I think purchasing managers & accountants have more say over it.

Few permanant staff, contractors come and go as needed. Computers get moved between departments as needed. Almost impossible for any Tech to know exactly what software and upgrades every department or temporary contractor is gonna need. Especially when the company is breaking new ground or implementing new tech for which there might be many solutions but few that fit their spec.

frozen computers in a campus make perfect sense, without good IT staff, I don't see how else they could do it

some here are confusing hardware cost with maintenance budget with skilled IT staff

how much does your average MSCE make these days ? 80k a year ?

    You said it, Butters.

Hey how about diskless workstations? Now there's a ground-breaking idea.

In fact, why use PCs at all? Just have a really big computer that runs everything, and stupid terminals. Or maybe it sounds better if I call them "dumb".

I shall call it a Main Frame.

I think it could catch on.

Most skilled IT staff don't want to work in maintaining computers, its a boring job. The skilled and talented ones go into software development, database & systems administration and system design. Computer maintenance is the lowest rung on the IT ladder.

The skilled and talented workers that somehow do end up in computer maintenance will usually automate their job as much as possible - ie working smarter not harder.

It's probably handy on public library computers as well.
Like we said - library computers, which aren't used for anything worthwhile, but looking stuff up. Basically, any public access machines can benefit from freezing.

Well, now at least we know mc2's technical background -- janitor in the university library.

Actually I am a professor in Computer Science, I have written books on all aspects of IT management and several well received scholarly articles have been published in international academic journals.

....and even if you weren't a bold-faced liar, you still aren't "an IT manager who maintains IT infrastructure worth over two million dollars", making your opinion particularly ill-informed.

I never said I was an IT manager, but I can observe the decisions they make.

Of course I was joking. It was in mainly in response your never ending stream of egotistical, ignorant bs.

I mean, after thinking an iPhone4 antenna hardware design problem could have been solved by a software update, who takes you seriously any more ?

    Well, yes.

I'd have to agree. But those are computers open to the general public, and therefore open to abuse. Still can't see any reason why to freeze computers in the company big picture.

Can only see it as being a hassle to IT staff having to okay every change I want to make to my computer. And considering the company laptop I got recently, that would be almost twice daily for a couple weeks or more.

It was a OTT response to DafftyDucks guess that i was a computer janitor.

However I do have post-grad qualifications in Computer Science, my area of interests are wireless networking, software engineering/design and database mining.

The most interesting aspect of this thread is the revelation how incredibly gullible Butterfly is, after all.

Oh, and mc2 -- library janitor, *not* computer janitor. It's obvious you're not qualified to be a computer janitor, based on your resumé and qualifications.

So, then it applies, as Butters is the #1 Apple fanboi on this forum.

Lovely how you desperately backpedal and try to spin. Oh well, you've outlived your usefulness, as you certainly won't be taking any 2000 Baht from me, and neither will your boyfriend chupacabra, who has flounced once he realized that he was 0wned...

It's over. Go lick your wounds.

^ So, I guess they did.

Chupie having well and good flounced probably means that his grand plans to paint that trolling masterpiece didn't really turn out that well, after all, eh?
