Hi, a request to the mods: Could you merge all of Chupie's various run-on comments in this thread, seeing as how they all seem to be replies to the same post -- would be a shame to litter up the thread with multiple messages that all say the same thing, and have chupie waste the 5 posts a day he is allocated, don't you think? I mean, I'm just trying to help.
As for one of the 'issues' raised by chupie:
Funny - that's NOT an iPhone error message -- too bad doctoring screenshots is not a jailable offense, or is it?
This is an error from Google Voice.Originally Posted by DaffyDuck

You can look up this error in Google regarding Google Voice. It happens when it doesn't find a connection. They were discussing how bad the iPhone's connectivity was (so they posted this screen shot), including the No Sim errors.
You can see this screenshot and the review here:

... in the section dealing with AT&T connectivity, yes:
Finally, regarding the issue of dropped reception due to the external antenna, slashgear seems to agree with most users who don't have an issue:No matter the changes, AT&T’s network continues to frustrate. We’ve suffered multiple dropped calls in every day of iPhone 4 use with the US carrier, and as before there’s little apparent connection between what’s shown in the status bar and what the network is actually capable of sustaining.
Lastly, would you care to explain your apparent multiple personality commenting behavior, as in one thread you do the best you can to tear down a given product, yet in another thread you go about carrying it's torch and lauding it?It’s certainly something we can replicate, though we had to hold the handset in a way we wouldn’t usually do.
Hmmm... I wonder if that has anything to do with your recently acquired humility...?
But I thought you said this was a doctored screenshot?Originally Posted by DaffyDuck

I don't think so.

Apple can't design software right, OSX is a giant disaster as a platform, and it's not the first time they are having major hardware problems with their equipment. Very disappointing. Always wait 1 or 2 years before their products become stable, but of course by then, they will have something new, that will still not work properly, and we are back to square one
it's an endless cycle that could only be maintained with AOL style marketing,
Yep. I remember the first iPhone had some very mad customers that rushed the first day. Remember they had to issue vouchers?Originally Posted by Butterfly
It is a nice device and all, but there shouldn't be these many problems.
Did you hear about the class action lawsuit?
From "Defect in Design, Manufacture and Assembly" to "Deceptive Trade Practices", "Fraud and Concealment" and more. These were both against Apple and AT&T.

when you rush products for marketing reasons and capture sales, this is bound to happen. MS suffered for years of that same problem, they did it again with VISTA and got fucked badly.
I do note an almost desperate avoidance to respond to the above query - I wonder why that is? Maybe because he's 0wned. Not that it matters anymore, as he'll be talking to himself from this point onwards (well, to Butterfly, but there's not much difference, is there..?)
The PROXIMITY SENSOR
The iPhone 4's second Vietnam: the proximity sensor (updated)
The iPhone 4’s second major problem isn’t getting nearly as much attention as the first, but it’s arguably just as bad — because it causes you to drop calls. The only difference is that your face is to blame, not AT&T’s craptastic network.
The proximity sensor in the iPhone 4 is what tells it how close the phone is to your face so that it can turn the touchscreen off while you’re making a phone call. This has the effect of a) saving battery power, and b) preventing inadvertent touches of the screen by your face.
The problem is that the proximity sensor in the iPhone 4 is on a hair trigger. It’s either too sensitive, miscalibrated or both. In over three years of using the iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS I’ve never accidentally hung up on, muted or put a call on speakerphone while holding it up to my face — not once. Yet I’ve done it a half dozen times on my iPhone 4 over the past weekend.
As I first blogged about in my iLemon post, I frequently put calls on speaker, or accidentally “FaceTime them” or completely hang up on calls altogether because the proximity sensor errantly wakes the screen, which some part of my cheek proceeds to touch.
And I’m not the only one. There are 66 pages of proximity sensor complaints in this one thread alone (which already has over 100,000 views) from iPhone 4 users in Apple’s own support forums.
What bothers me is that the prox bug — which seems to be more related to software than hardware — seems like childsplay compared to the antennae/reception issue. Also, it only affects the i4 and so a fix wouldn’t have to be QA’d for Apple’s other iPhone handsets.
Can’t Apple just dial back the sensitivity on the proximity sensor a couple of notches and release a software update? Why is Apple waiting for a “few weeks” and rolling everything into one massive update when it could probably release a proximity fixes for afflicted iPhone 4 users right now? It seems like a comparatively trivial bug and Apple is making its iPhone 4 customers suffer needlessly in the mean time.
Does your iPhone 4 proximity sensor act up?
Update: A PowerPage commenter reports that Apple is making matters worse by apparently deleting threads on its discussions.apple.com forum related to the prox bug. An example of a deleted thread is after the jump…
And this is what's there:
That's the typical Apple response. "Look, you're the sort of brain dead twat that's desperate to own one, so don't come running back to us when it doesn't work properly".iphone4_925 posted “Re: Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls” in “Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls” on Jul 5, 2010 6:16:29 PM.

I took my phone to the Apple store for repair/exchange this evening. The Genius first said that he had not heard of the issue (yeah, right! total lie). I told him there are nearly 70 pages on the Apple Support forum for this exact issue. He immediately dismissed my comment and said, “We typically don’t lend too much credence to support forum posts…” Ok….
Anyhow, the Genius made a call on my phone and, of course, he did not encounter any of the proximity issues I’m having. He gave the phone back to me and said, “There doesn’t appear to be any issues with your phone. You’ll just have to get used to the new Proximity Sensor location on the iPhone 4…” I was like, “Ummm… Huh?” He refused to exchange the phone.
Luckily, I bought my phone from Best Buy on launch day. I immediately went back to Best Buy and the Mobile Phone sales guy said they’ve already had 9 of their 30 launch day iPhones returned due to antenna and proximity sensor issues. He put me on a list to exchange the phone. Luckily, I have 45 days to exchange the phone, since I’m a Best Buy silver rewards card holder…
Anyhow, I’m kinda bummed the Genius refused to help me :-(. He was rather arrogant, too, which really made me mad. Oh well… Back to Best Buy it goes…

At least Apple are showing some signs of vague concern for the customers they've let down - well maybe:
Apple is waiving its traditional 10 percent restocking fee for customers wanting to return iPhone 4 handsets, according to Computerworld, which cites an AppleCare support representative as confirming the new policy.
Calls to Apple’s New York flagship store regarding the restocking fee, however, were redirected to a media help line, which was slow to offer a response.
Yes, I read that and it seemed fair.
It would also seem fair to bundle the iPhone with a FREE bumper. It's just a piece of plastic and they are selling for $30 bucks. My BB came with a free case.
Also, they should face this head on. They've sold, what, 2 million? Surely, they know how many people have complained. They can shut the press saying that only, what, half a percent? Of people experienced problems. This way people won't get the wrong impression.
OR, the numbers are really high, there is a serious flaw in design and this is why they are hiring all these antenna experts.
It is a real shame because if they open the bluetooth (iPhones shouldn't be jailbroken. It should just work) and they didn't have these connection problems, the iPhone would be the best device out hands down.
Where else can you edit an entire movie in HD with transitions in a Phone? That's pretty insane.
Now all the bad press, and Android is taking all the benefits.
Methinks this is the same arrogance that almost drove them to bankruptcy.
I think this is making everything else worse. Every single car or device you can find in Google attached to complaints, regardless of how good it is.
I have a BB bold 9000. Best thing I've ever bought. But I am sure I can find nightmare scenarios online. People that got them and the ball fell out, or something didn't work. Whatever.
So, this problem with the sensor is just one more thing to add to the bad news and it may get blown out of proportion just because of the antenna issue.
There is also a rumor that an "insulating coating" was missing from some iPhones or all iPhones that is supposed to help with this issue.
Apple's silence makes it very confusing. These parts are coming from all over. Design or manufacturing issue?

I don't know if it's Apple's silence. When they start censoring their own forums, that's a lot worse than not admitting the problems themselves.Apple's silence makes it very confusing.

I don't know Plan. I think he was referring to me. But, How many is this one now counting the Mac mini thread today? 8-9-10? I lost count.
They censor their own forums? I thought that was the way they kept in touch with their customers. At least that's how Steve sells it.
What happened to the explanation of me and/or Slashgear doctoring screen shots? Anyone else find that comment odd?
