PC down : keeps restarting ...

    Hi every one,

My main PC looks KO : it starts properly, untill the desktop appears. Then, before you can have time to do anything, it restarts ! Very annoying, and no way to get into control of the beast. It began just while browsing the web, there's been no software/hardware modifiations, funky setting changes or anything.

I'd like to find a solution without having to format the disk, where my latest work is

    any ideas appreciated

    Cheers
    ST

CPU could be overheating. Check the CPU fan works and the cooling fins on the heatsink are clean.

turn it on, half way thru boot up restart it and choose safe mode, most likely cpu is over heating caused by something starting during boot up.

Nope, yer fucked... One of my PC's did the same thing a couple months ago and I was never able to resolve the problem... Turned out a virus got onto the HD and I couldn't get it off... Even had the IT virus weenies try to eradicate the gremlins to no avail... I would up taking the hard drive out of it and set it up as a secondary on another machine just to get my files & data off of it before reformatting it and reinstalling...

Remove memory cards, clean contact points with an eraser. Vacuum out dust from mainboard. Re-insert memory. Start in Safe mode.

it's not hardware related, it's a virus, quite famous actually for that kind of behavior, can't remember the name

    you are fucked,

boot on some linux, do a ntfs-3g mount and run a scan

Depends on how computer savvy you are, but I would.........
1)Take it down the local IT mall.
2)Give Somchai 500 baht and let him have the headache!
Hope you can save what you got.

This problem is almost certainly hardware related.

Open the thing up and check that the cpu fan is not blocked with crud

remove memory ram and then push it back in firmly.

If you are using a graphics card in either pcu or agp slot remove it and and then re-boot using the on board graphics post if there is one.

I've seen this kind of thing many times, its normally one of these three things that is the culprit.

Had a similar problem with my laptop the other day.

    Booted in safe mode.
    Disabled display adapters
    rebooted
    reinstalled display adapter drivers
    bingo. Everything working fine again.

Having said that, it could be a multitude of things. So if your time is at a premium, then pay someone to sort it for you.

The last three boxes with this problem I've fixed so far this year, none beeped.

Not saying it doesn't happen, but with sudden shutdown, theres not always time.

    ROTFLOL!

Because he won't, so why bother.

PC people love their misery, and obviously their work isn't that serious to them, as they claim.

But that's where the entertainment lies...

get the ubuntu 32bit x86 ISO and burn it to a disc

select boot from CD in your BIOS ( ask if you do not know )

select use as live CD from the menu

this will give you access to your HD and be able to connect USB drives if you want to back things up and also indicate to you if it is a hardware problem or a windows virus problem

booting from a CD is also the best way to do thorough virus scans
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

    Last update :

    - spent 2 hours cleaning fans, fins, and whats not inside the box. Should have cleaned there along with the rest of the house after the capenter came in last week, and clouded the whole place in dust.
    - done the eraser trick on the RAM and video card
    - rebooted system after lunch, with great hopes, but ... not good enough

    - have now uninstalled display drivers, and trying to reinstall, but something wrong ,start download again...

    - I wont do anything esoteric involving unbuntu, linux, or other black magic tricks, aint no superstitious enough

its a lost day anyways, but I'll waste my time going to Pantip only as a last resort... but it's one of the days when I'm considering Macs with a new eye...

At least I can restart in safe mode, and will back up the latest works if cant do anything else.

^^ Do you have the system install CD? If you do then boot from it and try the system repair option.

/then give it to somebody you hate and buy a Mac.
