a red light when it suits them on the tail end of a yellow.
I like Thailand for the reason there's really no hard and fast rules for almost anything. Even with the few rules you need to comply with, Immigration there's always a loophole somewhere to be found.
Agree Americas caught up in its legalese and is strangling itself into an ultimate police state. You need to gt out soon...Hows the house build going?
    ltnt,
They banned the camera's at traffic lights for offender use. As you noted, loopholes and people were not getting notified and the cities were getting hammered about it. Nowadays they use them for accidents to identify who was at fault if the local BIB can't figure it out.

I like Thailand for the reason you mentioned, no hard and fast rules. If you blend in and go with the flow its really quite an easy life with virtually no stress at all. Where as here you are constantly watching out and looking over your shoulder and wondering if you just broke a new law no one informed you about. No joke, a friend of mine just got a ticket from a city cop for riding his bicycle with no hands. The cop cited him for something like reckless driving. I was cracking up. We ride frequently and I routinely sit up and stretch and ride with no hands. Hell on my Mtn bike I ride all the time with no hands. Crazy!!!

House is going well. Thanks for asking. About 1/2 way done

I got a speeding ticket in Los Gatos, (1993), while riding my bicycle. 42 mph in a 30mph speed zone. $65 fine.

Fast forward to 2014, Minimum ticket has a base fee of $215. then they have some hidden magic scale based on offense that adds more. Plus admin fees for filing etc. Of course you can take half a day off work and go stand in line at the courthouse with all the degenerate losers to fight in hopes of it getting reduced. I am guess his fine will be $350 plus.

    Bull!

No way a bicycle has the mass to bounce a radar signal.

    You been had there amigo.

That and traffic law is pertinent to motor vehicle. Bicycles haven't any motors. Double been had.

    Mr Earl,
I know you are speaking to ltnt moreso, but here in California, bicycle riders are absolutely held accountable to a majority of motor vehicle traffic laws. You can get a ticket for speeding, running a red light, failing to yield and riding on the wrong side of the road. For my friend, the "No hands" was a new one to me, I have not looked into it, He is. This State is clearly the most over governed state of the US. I suspect NY is a close 2nd.

I guarantee it would be virtually impossible to go a day without breaking some law.

As you see Earl, JPPR has offered you the correct information.

For your reference: I was coming down a steep hill, which I always enjoyed peddling like crazy to see just how fast I could go. Unfortunately, as I was flying past the General Store on my right, a van with two ladies backed out into the roadway, without looking, about 50 meters in front of me. I pulled on the hand brakes and began to slip and slide. I hit the blacktop on my back and slid into the van ending up underneath the front bumper. My speedometer stopped at 42 mph.

An accident of this nature requires a cop. An ambulance was called for me. The cop interviewed the ladies and myself on site. He asked me what speed I was going. I didn't think fast enough, and said I don't know, we can look at the speedometer on my bike. 42 MPH was the last reading. I refused the ambulance, and got a lift to the hospital by the cop. X-rays reviled a cracked tailbone. Took a year to heal. Coincidentally, the speed must have been higher as that 42 mph was after the dead stop. I have achieved over 40 mph on this bike going on other than downhill. What was amazing about riding it was the sound of the whizzing air running past your ears. No motor, no real noise, just this whizzing sound.

This was my third incident while riding. I hung up the bike. Eschelon road bike, 17 lbs. alloy frame, very fast. I bought it from a bike shop in Los Gatos in 87 for $785.
I loved biking, but after so many dangerous encounters with automobiles I figured it was time to give up on it. Sadly I might add. I would never consider riding anything on two wheels in Thailand BTW.

Employed a "painter" to finish off some work we've had done to the kitchen.

Somehow, he managed to get more paint on the fucking floor than the walls.. The thought of putting down paper beforehand, or actually cleaning up afterwards simply did not occur to the twit. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot..

Next time you need any work done in a kitchen, employ a woman. They are the only ones who understand what goes on in there, and rightly so.

Mr NR spilt wine all over our laptop keyboard a few weeks back. Since he did it the i, k, most numbers and various punctuation points don't work. Getting fed up with typing and having to use the on screen keyboard at the same time for the ones that don't work. Very frustrating and time consuming!

Maybe you shouldn't be gobbling his knob while he's working...

They keep rotating the staff at the hot-springs national park, when the newbies come I always have get into a big argument about not paying the 100 baht farang/tourist fee. Usually it's just 20 baht, when I turn 60 it will be free!
I have to get out my driving licences and explain that I'm not a freaking tourist; that I live here and come there a lot.

Five months ago I bought a Samdung Galaxy S5 to replace the old Nokia mobile I'd been using for several years. I never had a problem with the Nokia, but figured it was time for an 'upgrade'. While listening to music yesterday the S5 speaker went dead. No gradual crapping out, it just went dead. This concerned me greatly, as it has seen relatively light use and I've always treated it kindly.

I happened to be in Bangkok when this untimely death occurred, so I took it into the Samdung service center at MBK and was informed it will take 3 to 5 days to fix. Great. I do not have a spare phone - the old Nokia was donated to the sister in law a few weeks ago. Now I am cut off from the mobile world, but I keep telling myself that perhaps the disconnection might not be such a bad thing, at least for a few days. The fix is under warranty, so it shouldn't cost me anything other than annoyance, frustration, inconvenience, travel costs to pick it up, etc.

This was the first Samdung product I've purchased and initially I was impressed with the S5 functionality, particularly the camera which is much faster than the one in the Note 3. Now I'm not exactly going to be rushing out to buy other Samdung products.

When I talked with the duty manager at the service center, aside from giving my thoughts about S5 'quality', I also expressed concerns about the support web page being in Thai language only, leaving me no way to look up the location of a service center nearer to the central province where I live. The support phone line is not exactly customer friendly either. When I tried that I found myself in a dead end with choices nowhere near the province I live in, and no option to get back to the main menu.

^Try Samdung on-line...better search for help. I bought one that died in three weeks. Traded it in on a Nokia.

Went to True Visions "Group," yesterday to pay my annual entertainment fee. After receiving my mail billing and two additional telephone calls reminding me that service ends at the end of October.

So innocently, I stagger into the shop, slagging off a Thai lady trying to jump in front of me in the line, sit down and hand the clerk my billing slip. She gets all squirmy and immediately heads for the supervisor/English speaker. Bla,bla, bla, back on the mobile...bla,bla,bla...15 minutes of silence...back to supervisor....bla,bla,bla...supervisor/English Speaker...Sir? Yes. You cannot pay this bill now. Why not? Too soon. What! Too soon. (smile) You sent me the bill, why too soon? Cannot. O.K. so when can I pay the billing? Next month. O.K., What day should I pay? Before the 15th. Are you crazy? Smile, nothing emits from the supervisor...I depart mumbling,... this is insane. The billing clearly states pay before the 1st of Nov., now I cannot pay, or they have a cock up in their system and are covering it up. Which s it?

Ants in my pants, amongst other places

For today's groan, we transition from electronics to the natural world.

Last night I took my shower and dried off using a towel that had been hanging on the bathroom rack. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until a minute or so after I finished drying and had put my undershorts on, when I began to feel irritating sensations all over my body. Upon closer inspection, I found that my skin was crawling with tiny red ants, a kind that bites or stings. I checked the towel and found it to be the source - hundreds were congregating in spots and they appeared to be eating something.

I made a quick dash to another room to grab a fresh towel and then proceeded to rinse the little buggers from my personage. By this time I was beginning to feel a burning sensation in my groin, back and legs. Welts started appearing in many places and they itched like big mosquito bites. I took some allergy medicine in the hopes that the antihistamine would quiet things down enough to be able to sleep, and that seems to have helped. When I awoke this morning the welts and itching sensation were gone.

We get many kinds of ants here, from big red ones all the way down to this very small red variety. I have experienced attacks from both those examples and if I had to suffer one or the other, I would take the big ones any day. While their bites are stronger, they do not cause the allergic reaction for me that the tiny ones do. Some ants will go after anything they can sink their teeth into. We've had them eat clothing and pillows, in addition to the more usual food raiding. I typically take a live and let live approach to life, but I make exceptions for creatures such as these. Mosquitoes, ticks and flies are right up there among the most despised.

Lesson learned - always check the towel closely before drying off.
