Now that is a bit more like it! Cheers! (Would you expect to see a significant improvement from the current set up?)

so I can use an I7 processor, and up to 16GB of RAM...pardon the ignorance, but if I was to go for this set up, I know I need new RAM and processor, would I need to change from Win XP PRO to the 64 bit or Vista or Win7?

Will most of current pirated software, photoshop, premiere, power DVD etc support this? or do I need to go out and spend another 100 baht on upgraded pirate software?

1156 pin means you are limited to Intel i7 - 800 series - which is quite OK.

Win7 64 bit would be the best for you.

May have to buy a few 100 baht cd's to get the correct add ons.

it does take i5 processors also - the quad core i5 is probably better bang for your buck

Cheers again! Thanks for the info (do you think that the 2.6GHz. processor is fast enough as FSX are reccomending 3GHz!!!!!)

What ammount and type of RAM would you suggest? - This looks just what I amfter and seems affordable too, as I should be able to trade some of my bits in too.

    Thanks again for your help!

Install as much RAM as the board will accept. Assuming you will run Win7-64. ergo 16 gig.

Geil are very good. There are other premium brands out there.

    Lifetime warranty is a must.

That board has 4 ram slots, good luck finding 4gb sticks.

8gb is a more realistic target me thinks.

    basically
    1 core [at] 3GHz .... the i5-750 is 4 cores at 2.66GHz each

don't forget a new power supply and maybe a GTS250 video card

The setup looks great, but what I am trying to get my head around is this 4 core business.

From what I make of it, the 4 core seems to run like 4 processors at 2.66GHz??? correct me please if I am wrong here...it's all new to me, like a co processor sort of thing.

The thing that concerns me is that FSX is only a single threading application, it cannot use multiple processors.

If that were to be the case would a single core running at 3GHz not be faster than 4 x 2.66GHz, when the game can only access one core (processor) again correct me if I am wrong but I don't want to end up buying something I don't need.

I was looking at it when Taskmanager and FSX were running together and FSX doesn't even seem to utilise all the available RAM, yet the processor is like a HOOVER and flat out at 100%....dazed and confused!

I also think I don't need to up the system to Windows 7 or even Vista, which is a great relief, and I can stick with XP Pro 32 BIT.

I am simply trying to find what all this extra tech is going to get me.

It's a good learning exercise I must admit and I appreciate all of your help and input...despite my sometimes "RATTY" replies...it is frustration...like when the wife says (in bed) "NOT ENOUGH" ... and I reply, "Well it was plenty for me darling...snore.."

Also, what difference would you expect to see using the various versions of DDR 3? i.e 1300 as opposed to 2200? Does any of this make much difference (other than the price?)

And sorry - more questions..what effect does allocating some of your installed RAM have on the graphics card?

For instance, I have 2Gb of Ram, and the Graphics card has 512Mb, I can select from the BIOS minimum of 32MB SHARED to a maximum of 256MB...will this make a difference? It doesn't seem to...the processor still whirs like a helicopter in any of these settings, but what do you suggest is best?

I have seen them, but they are only something I dream about...not in my price range at the minute, unless the baht drops back to about 90 to the pound!

But again thanks for the info!

It's not just for a game, it is to get the thing in a state that it can run almost anything.

I made a mistake last time I upgraded, I bought that shit motherboard! (The basic PC has been with me since I had it in China 10 years ago...I still have the Pioneer DVD Writer (2x ..impressive eh?) that cost me the best part of 150 quid!!!!) I just want to modernize it a bit. (I am still considering swapping my kids MB / processor and RAM, but I would feel a bit guilty ...but his puts mine to shame)

All I want is something that can run games, run photoshop Adobe Premier and not to be needing to upgrade again in the next 3-5 years, that's all.

If it means spending 20-25K to do that rather than penny pinching and spending 12K, I would rather fork out the 25K and then forget about it.

Like I say, I fucked up buying that shit Intel board, but I didn't know any better at the time...hence the questions!

if you inspect the mobo you will see it takes dual vid cards , so an extra one can be dropped in down the track - build a whole new machine+win7ultimate and use the old as a file machine/linux learning tool.

do not expect to use your old hard drives as the OS drive , you want a drive that can use the sata properly

    intel advertising blurb
Microsoft Flight Simulator X SOARS to New Heights with Multi-Threading - Intel® Software Network

have a read of some of these - FSX seems to take full advantage of multi cores since SP1

    Google

    Cheers again Baldrick!

The change of OS scares me...it seems like everytime they change the OS it eats so much more resources!

I will check out that about multicore and FSX as if this is the case, then it makes sense to go the whole hog!

What do you think about LGA 1366 Motherboards? How can they accept the same processors as 1156, any advantages? They seem geared for i5 and i7...

i7 is a bit pricey at the minute, so maybe I will look for that i 5 .

Jesus, you know you have given me a hell of a headache with this! But it is great to try and understand the way things are moving.

I haven't looked at PC's for almost 3 years, except when I bought my kid a one and then I took the shops advice!

The 1366 pin is for high end processors. Not compatible with the new 1156 pin mounting. The touted advantage of Intel P55 mobo driver is that it uses video & ram more efficiently.

That's the marketing anyway. For you 1156 is fine.

The i5-750 is where you want to be.

I've tried a whole lot of CPU/RAM/Video Card combinations for gaming. What I've learned is the video card is either the weakest or strongest link. No matter what your combination of CPU/RAM is it will all be throttled by the rating of the Video Card. I had a processor rated at 3 gigs (single core) with 1.5 gig DDR1 RAM and a 256mb card. It ran at about the exact performance I know "enjoy" on my laptop .. 2.4 dual core, 2 gigs ram DDR2, 128mb card.

easily the best CPU for performance/price

couple it with the gigabyte mobo mentioned , 4 to 8 gig ram , win7 pro 64bit , GTS250 vid card and a fast HD ( SSD? ) for the OS/apps ( do all your storage on a USB3 external or gig LAN to NAS ) and you will have a very fast machine that will keep you happy for 2-4+ years.
