    I went in March.

    If you go in person, you can pay cash.

    If you go in person, you do not need your birth certificate and do not need to have your photographs countersigned.

    (I rang them about the "signed photographs" requirement because this was worrying me as I knew no such suitable person. Call them: 02 305 8333)

    It took 9 working days from paying the cash (and getting a till receipt for the old passport in case the BiB want to see it) and it cost 4,830 baht. They also give you a form confirming the date when you can collect the new passport.

    You need the till receipt to collect the new passport: do not lose it!

    It was incredibly easy.
