    Denial of Service Attack?

Question: About a week ago I had an unusual event occur to my computer. For about 24 hours I was apparently "locked out" of my internet access. It had all the characteristics of a Denial Of Service attack...in which my computer ran very slowly, was being constantly kicked off the net, and generally ran very poorly in connecting to the net. It gave all the appearance of a Denial of Service attack...as though I was being targeted with multiple attempts to "busy out" my computer and in that way make it impossible for me to access and stay on the internet. I am in Bangkok and I connect to my family's computer and the internet via a wireless connection from my laptop.
For about 18 hours or so my repeated attempts to get into the internet were usually disconnected after a minute or two. I tried scans with my antivirus, ran some utilities I have installed that will go back to the last "good" system save and reset the system to that state, and went off-line and ran a "rebuild" of my sytem files from the last known good backup.
Everything seemed to be good as long as I was off line...but when I tried to go back on line again, even though I could log in to various sites, I was kicked out within a minute or two from every site I logged on to. At the same time my computer seemed to be running very slowly..taking a very long time to connect to anything on line...but working at the normal speed when i was off line.
I seen computers that were being attacked with a Denial of Service attack before, and what I saw was very similar to the other Denail of Service attcks I have seen on other computers.
I might mention I run a personal firewall (a commercial software product) I have installed on my laptop which I have configured for a lot of protection against viruses and other malware. Usually if I am on the net, and there is some questionable or suspicious activity, the firewall I have installed or my active real time anti-virus software I have installed warns me about that activity. This time, however, I had no warnings...just a slowdown and constantly being booted off the net.
    Anyhow, my questions.
    1. Was this a Denial of Service attack?
    2. Have others experienced such a thing in Bangkok?
    3. After about 18 hours it seemed that whatever it was simply stopped...and everything was back to normal. As a further precaution I rebuilt my files from the last known good backup (about a week old). I found no problems...at least the rebuild from that known good backup couldn't find any problems...that is. I've been running now for about a week...no problems. So I guess my fial question is: What do you make of it, or what do you think it was?
    4. Does anybody have any idea what it might be?
Just for the record I run Windows Vista...and yes I regularly update it, my anti-virus software, and another program to defrag/clean/rebuild my registry. They are usually updated daily.

Did you go through your event logs during this period and see if it reported any unusual events? (warnings or errors).

And does your firewall log say anything?

As DD says, it being Thailand, I'd be tempted to say it was more likely a provider problem, but if it happens again, download Free Extended Task Manager so you can get a better handle on what processes were running on your PC and what was actually hogging CPU, network and disk access.
If, as you say, your Firewall normally reports unauthorised intrusion attempts, then it should have detected unsolicited inbound traffic.

there is an excellent writeup on DOS attacks at grc.com. Steve Gibson explains them in great detail in terms even I can understand.
