iPhone customers complain of failing update

Oh dear, they can't get *anything* right at the moment, can they?

And this is BEFORE the press conference!

iPhone customers are struggling to install Apple’s latest software patch and have been grumbling about the problems on Cupertino’s support forums.
iPhone customers lay into Apple after iOS 4.0.1 update fails to install

Heaven knows what we're going to read in the Sunday's when they've digested yesterday's hour-long cop out.

    Especially when they read this:

iPhone 4: Why We’ve Reconsidered Its Rating

Ginny Mies and Melissa J. Perenson, PC World

If you were following this morning's Apple press conference, you may have seen PCWorld's name listed as one of the publications that lauded the iPhone 4 as the number one smartphone available. Unfortunately, after today's news and the number of issues that drove Apple to call this press conference in the first place, PCWorld has decided to take the iPhone 4 off our Top 10 Cell Phones chart and reassign it a "pending" rating.

While offering users a free bumper is a step in the right direction, it does not excuse the faulty hardware. Furthermore, there was no absolute promise on fixing the proximity sensor issues. Jobs said the company will "try" and get it fixed them in the next software update, but did not indicate exactly when that will happen. Nor did he provide an extension of the return period, to accommodate users who might be on the fence because of this issue.

We still stand by our praise of the camera, display, hardware aesthetics and user interface, as stated in the original review. But given all of the issues we've personally had with the phone, we cannot recommend the iPhone 4 to other consumers until these problems are fixed (iPhone 4 Fix: Many Questions Left Unanswered and iPhone 4 Hell: A Personal Tale of iPhone 4 Woes give more detailed accounts of some of the issues we've had with the phone). A bumper feels like a clumsy solution and the proximity sensor issues inexcusable for a smartphone of this caliber.

We will revisit the phone's rating and chart position when we receive the bumper and when the phone's proximity sensor is fixed

    Uh...huh....

I'm not questioning the author's authority or expertise ... I'm questioning yours.

Do let us know when you graduate, so we can send you cake and flowers.

...unless, that is, you decide to spend more time in academia.

Thanks, seriously, this was the funniest thing so far, out of all you threads.

Either way, you've pretty much lost any and all credibility and legitimacy (not that you had much to begin with).

    Stages of dealing with grief:

    1. Denial
    2. Anger
    3. Bargaining
    4. Depression
    5. Acceptance

Daffy seems to be stuck in the first 2 stages, poor guy.
Nevertheless, watching him deal with his grief is quite amusing.

    A normal stage 1 response.
Everyone is watching you daffy as you go through these tough times. We know it must be painful for you and all iPhone4 fanboys around the world. Keep trying. You can do it.

I had the exact same problem with mine and my wife's Iphones. She too was fed up with the reception, dropped calls etc etc. She wouldn't stop nagging!!

So after a week of the badgering I took them BOTH back to Apple. Now the guy at the genius bar was VERY apologetic but he said there was nothing he could do about the iPhone but he did offer to upgrade the wife.

WELL, I jumped on that and I can tell you today the reception issues are the same but the wife......

As you can see she has been properly trained how to hold the iPhone 4 by Apple

    ROTFLOL!

I think you hit upon the truly magical marketing for Apple -- if that was their way to deal any dissatisfaction issues, they would have the highest customer satisfaction rate in the industry.

    Oh wait, they already do.

Interesting results from a CNET Poll:

Are you satisfied with Apple giving away free bumpers to solve the iPhone 4's antenna woes?
    • Yes, I'll happily take my free bumper 37%
    • No, and I'm considering returning my phone 28%
    • No, but I'll keep my phone anyway 13%
    • I never had a problem in the first place 23%

    * No, but I'll keep my phone anyway 14%
    * I never had a problem in the first place 20%

    Hmmm Mobile Gazette aren't convinced:

Our opinion is this: Apple are still in denial about the faults. Thousands of customers are unhappy, although it is fair to say that many more customers are probably very happy with their purchase. Apple still deny that the antenna design is flawed, but their offer of free bumpers is surely a tacit admission that there's a problem. Although it may well be true that only a small number of people have a significant problem, Apple's technical explanation seems like flimflam. Many customers will not be happy with the bumper solution, although we expect that it will please the majority of them. However, we could still see this one in court at some time in the future.
Honestly, almost every person on the planet knows what the problem is (except Daffy).

    How hard is it?

Even they say: "Apple really need to cut the crap and fix the iPhone 4 before they do lasting damage to themselves and their brand."

only a few hundred thousands not happy, while millions are happy, who cares

marketing victims probably don't use it as a phone anyhow, more like a symbol status

Yep, there's a high rate of customer satisfaction if ever I saw one.

    Oh, hey, in other news:

Google halting Nexus One sales through official store after current inventory depleted -- Engadget

Google shuttering the Nexus One? Say it ain't so!

(The reason this is bad news, is that it is one of only totally unlocked Android phones available. Good luck finding many other not carrier locked Android phones).

I think Andy Ihnatko summarized it best:

iPhone 4 Press Conference – The Post-Game Wrapup – Andy Ihnatko's Celestial Waste of Bandwidth (BETA)

Steve Jobs didn’t fall to his knees, rend his garment, clasp his hands together, and beg for forgiveness from users and stockholders.

    This has upset many people.

    These people are idiots.

The reason why people don't take fanboys seriously is because they think with their emotions not reason, and therefore can't be relied on to give objective advice.

I'd much rather read an article from an analyst that isn't too invested in any particular technology or brand, and draw conclusions for myself rather than having a fanboy ram something down my throat.

The people who lap up fanboy shit can be described in one word: suckers.
