While the G4 powerbooks and G4 Ibooks were quality units the MacBook falls pitifully short of the reputation of the earlier units.

I wont ever buy another Mac computer as a result.

My future computer will better quality hardware like a Lenovo

I've got a white macbook and it does feel a bit fragile but my new alu unibody one is completely different. Much tougher.

Apple Mail easily handles that - comes with every MacBook / MacBook Pro.

Hardware wise, the new MacBook Pro will provide you with around 7 hours of battery life (actual and continuous) - and the hardware will remain usable for far longer than any PC system.

I would suggest and recommend it, but then again, that's all I work with.

I think this is an issue of reference -- are you talking about the time to wake from sleep (i.e. you open it up - which is the wake up time), or the time from 'power off' to login screen (which is the boot time).

Mine takes about 15-20 seconds for a boot. 2-3 seconds for a wake-from-sleep.

Yes, i'm based in HK. Actually I went to Fortress to check for the new models. A very good chain. When I bought my laptop 2 years ago, after a few days I noticed some problems, I took the computer back to the shop and they immediately changed it for a new one, no question asked. Same, Sony aftersales service is very good, very efficient. Unfortunately they don't sell Sony anymore but they introduced the Mac, price is competitive and it seems to have all the function I need, so why not ?

Actually, my first laptop when I arrived in Asia 16 years ago was a Mac, I should still have it somewhere, last time I started it, 1 or 2 years ago, it was still working

From power off to login screen, it really is fast. Only after I haven't restarted for a few weeks/months do I get a delay, while the caches are deleted. Even then I'd say it's 10 to 15 seconds.

I usually restart my mac once a month on average. Never crashes, never hangs. Wonderful machine.

This MacBook Pro has also been around the world a few times...no damage at all.

Yeah, agree that the lower end machines aren't quite up to scratch now. The MacBook Pro, Mac Pro and iMac still seem like quality units though.

I'm gonna try installing OSx on the Acer laptop I've been tinkering with.
I need to buy a 8G memory stick. Prices are down to 620 baht at Carrefurr.
They had a 1T Acer external drive for 3500 baht! Amazing! I bought a 250G drive a little over a year ago for 4000 baht.

My G4 iBook chugs along fine, thing is with most people is they get caught up in the spec war so they feel they've got to have the fastest processor with the most RAM squeezed in then end up surfing and sending the odd email every month.

I'll probably keep my G4 and buy an iMac rather than buy another lappie. If it ain't broke......

What seem to be definitive advantage is the battery life for a laptop that doesn't sacrifice the CD writer and the display size and of course the starting time. No need to fight if it's 15 or 50 s, my computer, even in sleeping mode, takes already a few minutes to start.

I'm almost convinced, the two last points are the hardware reliability and the email software.
I never heard of Apple Mail. On a good day I can easily download 100 to 200 messages, around 100MB of attachment, and around half of that will be filed. As I have said, I have 11 active accounts, some of them weight more than 1GB. Is Apple mail able to handle so much ?

Regarding the hardware reliability, among the people owning a Mac for more than a year, any comments ? In Thailand, is the maintenance handled by the vendor or Apple itself. I had very bad experience with small brand that subcontract their maintenance that's why until now I stick with Sony.

Had the MacBook Pro for more than 2 years, the iMac and MacBook Air for more than a year, never had cause to require any form of maintenance. Before moving to Mac's, for personal use I had a HP Compaq, and through work have used Lenovo's, Dell's etc, and the good lady uses an Acer notebook. None of them come remotely close to the build quality of the Mac's.

Actually, also have the Apple Time Machine, a couple of iPhones, and a suite of iPods also. All good quality kit, you should get out and about more.

Today I went again to the computer mall. I check again several laptop Sony, HP, Lenovo and Apple. So far only the Macbook offers a large display AND a battery life over 5 hours, which are my main requirements, all others specs being equal.

My main problem is now migrating from TheBat to Apple mail. After little search on the internet I found this answer, but haven't a MacBook I can't check if it will work or not. Any opinion about that ?

... Secondly with The Bat! you can export into unix mailbox format. If i am not mistaken - I haven't got apple maschine - the Mac mail can import from unix mailbox format...

they are extremely unreliable, and will probably died within 1 year, no matter how good the specs are.

They are simply poorly built, and overpriced.

Poorly built, I can't judge yet, but they aren't overpriced anymore, actually quite the opposite compared to "windows" laptop with similar specs, reason why I'm thinking of buying one today.
Furthermore with windows laptop, it's either a long battery life or a big display, with the MacBook I can have both !

then you must be confused with the specs or not looking at the right laptops. Sony are overpriced and as unreliable as the Macs actually (SONY used to build Mac laptops, not sure if it's still the case today).

As for the battery life, I wouldn't believe the Apple hype between what they advertise and the reality. They also catch fire, so you might want to take that into account. When you say big screen, do you mean 17'' ? most small screen on a PC laptop are 14'', which might be enough for most users.

Not that old chestnut again...yeah, some batteries supplied by PC manufacturers were faulty. Not now though.
