    McAfee antivirus

On April 21, 2010, beginning approximately at 2 PM GMT, millions of computers worldwide running Windows XP Service Pack 3 were affected by an erroneous virus definition file update by McAfee, resulting in the removal of a Windows system file (svchost.exe) on those machines, causing machines to lose network access and, in some cases, enter a reboot loop.[9

    What can be done ?]

Writing in the company’s blog, Barry McPherson, executive vice-president of support and customer service, wrote “"I want to apologize on behalf of McAfee and say that we're extremely sorry for any impact the faulty signature update file may have caused you and your organizations."

The file the McPherson referred to was part of the standard update procedures that virus companies use to update the protection on computers that are running their software. In this instance, however, a McAfee update crippled some Windows PCs by quarantining or deleting a file crucial to Windows operation, called “svchost.dll”.

McAfee has made a fix available on its website:

    Hope it helps.

Phew. Lucky my home pc is running Windows 7 or else I would have to do Tech Support for my wife over the phone, which doesn't bear thinking about as she is absolutely useless with computers.

McAfee have been shit for years, and even when their crap products run properly, they slow the PC down considerably because all they've ever done is bolt on extra rubbish so they can have an "Internet Security" product.

You're better off with Microsoft Security Essentials and keeping your Windows Updates, er, up-to-date.

And if you aren't a M$ fan look at AVG or Avira, or buy something like Kaspersky.

Your inability to operate a standard mouse is possibly due to your having 3 fingers and a thumb firmly wedged wrist deep in your arse or it could just be that you really are retarded - de gustibus non est disputandum...

    I wouldn't install macaffee/Norton in my toilet!

Try Avira or AVG, or Avast if you use 64bit, why pay for system hogging rubbish, that has now been proven to be a disaster! When you can get better protection FREE!
