It ran at about the exact performance I know "enjoy" on my laptop .. 2.4 dual core, 2 gigs ram DDR2, 128mb card.

I bought the ASUS (Nvidia GT 9400 - 512Mb RAM) and to be truthful, I have seen virtually no improvment in graphics, it cost 1400 Baht) The only benefit I find is that my monitor now runs on the DVI port instead of the usual VGA Port...maybe it is freeing up some RAM ...who knows?

Anyone here using Win 7? Doesn't it just eat up more resources hence the need for more RAM/faster processor etc.... I would sort of like an i5 and run MSDOS, if you know what I mean, I don't need an all dancing OS, I just want something that allows me to maximise the CPU and RAM without having some huge overhead running the background OS.

easily the best CPU for performance/price

couple it with the gigabyte mobo mentioned , 4 to 8 gig ram , win7 pro 64bit , GTS250 vid card and a fast HD ( SSD? ) for the OS/apps ( do all your storage on a USB3 external or gig LAN to NAS ) and you will have a very fast machine that will keep you happy for 2-4+ years.

Interesting, now I have to go and learn what SSD is, USB3???? FFS (I have just got USB2!!) and bugger me whatever "gig LAN" (or is this the new gig rather than 100MBS LAN?) but I need to have a look at NAS????

This shit gets frightening! The deeper you dig.....the more of a mess you make! In fact the more I read, the more I fancy a Commodore 64! no headaches, no graphics ..nothing to worry about, or even an Atari tennis game for the TV!

No. It uses a lot less than XP. The memory management is light years ahead of XP.

SSD's don't have any moving parts like the spinny ones. In theory they should be less prone to data loss/failure etc and will perform better than a normal drive.

They did say that CDs were virtually indestructible when they were bought out as well, only time will tell

So if I am on the right track, is SSD a bit like a Memory stick?

Just download it off the internet. There are 2 utilities which authenticate it. Someone posted this a couple of weeks ago and it explains all you need to know.

I'm running it on a ASUS eee PC1000 with 2Gb RAM and a 64Gb Runcore SSD. It runs faster than Win XP did on the original 1Gb, HDD configuration.

It's not a gaming platform, but for browsing, emails, watching movies, etc. it is absolutely perfect.

As far as SSDs are concerned, like any storage media you should have more than one copy. They are supposed to have the same or better MTBF (mean time between failure) of a hard disk. Considering I just bought a brand new 2Tb Western Digital SATA drive and it lasted precisely ONE WEEK before collapsing in a heap, I'm not sure if that's actually a good thing

Fortunately I had it in a protected array, so I didn't lose anything.

If you have a large volume of data and you want some measure of protection, have a look at the Drobo range.

Well computer tech doesn't stand still. the P55 mobo driver has been replaced by H55 & H57. For my purposes the H57 would be the way to go.

I am a long time Asus user & very satisfied but if buying today I might go for

a P55 mobo roundup for those who are looking at a new i5 or i7 based machine

P55 Motherboard Round-up: Asus, EVGA, GB, Intel, MSI - HotHardware

but reading through - only one mobo has USB3.0 and SATA 6Gbps , which I think should be a must have for building a system now.

I think I will be putting an i5 build off for a couple of months
